Frickin car repair!
Mechanic's waiting room. Two other customers waiting, females. Both hunched over their phones. I peruse the magazines on a coffee table. Mostly fluff, but there is a recent issue of the Economist with an article ridiculing trump. Knowing this selection might impress the two ladies, I grab it.
This immediately transports me back to my first day in nursery school, age four, when I entered a bright, tangerine-colored room with toys, kid-sized furniture, and a cute girl coloring flowers. She was dark-haired, blue knee-length dress, shoes with buckles, and five years of age. An older temptress.
At that point, I had more experience with breast feeding than flirting, so I took an oblique path. Within her field of vision was a shelf of books. I casually approached it the way a Duke in a velvet smoking jacket might confront his private library. Aloof, I critically scanned the offerings: Something with animals wearing clothes, a novelette about trains, a hard cover edition involving a monkey and a guy with a yellow hat. Etcetera. Etcetera. Etcetera. I considered a few, rejected most. Finally, settled on one with a picture of a bird on the tooth of a steam shovel. I turned toward the girl. If I had a gentleman's pipe, I would have paused to take a slow, confident puff. But I did not, so I opened the book, and pretended that I could read.
She never looked up from her crayons.
Anyway, I may become distant over the next weeks. We represent two sisters whose father was working at a homeless shelter when he was stabbed to death by a homeless man. The trial for the orphans' death benefits begins in two weeks.
