|32| Little Bit Of Truth

I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I roll over to look at the clock and it was only 7 in the morning. I grab my phone off the charger and see Steve's name on the screen.

'Hey baby' I say kind groggy.

'Hey, Hey sorry. Were you a sleep?'

'Yeah, it's okay. What's up?'

'Can you come over? I have some news aaaand also-'  I hear another voice in the background. 'Is that Brook? Tell her to come over!'

'I take it that's your mom?'

'You would be correct.'

'Yeah, give me a little bit and I'll be there.'

'Thank you. I'll see you in a bit.'

I hang up and groan as I get out of bed. I decide not to put on too much makeup because I'll probably end up going back to sleep soon. I run a brush through my hair real quick and put on a pair of blue jean joggers and a white crop top. I go out into the kitchen and try to find my keys. I see a note on the dining room table next to Everest's keys.

Sweeeet. I grab the jeep keys and my purse and head over to Steve's. It only takes me about 10 minutes to get there and I pull into his driveway and park next to his truck. I sit there for a minute, trying to brief myself for what I'm about to walk into. I've only met his mother once, and it wasn't exactly...the right way to meet your boyfriends mother? I get out of the jeep and walk up to the front door. I consider knocking but I end up just walking inside.

"Hey." Steve says looking up at me from the couch with a slight smile on his face.

"Hi."

"Brook! Oh I am so glad you decided to come over." Dorris says coming out of the kitchen with two cups of coffee in her hand. I just smile at her. "You want a cup? I just made a fresh pot?"

"Yeah, sure. That would be great." She smiles back at me and she hands a cup to Steve and walks back into the kitchen. "She seems to be in a good mood." I say as I walk over to the spot on the couch next to Steve. I give him a quick kiss and sit down.

"She's always in a good mood somehow."

"How are you. You two talk yet?"

"If you were to ask her, yes. If you ask me, she just talked in circles. Didn't give me any real answers. Keeps saying at one point or another, she may or may not have run into Wo Fat."

"And I take it you don't believe that?"

"Of course not? Why would Wo Fat keep coming after me and telling me he wants me to bring her to him, if they just had a casual run in? That just doesn't make any sense."

"You think she'll actually tell you what's going on?"

"I have my ways."

"I'm sure you do." I smile at him and rest my hand on his knee.

"Here you go sweetheart." Dorris says coming back into the living room and handing me a mug.

"Thank you." I take a sip and she sits down on the chair across from us.

"So what are your plans for today? Cause I was thinking we could catch up, you know? Get to know each other."

"Uhh mom. I don't-"

"Steve, I didn't ask you." I just sit back and drink my coffee and listen to these two bicker.

"In all fairness mom, you came here to talk. So we could talk."

"Steven, we did talk."

"No mom. I tried to talk, you told me nothing. I need to know why Wo Fat wants to meet with you so bad. Because he's gonna keep coming after me."

"You know how to handle him son. Plus, I'm sure it's nothing."

"MOM! He continues to come after me and my team, time and time again. You're really just gonna sit back and tell me I know how to handle him? I have other things to deal with. LIKE MY JOB!"

"Steve. What would you like me to do huh? Put my life in danger and meet up with him?"

"Put your life in danger? Why would your life be in danger if you're just telling me that you two might of had a run in, in the past? Huh?"

"Look, can't we do this another time? I mean we've got this lovely woman sitting here listening to you try and fight with me."

"I'm, I'm okay. Not to be rude, but this is kind of interesting. Seeing where Steve gets all of his characters. Plus, I'm uhh, I'm an ex cop. Figured this could be kind a test run to see if I'll end up going back on the force."

"What?" Steve looks shocked as he looks over at me.

"This isn't an official yes. This is me doing a test run." Steve just lifts an eyebrow and goes right back to bickering with his mom.

"See? It's fine. Now, tell me. Why does Wo Fat want to meet with you so much?"

"Okay, look. Yes, Wo Fat and I knew each other a long time ago. Well...I knew his father."

"So is this about his father? Cause last I heard, his father is dead."

"Yeah..."

"Yeah...?" He says mimicking Dorris. "What are you not telling me? Is his father still alive?" Dorris just stays quiet. "MOM!"

"Yes, Steven! yes."

"So, you think Wo Fat knows his father is still alive?" I chime in.

"Yes. That's what I'm starting to think." Dorris says. "Steve, if he knows his father is still alive, he's gonna know I was connected. He's also going to know it was me that was at fault for the death of his mother."

"Okay, let me get this straight." Steve says standing up and starts to pace back and forth in the living room. "You, you killed his mother, and then what? You helped his father go in hiding?"

"Yes." She says quietly. "Let's just say that his mother was a suspect in a case I was working on, things got out of hand, she ended up dead."

"Okay, well that doesn't explain why you helped Yao Fat go into hiding."

"Because his wife was in with some bad people. Once they found out that she was dead, he would be their next target. So I decided to help him fake his own death, and put him in hiding."

"Do you know where he is?" I ask.

"I do...but I don't. I know a general location, but he moves around."

"Okay, look. I don't want to know where he is. I don't want that on me. I just want to figure out what to do next."

"I meet with Wo Fat." Dorris says.

"What?" Both Steve and I say.

"I'll wear a wire. That way you and your team can be outside and ready to come in."

"No."

"Yes, Steve. It's the only way."

"It's to dangerous."

"I can handle myself Steve. I have for years." Steve just lets out a sigh and sits back down on the couch.

"Fine, just, just give me and the team some time to figure out how to set this up. Okay? In the meantime, lay low. And yes, that means staying here. No going out shopping. Nothing. I don't want him knowing your here."

"Fine. You're such a bummer."

"Yeah, I know." Dorris gets up and walks to the kitchen.

"You wanna help?" Steve asks me.

"Anything you need."

"I need you to stay here and watch her. I know it doesn't sound fun-"

"Hey." I say interrupting him. "Of course I will." He smiles and me and kisses me.

"I will get someone from HPD to sit on the place just in case Wo Fat already got word. I will be back soon."

"Okay,"

"Keep her out of trouble. It's gonna be difficult cause that's what she's known for."

"I got this. I promise. I will call you if anything comes up."

"Thank you." As he leaves I hear him start to talk to Danny.

"He left so soon?" Dorris says as she comes back out of the kitchen.

"Had to meet with the team."

"Well good. Now we can have our girl time." She smiles at me. Oh goody...
