The Oceans Call
A couple of months have gone by since everything went down. I went through the basic stages of dealing with that kind of stuff. I was angry, I was sad, I even pretended it didn't happen...well I tried. But knowing that Steve and his team and even my whole family is by my side, makes me feel so much better. I finally sat Everest down and told him why all of that happend. I figured that it would be easier for him knowing why it happened. I was fully expecting him to be angry about me not telling him, and even not telling him until a while after it happened, but instead he just hugged me. No anger at all.
I considered going back to school, but decided against it. It's just not something I want to do again. Everest and I have had our fair share of conversations about me going back on the force, and I'm not gonna lie I'm starting to seriously think about doing it. I mean it did make me happy doing it.
Steve has been pretty busy with cases that keep popping up, and some other case that has to do with his mom, but I haven't asked to many questions about it. I'm sure if he wants to talk about it, he will.
I check my watch and notice the time. Crap. I'm gonna be late for lunch. I jump up off the couch and go into my room and slide my flip flops on. Everest took my car today so I grab his keys off the table by the front door and walk out to his mustang. I love this thing. I get in and put the top down. I grab the hat he had sitting on the passenger side seat and put it on so my hair stays out of my face. I may or may not have sped all the way to Kamekona's and notice everyone was still there. As I turn the car off I notice Rylin pull up next to me. At least I beat her. Rylin and I have been hanging out a lot these past few months. It's good to have friends outside of Steve's team.
"Everest let you take his car?!" She asks as she gets out of her car.
"I know." I say with a little laugh. "It's rare, but he needed my car cause he had to drive some people around today."
"Lucky. I love his car."
"Are you sure it's just his car?" I say, hinting at the fact she's had a crush on my brother for like...ever.
"Shut up." She says laughing. We walk across the street and join Steve and his team at the table.
"Hey, babe." Steve says scooting over so I can sit next to him.
"Hey." Rylin jokingly says. He just gives her a confused look and both of us laugh. "Oh, right. You were talking to Brooklyn. Rylin sits next to me, leaving Danny, Chin and Kono on the other side of the table.
"Where's Grover at?" I ask Steve.
"Why would Grover be here?" Danny asks.
"Oh please, I know you guys are all becoming all buddy buddy together."
"No. No way. Grover?" Steve asks.
"Okay okay, whatever."
"Hey guys, sorry I'm late." I hear someone say from behind us. I turn around and see Grover. I just look at Steve and glare at him. I smirks at me as Grover sits next to Danny.
"What are you doing tonight?" I ask Steve as everyone else starts to talk amongst themselves.
"I'm actually picking my mom up from the airport." He doesn't look at me, he just takes a drink of his beer.
"What?" I notice Danny look over at Steve but I just continue to look at Steve.
"Uhh yeah. She called me last night and said she's coming home, and that we needed to talk..."
"About?"
"I'll tell you later?" He says as he looks over at me.
"Yeah." I half grin at him and look at Danny. He still has a shocked look on his face. I'm guessing he didn't know either. I feel Steve put his hand on my leg but I just look over at Rylin.
"So I see Everest let you take his car today." Chin says, trying to change the subject.
"Haha yeah. He had to take my car today to drive some clients around. I'm not complaining though. I love driving that thing."
"Careful, don't say that to loud. Steve will hear it and he's never gonna let you drive again. He'll always be the one driving." Danny says.
"Oh whatever. I let you drive your car and you know it."
"LET me? You let me drive my own car?"
"Yes."
"When? When do I drive my own car?"
"Hear we go again." Kono says laughing.
"You drive your car all the time!"
"Yeah, maybe when your not with me."
"You've driven your car when I'm with you."
"Once, and that was because YOU HAD A BULLET IN YOUR LEG!"
"See? There you go. You drove your car when I was with you."
"You're the worst."
"I know." I just laugh and shake my head.
"Is it always like this?" Rylin asks.
"Yes." Everyone says.
"Haha okay then."
Kamekona brings everyone's food over and we all talk about random things and finish off our food.
Everyone starts to leave and Rylin, Steve and I walk over to our cars.
"I'll meet you at your house?" Rylin asks me as she notices Steve just standing by my car.
"Yeah. I'll be there soon. Everest should be home now so the front door is probably unlocked."
"Perfect. See you in a bit." She just smiles at me and gets in her car and leaves.
"So, your mom?" I ask Steve as I walk over to the other side of my car where he was standing.
"Yeah..."
"Why is she just now saying you need to talk?"
"Because while she's been gone, I figured out why she keeps leaving and that she is the reason that this little war with Wo Fat has started."
"How so?"
"It's kind of hard to explain, and I'm not even sure I know most of it. I just know that she has a code name and Wo Fat kept telling me I needed to find this person. We finally put the pieces together and figured out it was her. I just don't know why. So I have been trying to get ahold of her for the past few weeks. I have had every contact I know also trying to reach her. She finally called me back last night and said she's coming in town for a couple days and that we needed to talk about some stuff."
"Like why Wo Fat is trying to find her?"
"I hope so."
"Well, I mean you know if you need any help or anything you can ask me."
"I know." He says with a small smile. "I also know that you don't like being involved in this kind of stuff."
"I've actually been thinking about that..."
"About being involved in police work?"
"Yeah."
"Really?" He immediately perks up.
"I'm not positive about it yet, but I am thinking about it."
"Join five-0."
"Steve-"
"I'm serious, Brook." He steps in front of me and grabs my hands. "Join five-0. We could use someone like you on the team."
"I-I don't know. Can I think about it for a little?"
"Of course you can. But just know, that I already cleared a space for you in the office...so..." He laughs causing me to smile.
"I'll think about it." I smile and he leans down and kisses me.
"Good."
"I've gotta get going. I don't want to leave Rylin alone with Everest for to long."
"Oh yeah, cause of her liking him?"
"How do you know that?"
"Oh please, everyone can see it."
"Don't tell her that." I smile and kiss him one more time before getting in the car. "Call me if you need anything when your mom gets here."
"I will." He smiles and I turn the car on and head back home. I pull into the driveway next to my car and head inside. Before I can open the door, I hear a bunch of banging around and loud noises. I swing the door open and run to where the noise is coming from. I immediately stop as I see pots and pans on the ground and both Everest and Rylin turn around and look at me. I give them a questionable look and they both smile.
"Everest trying to cook?" I ask with a smile.
"Look, okay. I can explain. I was trying to find a certain pan and I digging through all the other ones, aaaaand they fell."
"A certain pan? I didn't even know you knew the difference between a pot and a pan."
"Don't let him kid you." Rylin says. "I told him what I needed, that's when he started digging."
"Riiiight. Right." I walk over to the dining room table and set Everest's keys down and my purse. "So, what are you attempting to cook?" I ask as I walk back over to the stools by the kitchen counter.
"Steak." Everest says.
"Why don't you just stick to the normal way you make steak? You know, on the grill?"
"I gave him a new recipe and you have to grill them up on a pan." Rylin says.
"Okey doke. Whatever you say. I'm gonna go to my room. I've got some stuff to do."
"You gonna tell me what Steve said about his mother?" Rylin asks me as I stand up from the stools. Everest just looks at me with a surprised look on his face.
"Uhh, later?"
"Yeah, sure." As I walk away I hear ever Everest ask her what she means. I didn't bother to stick around and listen. I walk into my room and shut the door and pull up Teagans number. I guess I should catch her up on some stuff since she's one of the few people- WAS one of the few people who knew everything about my past. I had already told her about what had happened, but she told me I had to call her every week to 'catch up' aka spy on me.
'Well hello there best friend.' Teagan says, answering the phone.
'Hi there.'
'How have you been?'
'Good. Yeah. Not to much going on. What about you?'
'Just the usual. Wedding planning and all. You're still coming right? It's in two weeks.'
'Of course I am. Already bought the plane tickets.'
'Good good. Any closer to finding a job?'
'Actually...yeah. I think. I don't know yet.'
'What do you mean?'
'Well, Steve offered me a spot on five-0.'
'WHAT?! Are you gonna take it?'
'I don't know. I mean, I know that everything is finally in the past but...if I do this, who knows what could follow with that.'
'Brook, you love that kind of work. Of course some stuff might come with it, but you will be working alongside Steve and his team. And from what you've told me, they're the best people to trust.'
'I know. I told Steve I would think about it. I just have to think it through.'
'Good. Just think about it. I think it would be good for you. Listen, I've gotta go. Jonathan and I are going to taste cakes.'
'Okay. Have fun. Choose a good one. I don't want to be eating gross, dry cake.' Teagan just laughs.
'I promise. I'll see you in a couple weeks.'
'Sounds good.' We both hang up and I end up just sitting on my bed, seriously considering taking the offer...
