Up
Shortie & Knight
â¢Amethystâ¢
I tied up my hair as I walked out of the locker room, smiling to myself when I saw that I was the first girl changed. I quickly looped my hair-tie one last time before going to the side and stretching.
It was the day after Max and I made our first video to put on YouTube. Gym was one of my last classes and one of the many classes that I had with Max.
I never really noticed how close me and Max got until I thought about it while stretching. We had several classes together and hung out after school (when I didn't have dance or he didn't have boxing) and we texted each other before we went to sleep. I was pretty comfortable around him, which is unusual for a shy person like me. He was also super nice when he was around me and his friends but scary when he was with other people.
We also had nicknames for each other.
"Hey girl," a happy voice greeted when a shadow was cast over me.
I looked up and smiled at Kyle's smiling face. "Hi Kyle!" I cheered as I got up from a lunge.
I hugged him tightly, making him laugh and wrap his arms around me as well.
"I heard that we're playing Capture the Flag today," he said as we both started stretching.
I smiled. "I like that game."
He smirked. "Because you always win it for your team."
I shrugged. "I'm mostly put on defense and I'm not very good at it."
He rolled his eyes before changing his stretch. "You've gotten half of the team's flag belts one time-no- every time."
I blushed a bit. "I never really payed attention to that stuff. I just chase and pull the flag."
"Or get the actual flag, the objective of the whole game. Honey, you are the reason why whatever team you're on, wins."
I smiled. "Thanks."
"No problem, babe," he said with a smile.
"You're a fast changer, shortie," a deep voice commented from behind me.
I jumped in surprise and made a small squeak, causing Kyle to chuckle. I blushed and turned around to see Max smiling down at me. I hopped out from my stretch and hugged him, his large arms wrapping around my small frame as I did so.
I'm really short, aren't I? I thought to myself.
"The height difference is unreal between you two," Kyle pointed out once I pulled away from Max.
We both laughed and looked at each other.
"Talking to you makes my neck hurt," I muttered to Max.
He smirked. "Same here, shortie."
Once everyone came in and Coach O. explained that we were playing Capture the Flag, we went outside at stood on either side of the team wearing different colored flag belts. Max and I's side was blue and Kyle's side was yellow. When everyone was done with their flags, Coach blew the whistle, starting the game.
Several people from either sides started to run, Max and I being one of them.
I quickly ran and grabbed two people's flags- ripping them off and getting them out of the game- without even stopping to look back at them. I ran into the other side of the field and smirked when I saw five guys run at me. They were all on the football team so I would have to work a little harder than I normally would, but I was fine with that.
The first guy quickly ran in front of me and tried to block my way from running, moving from side to side as he did so. I chuckled slightly and made a sharp right, causing him to jump to get to me but I was too fast for him to reach me in time. He fell on his stomach and the other four jumped over him, not even asking if he was okay. Two ran up on either side of me, closing in every few seconds. I rolled my eyes and looked behind me to see the two others behind me.
I quickly came up with my plan.
The two were right on my tail and the others were getting very close to me. I kept changing my direction and swerving to throw them off a bit, but they caught on quickly and moved along with me. The two on my side reached out to my belt just as the two in the back did. I laughed before abruptly crouching to the floor, causing the two in the back to fall forward, since they were leaning to reach me, and fall right on their stomachs, grabbing onto the other boys for balance and taking them down with them.
I laughed again and popped up before jumping over them and heading towards the flag. Max was already keeping most of them busy by expertly dodging them, the people trying so hard to keep up. I sped up a bit and soon made it to the pole with the flag on it.
I jumped up and grabbed it before sprinting in the direction to my field. A few people who were paying attention to Max had spotted me and ran my way, making me speed up as fast as my small legs could take me.
A few kids here and there tried to get to me but I just dodged them and kept my eye on the prize. One person came out from nowhere, getting me a bit off guard, but right when they were about to get to me I felt a tug at my collar and my body being lifted off the ground.
I gasped and looked back to see Max easily lifting me over he person's head- with one arm- before setting me down. I didn't hesitate to think about what happened at kept running to my side of the field.
Too bad Kyle popped up in front of me right as I was about to cross the line.
"Sorry, cutie, but I'm going to have to stop you right there," he said with his signature smirk.
I raised an eyebrow and stopped, putting my arms behind my back so he wouldn't see the flag.
"Who are you referring to?" I asked slyly, slightly out of breath.
He chuckled. "Both."
I slowly walked over to Max, discretely holding out the flag towards him. He easily grabbed it but Kyle didn't notice. I looked up at him mouthed: "Go left and I'll go right."
He nodded before we both sprinted on opposite sides of Kyle. Kyle fell for my plan and ran after me before grabbing onto my flag and pulling it off, smirking like he won the game.
"Sorry cutie, you're going to have to give me that back," he said in a patronizing tone.
I smirked. "Actually," I pointed to Max who was waving the his flag over his head, "I don't have the flag, cutie. Besides," I pointed to the line that separated our two side of the field, "I crossed the line before you grabbed my flag." I yanked his flag off and dropped it onto the ground right in front of his face. "I win." I said in the same patronizing voice as he did.
His jaw dropped just as everyone on my side of the field cheered and Coach blew his whistle. I smirked evilly before running over to Max, who was crowded by a bunch of celebrating teens, and gave him a high-five.
He suddenly grabbed my waist and sat me in one of his shoulders before chanting. "Amy, Amy, Amy!"
Everyone around him smiled and started to chant along. Soon, everyone on the blue team was cheering with us while the yellow team trudged around with frowns. I giggled and blushed slightly as everyone chanted my name, not used to getting all the attention whenever I won a game.
"You've done it again, shortie," Max whispered to me.
I smiled. "With the help of my knight in shining armor."
He chuckled. "It's my job to serve."

I quickly ran out of my dance school and jumped into my car, eager to get home and eat dinner. I had rehearsal for four hours that night and I was honestly really tired and sweaty. We had had a break because they were remodeling the rooms since the school was old. It was definitely easier to dance on the new floors, my shoes, clothes, or hair not getting stuck in the large gaps in the floor anymore.
As I started to drive off, I got a FaceTime call from Max. I giggled a bit and answered the call, his contact photo making me laugh.
"Hey knight," I greeted.
He smiled. "Hi shortie."
"Since when did you change your contact photo to that one of us making a funny face?" I asked.
He shrugged. "I wanted to. Besides, you look so stupid, I couldn't help myself!"
I gasped in mock offense. "I thought I looked beautiful!"
He rolled his eyes. "Then you're delusional."
I scoffed. "I'll hang up in five seconds if you don't tell me why you called."
He chuckled. "I need to know the outfit for tomorrow. You know? The day of the presentation? The one we've been working on for two weeks now?"
I rolled my eyes. "Yes, I know. I'll send you the pictures when I get home, I've gotta go now though. Bye."
"Bye shortie," He said with a wave and hung up the phone.
I'm not delusional, am I? I mean, I thought I looked pretty... maybe it's just because he doesn't like me like that. Or maybe he's telling the truth, or lying.
"Boys freaking suck!" I groaned as I turned into my driveway.
