: Chapter 27
Forging Silver into Stars
After what happened in the barn, I shouldnât be surprised when I find Lord Alek blocking the doorway out of my pantry, but somehow I am. As it is, Iâve got my arms full with a sack of sugar and a platter full of butter, and I nearly walk straight into him.
He catches the bag of sugar before it can spill out on his boots, and I somehow manage to avoid getting a face full of butter. Weâre down the hallway from the main part of the bakery, and I can hear the bustle of the people waiting in line. I scowl up at him. âHave you ever considered announcing yourself like a gentleman?â I demand.
âWhat do you know of gentlemen?â he says.
âNot much from you.â
He smiles, but thereâs something tense about it. âDo you have any letters from Lady Karyl?â
I frown. I was ready for him to banter back, and the fact that he doesnât is ⦠disappointing. But of course thatâs ridiculous. Heâs never here for me, heâs here for business.
I square my shoulders and shove these thoughts out of my head.
âNo. I havenât seen anyone since I tried to stab you with the pitchfork.â I peer past him. âMy lord, Nora is alone with the customersââ
âThis is important.â
âSo is my sister.â
He sighs, then moves to set the sack of sugar on the floor.
âJust give it to me,â I say, gesturing. âI need to get back into the bakery.â
âCallynââ
âIf you didnât want me to be busy, you shouldnât have sent all these customers my way!â
Alek moves closer and drops his voice. âTycho has returned to Briarlock. Lord Jacob is with him this time.â He says this with the gravity of someone delivering news of a death in the family, and his blue eyes are burning into mine. âThey were seen approaching your friendâs forge.â
I feign a gasp. âNot Lord Jacob.â
He nods, but I stare back at him and respond with equal gravity, though mine is a little mocking. âI donât know who that is.â
He swears and looks away, running a hand through his hair. âHe is the kingâs closest friend and adviser.â
Oh, is that all. âWell, youâre from one of the Royal Houses. Surely he canât be too intimidating.â
âHeâs not intimidating, heâsââ He breaks off and swears again. The sack of sugar hits the floor, and he grips my arms. âDo you not understand? If heâs here, I need to know why. I need to know what heâs doing. We chose Briarlock because itâs not a popular town. Lady Karyl chose Jax because his father had been loyal in the past. But the Kingâs Courier has been seen here many timesâand now heâs joined by Lord Jacob. How do you not seeââ
âI see!â I try to wrench free. My heart wonât stop pounding, and I canât believe that a moment ago there was any part of me that was hoping heâd come here for any other reason than to save his own neck. âWould you let me go?â
He doesnât. âHave they been here?â
âI havenât seen Lord Tycho.â Alekâs eyes are dangerously intent on mine, and I swallow. âIÂ havenât. And I havenât talked to Jax.â
After a long moment, his hands gentle on my arms, and he sighs. âForgive me.â
âI need to get back to the front.â I hesitate. âMy lord.â
âI need you to find out what they want. Why theyâre here.â
I want to punch him in the face. âIâve hardly talked to Jax in weeks, because of you, and now you want me to suddenly ask why two lords were visiting his forge? Maybe they needed iron work.â
âMaybe theyâll visit the bakery next, and when I see you again, youâll be swinging from a rope.â His voice is cold, but surprisingly ⦠that doesnât sound like a threat. It sounds like a worry. I canât tell if itâs for himself or for me, and I hate that thereâs something about him thatâs even raised the question in my thoughts. âCallyn. Truly. I need to know why theyâre here. You need to know why theyâre here. Think of your home. Think of your sister.â
I swallow. âIâm always thinking of my sister. Itâs the only reason Iâm helping you at all.â
His expression doesnât flicker. âIs it really?â
Yes. No.
Maybe it was. But itâs not anymore. I wet my lips and shake my head. âWhatââ My voice is breathy, and I tell myself to knock it off. âWhat do I do if they come here?â
He pulls coins from a pocket and presses them into my palm. âYouâre going to tell the truth. I came here, gave you a few coins, and took a few pastries. You donât know my plans.â
âWhat are your plans?â I say.
He smiles. âIf I tell you that, your answer will be a lie.â
âCally-cal!â Nora calls from the main room. âCally-cal, I need you!â
I glance past him. âI need to get back.â
âOf course you do.â He picks up the sack of sugar and hands it to me. âUntil later, Callyn.â
âUntil later,â I say flippantly. I turn away, but then think better of it, and turn back to ask what will happen if this Lord Jacob brings more than just questions.
But Lord Alek is already gone.
