CH 3
My Girlfriend Who Is Older Than Me Teases Me When I'm Working At A Bar, But Maybe Because Of Alcohol, Her Face Turns Bright Red Very Quickly.
Thin, crimson-colored clouds. Itâs that time of day when soft golden sunlight reflects off the glass windows.
âHey, Mio-chan, are you leaving already? Isnât it early?â
As Mio begins packing her belongings into her bag after the final lecture of the day, Nanami wonders curiously.
âItâs true that Iâm planning to leave, but why do you ask?â
âWell, you usually stay behind to study, so I was wondering if you were going to stay today too.â
âItâs true that I often stay behind to study, but I donât do it every day.â
Nanami has plans to go home with her boyfriend, knowing that Mio stays behind to study at the nursing university until she contacts her.
âOh, by the way, Mio-chan, do you go home early on Mondays?â
âYes, thatâs right.â
âAre you doing something like a lesson or something? Knowing you, it wouldnât be strange if you were.â
âNo, itâs nothing so grand. Just a drinking place.â
âWhat!? You drink, Mio-chan!?â
âI do drink, but only in moderation. You donât have to be so surprised.â
Nanami was amazed by this revelation because theyâve never talked about alcohol before. Mio began going to drinking establishments about six months ago.
âBy drinking place, do you mean a bar?â
âYes, itâs a place run by an acquaintance of my motherâs. They take good care of me there. Why donât you come with me next time, Nanami?â
âUm, Iâm not sure if Iâm up for it! Iâm not very knowledgeable about alcohol, and I get intimidated by bars and trendy places.â
âThatâs too bad⦠but if you ever feel like it, please let me know.â
âOkay, thanks! Iâll definitely take you up on that!â
The two smile and make that promise. Mio and Nanami have completely different personalities, but they are true best friends. They will surely continue to build a good relationship in the future.
âBut Mio-chan, since youâre so pretty, you have to be careful, you know? Those kinds of places tend to attract trouble. Have you ever been bothered by someone before?â
âWell, itâs a place where people drink, so I do get bothered sometimesâ¦but itâs okay. The bartender always helps me out.â
âI see.â
Mio replied with a gentle voice and a smile on her face. She never forgot the bartender who helped her when she was being bothered by someone before.
Despite the influence of alcohol, that person remained calm and dealt with arrogant and hostile customers while still showing concern for the person being bothered. Mio admired the bartenderâs handling of the situation and had kept the experience in her memory.
âYou really trust that bartender, donât you, Mio-chan?â
âWh-what are you trying to sayâ¦?â
Mio protested with a pleading look as Nanami smirked.
âOh, itâs just that you seemed so happy talking about him, so I figured you must like him or something.â
âI wasnât talking happily about himâ¦â
âOh, I get it! You want to take care of him, right? Mio-chan, youâre overprotective, and you seem like youâre into older guys!â
After graduating from nursing university, Mio would be able to use her nursing or health care license to work in a general hospital or a university hospital, both public and private. Itâs a job that involves taking care of people who are disabled or sick. If you donât like taking care of others, it would be difficult to work there, and Mio probably wouldnât have gone to this university if that were the case.
âWhy do you always assume things like that? And how did you even come to the conclusion that I like older guysâ¦? That bartender is only one year younger than us, you know?â
âHuh? Wait, what? Heâs a bartender and heâs younger than us?! I thought he was supposed to be an elderly person or something!â
Not many people associate bartenders with being in their twenties. They tend to imagine someone in their forties or fifties because itâs a job that requires expertise in handling alcohol. Nanami was one of those people who had that image in her mind.
âHeâs just a part-time worker there. Heâs been working at that bar for about a year.â
âI see, I see. So thatâs what you meantâ¦â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, Mio-chan, youâre interested in him, arenât you? He works the Monday shift, and you always leave early on Mondays. So itâs like youâre adjusting your schedule just to see him!â
ââ¦â
Mio had no response to Nanamiâs confident accusation as she leaned in closer with a proud expression.
âTh-this is not it⦠I was just lost in thought.â
âOh, I see. Then explain it to me. You should be able to, right?â
âUm⦠well⦠â
Mio was good at connecting her thoughts quickly and speaking, but she stumbled over her words. Nanamiâs words had hit the mark⦠it couldnât be helped.
And then⦠Mio thought of that person and lowered her face, fidgeting with her hands.
âHey, youâre not saying anything! I thought you were just reacting strangely to the topic of your crush. Oh, I see, I see!â
âThatâs not it! I-I donât like that person!â
âWell, well, itâs okay, itâs okay! Youâve got a crush!â
âPlease listen to meâ¦!!â
âBut hey⦠You said you wanted to talk about your crush, and here you are reacting like that, Mio-chan. Youâve already got a crush, havenât you!â
Nanami teased Mio, slapping her on the shoulder with a grin. Anyone who saw her previous reaction would assume that she liked that person.
âThatâs not⦠what Iâ¦â
âSo thatâs why youâve been cutting guys off all this time, huh? Mio-chan, youâre in love with that person.â
They were best friends, so Nanami enjoyed teasing her with persistence. But that was unavoidable. Mio had never talked about love before.
Mio might also have a boyfriend⦠that was a happy topic for Nanami too.
âCome on, we have to hurry home, or you wonât be able to see that bartender! Hurry up and make time for him!â
âI-I donât care anymoreâ¦â
Overwhelmed by the storm of teasing and questioning, Mio, who had turned as red as the setting sun, grabbed her bag and ran out of the classroom.
âOh no, I teased her too much⦠I have to apologizeâ¦â
Watching Mio run away as if she were fleeing, Nanami muttered to herself and opened LAIN on her smartphone. Then she sent a text message with a face emoji saying âSorry about earlier!â
Feeling guilty, Nanami closed her phone and slowly sat down in her seat.
(Butâ¦Â that man-slayer Mio-chan fell in love with someoneâ¦? I wonder what kind of person he is.)
She murmured to herself in her heart while waiting for a message from her boyfriend.
