Ignite Me: Chapter 67
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
Kenji grabs my arm.
Everyone else is going up and out of Warnerâs room, but Kenji and I will head out the back way, alerting no one to our presence. We want everyone, even the soldiers, to think we are in the midst of battle. We donât want to show up only to disappear; we donât want anyone to notice weâre missing.
So we stand back and watch as our friends load into the elevator to go up to the main floor. James is still waving as the doors close and leave him behind.
My heart stops for a second.
Kenji kisses James good-bye. Itâs an obnoxious, noisy kiss, right on top of his head. âWatch my back, okay?â he says to James. âIf anyone comes in here, I want you to kick the shit out of them.â
âOkay,â James says. Heâs laughing to pretend heâs not crying.
âIâm serious,â Kenji says. âJust start whaling on them. Like just go batshit.â He makes a weird fighting motion with his hands. âGet super crazy,â he says. âBeat the crazy with crazyââ
âNo one is going to come in here, James,â I say, shooting a sharp look at Kenji. âYou wonât have to worry about defending yourself. Youâre going to be perfectly safe. And then weâll come back.â
âReally?â he asks, turning his eyes on me. âAll of you?â
Smart kid.
âYes,â I lie. âAll of us are going to come back.â
âOkay,â he whispers. He bites down on his trembling lip. âGood luck.â
âNo tears necessary,â Kenji says to him, wrapping him up in a ferocious hug. âWeâll be back soon.â
James nods.
Kenji breaks away.
And then we head out the door in the gun wall.
The first part, I think, is going to be the hardest. Our trek to the port will be made entirely on foot, because we canât risk stealing vehicles. Even if Kenji could make the tank invisible, weâd have to abandon it in its visible form, and an extra, unexpected tank stationed at the port would be too much of a giveaway.
Anderson must have his place completely guarded.
Kenji and I donât speak as we move. When Delalieu told us the supreme would be stationed at the port, Kenji immediately knew where it was. So did Warner and Adam and Castle and just about everyone except for me. âI spent some time on one of those ships,â Kenji said. âJust for a bit. For bad behavior.â He smiled. âI know my way around.â
So Iâm holding on to his arm and heâs leading the way.
Thereâs never been a colder day, I think. Never been more ice in the air.
This ship looks like a small city; itâs so enormous I canât even see the end of it. We scan the perimeter, attempting to gauge exactly how difficult itâll be to infiltrate the premises.
Extremely difficult.
Nearly impossible.
These are Kenjiâs exact words.
Sort of.
âShit,â he says. âThis is ridiculous. I have never seen this level of security before. This is backed up,â he says.
And heâs right. There are soldiers everywhere. On land. At the entrance. On deck. And theyâre all so heavily armed it makes me feel stupid with my two handguns and the simple holster swung around my shoulders.
âSo what do we do?â
Heâs quiet a moment. âCan you swim?â
âWhat? No.â
âShit.â
âWe canât just jump in the ocean, Kenjiââ
âWell itâs not like we can fly.â
âMaybe we can fight them?â
âAre you out of your goddamn mind? You think we can take on two hundred soldiers? I know I am an extremely attractive man, J, but I am not Bruce Lee.â
âWhoâs Bruce Lee?â
âWhoâs Bruce Lee?â Kenji asks, horrified. âOh my God. We canât even be friends anymore.â
âWhy? Was he a friend of yours?â
âYou know what,â he says, âjust stop. JustâI canât even talk to you right now.â
âThen how are we supposed to get inside?â
âShit if I know. How are we supposed to get all those guys off the ship?â
âOh,â I gasp. âOh my God. Kenjiââ I grab his invisible arm.
âYeah, thatâs my leg, and youâre cutting it a little too close there, princess.â
âKenji, I can shove them off,â I say, ignoring him. âI can just push them into the water. Will that work?â
Silence.
âWell?â I ask.
âYour hand is still on my leg.â
âOh.â I jerk back. âSo? What do you think? Will it work?â
âObviously,â Kenji says, exasperated. âDo it now, please. And hurry.â
So I do.
I stand back and pull all my energy up and into my arms.
Power, harnessed.
Arms, positioned.
Energy, projected.
I move my arm through the air like I might be clearing off a table.
And all the soldiers topple into the water.
It looks almost comical from here. Like they were a bunch of toys I was pushing off my desk. And now theyâre bouncing in the water, trying to figure out whatâs just happened.
âLetâs go,â Kenji says suddenly, grabbing my arm. Weâre darting forward and down the hundred-foot pier. âTheyâre not stupid,â he says. âSomeone is going to sound the alarm and theyâre going to seal the doors soon. Weâve probably got a minute before it all goes on lockdown.â
So weâre bolting.
Weâre racing across the pier and clambering up, onto the deck, and Kenji pulls on my arm to tell me where to go. Weâre becoming so much more aware of each otherâs bodies now. I can almost feel his presence beside me, even though I canât see him.
âDown here,â he shouts, and I look down, spotting what looks like a narrow, circular opening with a ladder affixed to the inside. âIâm going in,â he says. âStart climbing down in five seconds!â
I can hear the alarms already going off, sirens wailing in the distance. The ship is steady against the dock, but the water in the distance goes on forever, disappearing into the edge of the earth.
My five seconds are up.
Iâm climbing after him.
