Ignite Me: Chapter 43
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
Alia has designed me a new suit.
Weâre sitting on the mats like we always do in the evenings, and right now, Alia is showing us her designs.
Iâve never seen her this animated before.
Sheâs more confident talking about the contents of her sketchbook than she is the weather. Sheâs talking fast and fluid, describing the details and the dimensions, even outlining the materials weâll need in order to make it.
Itâs built with carbon.
Carbon fibers, to be precise. She explained that carbon fibers are so stiff and abrasive that theyâll need to be bonded with something very flexible in order to become wearable, so sheâs planning on experimenting with several different materials. Something about polymers. And synthetic something. And a bunch of other words I didnât really understand. Her sketches show how the carbon fibers are literally woven into a textile, creating a durable and lightweight material that will serve as a stronger basis for what I need.
Her idea was inspired by the knuckle braces she made for me.
She said she originally wanted the suit to be made of thousands of pieces of gunmetal, but then she realized sheâd never have the tools to make the pieces as thin as sheâd like them, and therefore, the suit would be too heavy. But this is sounding just as amazing.
âItâll complement and enhance your strength,â sheâs saying to me. âThe carbon fibers will give you an added level of protection; they wonât damage easily, so youâll be able to move more freely through different terrains. And when youâre in a dangerous environment, you must remember to maintain a state of electricum at all times; that way your body will become virtually indestructible,â she says.
âWhat do you mean . . . ?â I look from her to Castle for clarification. âHow can that be possible?â
âBecause,â Alia explains. âIn the same way that you can break through concrete without hurting yourself, you should also be able to sustain an attackâfrom a bullet, for exampleâwithout harm.â She smiles. âYour powers make you functionally invincible.â
Wow.
âThis suit is a precaution more than anything else,â she goes on. âWeâve seen in the past that you can, in fact, damage your skin if youâre not wholly in control of your power. When you broke the ground in the research rooms,â she says, âwe thought it was the enormity of the act that injured you. But after examining the situation and your abilities more thoroughly, Castle and I found this deduction to be inaccurate.â
âOur energies are never inconsistent,â Castle jumps in, nodding at Alia. âThey follow a patternâan almost mathematical precision. If you cannot injure yourself while breaking through a concrete wall, it does not then follow that you should be able to injure yourself by breaking the ground, only to remain uninjured after breaking the ground a second time.â He looks at me. âYour injuries have to do with your hold on your ability. If you ever slip out of electricumâif you dial it back for even a momentâyou will be vulnerable. Remember to be on, at all times. If you do, you cannot be defeated.â
âI hate you so hard right now,â Kenji mutters under his breath. âFunctionally invincible my ass.â
âJealous?â I grin at him.
âI canât even look at you.â
âYou shouldnât be surprised.â Warner has just walked in. I spin around to find heâs heading toward our group, smiling a brittle smile at no one in particular. He sits down across from me. Meets my eyes as he says, âI always knew your powers, once harnessed, would be unmatched.â
I try to breathe.
Warner finally breaks eye contact with me to glance around the room. âGood evening, everyone,â he says. He nods at Castle. A special sort of acknowledgment.
Adam has a special sort of acknowledgment of his own.
Heâs staring at Warner with an intense, unmasked hatred, looking as though he truly wants to murder Warner, and Iâm suddenly more anxious than Iâve been all day. Iâm looking from Adam to Warner and back again and I donât know what to do. I donât know if something is about to happen and Iâm so desperate for things to be civil that Iâ
âHi,â James says, so loudly it startles all of us. Heâs looking at Warner. âWhat are you doing here?â
Warner raises an eyebrow. âI live here.â
âThis is your house?â James asks.
Strange. I wonder what Adam and Kenji told him about where they were going.
Warner nods. âIn some capacity, yes,â he says. âIt serves as my home. I live upstairs.â
âThatâs so cool,â James says, grinning. âThis whole place is so cool.â He frowns. âHey I thought we were supposed to hate you, though.â
âJames,â Adam says, shooting his brother a warning glance.
âWhat?â James asks.
âYou are free to hate me,â Warner says. âIf you want to. I donât mind.â
âWell you should mind,â James says, surprised. âIâd be really upset if someone hated me.â
âYou are young.â
âIâm almost twelve,â James says to him.
âI was told you were ten.â
âI said almost twelve.â James rolls his eyes. âHow old are you?â
Everyone is watching. Listening. Too fascinated to look away.
Warner studies James. Takes his time answering. âIâm nineteen years old.â
Jamesâs eyes go wide. âYouâre only a year older than Adam,â he says. âHow do you have so many nice things if youâre only a year older than Adam? I donât know anyone your age who has nice things.â
Warner looks over at me. Looks back at James. Looks at me again. âIs there nothing you want to add to this conversation, love?â
I shake my head. Smiling.
âWhy do you call her âloveâ?â James asks. âIâve heard you say that before, too. A lot. Are you in love with her? I think Adamâs in love with her. Kenjiâs not in love with her, though. I already asked him.â
Warner blinks at him.
âWell?â James asks.
âWell what?â
âAre you in love with her?â
âAre you in love with her?â
âWhat?â James blushes. âNo. Sheâs like a million years older than me.â
âWould anyone like to take over this conversation?â Warner asks, looking around the group.
âYou never answered my question,â James says. âAbout why you have so many things. Iâm not trying to be rude,â he says. âReally. Iâm just wondering. Iâve never taken a shower with hot water before. And you have so much food. It must be really nice to have so much food all the time.â
Warner flinches, unexpectedly. He looks more carefully at James. âNo,â he says slowly. âIt is not a terrible thing to have food and hot water all the time.â
âSo then are you going to answer my question? About where you got all this stuff?â
Warner sighs.
âI am the commander and regent of Sector 45,â he says. âWe are currently on an army base, where it is my job to oversee our soldiers and all the civilians who live on the accompanying compounds. I am paid to live here.â
âOh.â James goes pale in an instant; he suddenly looks inhumanly terrified. âYou work for The Reestablishment?â
âHey, itâs okay, buddy,â Kenji says to James. âYouâre safe here. Okay? No oneâs going to hurt you.â
âThis is the kind of guy youâre into, huh?â Adam snaps at me. âThe kind of guy who petrifies children?â
âItâs nice to see you again, Kent.â Warner is watching Adam now. âHow are you enjoying your stay?â
Adam seems to be fighting back the urge to say a lot of unkind things.
âSo you really work for them?â James is asking Warner again, his words just a breath, his eyes still frozen on Warnerâs face. Heâs shaking so hard it breaks my heart. âYou work for The Reestablishment?â
Warner hesitates. Looks away and looks back again. âTheoretically,â he says. âYes.â
âWhat do you mean?â James asks.
Warner is looking into his hands.
âWhat do you mean, theoretically?â James demands.
âAre you asking,â Warner says with a sigh, âbecause you are actually seeking clarification? Or is it because you donât know what the word theoretically means?â
James hesitates, his panic dissolving into frustration for a moment. He screws up his face, annoyed. âFine. What does theoretically mean?â
âTheoretically,â Warner says, âIâm supposed to work for The Reestablishment. But, obviously, as Iâm hosting a group of rebels on this government-owned military baseâin my private quarters, no lessâand sustaining said rebels so that they might overthrow our current regime, I would say no. I am not, exactly, working for The Reestablishment. I have committed treason,â he says to James. âA crime that is punishable by death.â
James stares at him for a long time. âThatâs what theoretically means?â
Warner looks up at the wall. Sighs again.
I bite back a laugh.
âSo, waitâthen youâre not the bad guy,â James says all of a sudden. âYouâre on our side, right?â
Warner turns slowly to meet Jamesâs eyes. Says nothing.
âWell?â James asks, impatient. âArenât you on our side?â
Warner blinks. Twice. âSo it seems,â he says, looking as though he can hardly believe heâs saying it.
âPerhaps we should get back to the suit,â Castle cuts in. Heâs looking at Warner, smiling triumphantly. âAlia has spent a long time designing it, and I know she has more details to share.â
âYeah,â Kenji says, excited. âThis looks badass, Alia. I want one. Can I have one?â
I wonder if Iâm the only person who notices that Warnerâs hands are shaking.
