Ignite Me: Chapter 21
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
The room is quiet for a long time. Iâve dropped my eyes, too afraid to see the looks on their faces.
Alia is the first to speak.
âIâll fight with you,â she says, her soft voice ringing strong and confident in the silence. I look up to meet her eyes and she smiles, her cheeks flushed with color and determination.
But before I even have a chance to respond, Winston jumps in.
âMe too,â he says. âAs soon as my head stops hurting, but yeah, me too. Iâve got nothing left to lose,â he says with a shrug. âAnd Iâll kick some ass just to get the girls back, even if we canât save the rest of the world.â
âSame,â Brendan says, nodding at me. âIâm in, too.â
Ian is shaking his head. âHow the hell can we trust this guy?â he asks. âHow do we know heâs not full of shit?â
âYeah,â Lily pipes up. âThis doesnât feel right.â She focuses her eyes on Warner. âWhy would you want to help any of us?â she asks him. âSince when have you ever been trustworthy?â
Warner runs a hand through his hair. Smiles unkindly. Glances at me.
Heâs not amused.
âI am not trustworthy,â Warner finally says, looking up to meet Lilyâs eyes. âAnd I have no interest in helping you,â he says. âIn fact, I think I was very clear just a moment ago when I said that I was here for Juliette. I did not sign up to help her friends, and I will make zero guarantees for your survival or your safety. So if youâre seeking reassurance,â he says, âI can, and will, offer you none.â
Ian is actually smiling.
Lily looks a little mollified.
Kenji is shaking his head.
âAll right.â Ian nods. âThatâs cool.â He rubs his forehead. âSo whatâs the game plan?â
âHave you all lost your minds?â Adam explodes. âAre you forgetting who youâre talking to? He just busts down our door and demands to take Juliette away and you want to stand by his side and fight with him? The same guy whoâs responsible for destroying Omega Point?â he says. âEveryone is dead because of him!â
âI am not responsible for that,â Warner says sharply, his expression darkening. âThat was not my call, nor did I have any idea it was happening. By the time I broke out of Omega Point and found my way back to base, my fatherâs plans were already under way. I was not a part of the battle, nor was I a part of the assault on Omega Point.â
âItâs true,â Lily says. âThe supreme is the one who ordered the air strike against Omega Point.â
âYeah, and as much as I hate this guy by default,â Winston adds, jerking a thumb at Warner, âI hate his father a whole hell of a lot more. Heâs the one who kidnapped us. It was his men who held us captive; not the soldiers of Sector 45. So yeah,â Winston says, stretching back on the couch, âIâd love to watch the supreme die a slow, miserable death.â
âI have to admit,â Brendan says, âIâm not often keen on revenge, but it does sound very sweet right now.â
âI want to watch that bastard bleed,â Ian says.
âHow nice that we all have something in common,â Warner mutters, irritated. He sighs. Looks at me. âJuliette, a word, please?â
âThis is bullshit!â Adam shouts. He looks around. âHow can you all so easily forget yourselves? How can you forget what heâs doneâwhat he did to meâwhat he did to Kenji?â Adam pivots to face me then. âHow can you even look at him,â he says to me, âknowing how he treated us? He nearly murdered meâleaving me to bleed out slowly so he could take his time torturing me to deathââ
âKent, man, pleaseâyou need to calm down, okay?â Kenji steps forward. âI understand that youâre pissedâIâm not happy about this eitherâbut things get crazy in the aftermath of war. Alliances form in unlikely ways.â He shrugs. âIf this is the only way to take Anderson out, maybe we should considerââ
âI canât believe this.â Adam cuts him off, looking around. âI canât believe this is happening. Youâve all lost your minds. Youâre all insane,â he says, gripping the back of his head. âThis guy is a psychoâheâs a murdererââ
âAdam,â I try to say. âPleaseââ
âWhatâs happened to you?â He turns on me. âI donât even know who you are anymore. I thought you were deadâI thought heâd killed you,â he says, pointing at Warner. âAnd now youâre standing here, teaming up with the guy who tried to ruin your life? Talking about fighting back because you have nothing left to live for? What about me?â he demands. âWhat about our relationship? When did that stop being enough for you?â
âThis isnât about us,â I try to tell him. âPlease, Adamâlet me explainââ
âI have to get out of here,â he says abruptly, moving toward the door. âI canât be here right nowâI canât process all of this in one day. Itâs too much,â he says. âItâs too much for meââ
âAdamââ I catch his arm in one last attempt, one last effort to try and talk to him, but he breaks away.
âAll of this,â he says, meeting my eyes, his voice quieting to a raw, aching whisper, âwas for you. I left everything I knew because I thought we were in this together. I thought it was going to be me and you.â His eyes are so dark, so deep, so hurt. Looking at him makes me want to curl up and die. âWhat are you doing?â he says, desperate now. âWhat are you thinking?â
And I realize he actually wants an answer.
Because he waits.
He stands there, and he waits. Waits to hear my response while everyone watches us, likely entertained by the spectacle weâve made. I canât believe heâs doing this to me. Here. Right now. In front of everyone.
In front of Warner.
I try to meet Adamâs eyes, but find I canât hold his gaze for very long.
âI donât want to live in fear anymore,â I say, hoping I sound stronger than I feel. âI have to fight back,â I tell him. âI thought we wanted the same things.â
âNoâI wanted you,â he says, struggling to keep his voice steady. âThatâs all I wanted. From the very beginning, Juliette. You were it. You were all I wanted.â
And I canât speak.
I canât speak
I canât cough up the words because I canât break his heart like this but heâs waiting, heâs waiting and heâs looking at me and âI need more,â I choke out. âI wanted you, too, Adam, but I need more than that. I need to be free. Please, try to understandââ
âSTOP!â Adam explodes. âStop trying to get me to understand a bunch of bullshit! I canât deal with you anymore.â And then he grabs the jacket sitting on the sofa, hauls the door open, and slams it shut behind him.
Thereâs a moment of absolute silence.
I try to run after him.
Kenji catches me around the waist, yanks me backward. Gives me a hard, knowing look. âIâll take care of Kent. You stay here and clean up the mess you made,â he says, cocking his head at Warner.
I swallow, hard. Donât say a word.
Itâs only after Kenji has disappeared that I turn around to face the remaining members of our audience, and Iâm still searching for the right thing to say when I hear the one voice I least expected.
âAh, Ms. Ferrars,â Castle says. âItâs so good to have you back. Things are always so much more entertaining when youâre around.â
Ian bursts into tears.
