Ignite Me: Chapter 14
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
Warner tackles me to the ground just as the sound of gunshots fills the air.
His arms are under me, cradling me to his chest, his body shielding mine from whatever imminent danger weâve just gotten ourselves into. My heart is beating so loudly I can hardly hear Warnerâs voice as he speaks into my ear. âAre you all right?â he whispers, pulling me tighter against him.
I try to nod.
âStay down,â he says. âDonât move.â
I wasnât planning on it, I donât say to him.
âSTEP AWAY FROM HER, YOU WORTHLESS SACK OF SHITââ
My body goes stiff.
That voice. I know that voice.
I hear footsteps coming closer, crunching on the snow and ice and dirt. Warner loosens his hold around me, and I realize heâs reaching for his gun.
âKenjiânoâ,â I try to shout, my voice muffled by the snow.
âGET UP!â Kenji bellows, still moving closer. âStand up, coward!â
Iâve officially begun to panic.
Warnerâs lips brush against my ear. âIâll be right back.â
Just as I turn to protest, Warnerâs weight is lifted. His body gone. Heâs completely disappeared.
I scramble to my feet, spinning around.
My eyes land on Kenji.
Heâs stopped in place, confused and scanning the area, and Iâm so happy to see him that I canât be bothered to care about Warner right now. Iâm almost ready to cry. I squeak out Kenjiâs name.
His eyes lock on to mine.
He charges forward, closing the gap between us and tackling me in a hug so fierce he practically cuts off my circulation. âHoly shit itâs good to see you,â he says, breathless, squeezing me tighter.
I cling to him, so relieved, so stunned. I press my eyes shut, unable to stop the tears.
Kenji pulls back to look me in the eye, his face bright with pain and joy. âWhat the hell are you doing out here? I thought you were deadââ
âI thought you were dead!â
He stops then. The smile vanishes from his face. âWhere the hell did Warner go?â he says, eyes taking in our surroundings. âYou were with him, right? Iâm not losing my mind, am I?â
âYesâlistenâWarner brought me here,â I tell him, trying to speak calmly, hoping to cool the anger in his eyes. âBut heâs not trying to fight. When he told me about what happened to Omega Point, I didnât believe him, so I asked him to show me proofââ
âIs that right?â Kenji says, eyes flashing with a kind of hatred Iâve never seen in him before. âHe came to show off what they did? To show you how many people he MURDERED!â Kenji breaks away from me, shaking with fury. âDid he tell you how many children were in there? Did he tell you how many of our men and women were slaughtered because of him?â He stops, heaving. âDid he tell you that?â he asks again, screaming into the air. âCOME BACK OUT HERE, YOU SICK BASTARD!â
âKenji, noââ
But Kenjiâs already gone, darting away so quickly heâs just a speck in the distance now. I know heâs searching the vast space for glimpses of Warner and I need to do something, I need to stop him but I donât know howâ âDonât move.â
Warnerâs whispers are at my ear, his hands planted firmly on my shoulders. I try to spin around and he holds me in place. âI said donât move.â
âWhat are you dââ
âShhhh,â he says. âNo one can see me.â
âWhat?â I crane my neck to try and glance behind me, but my head knocks against Warnerâs chin. His invisible chin.
âNo,â I hear myself gasp. âBut youâre not touching himââ
âLook straight ahead,â he whispers. âIt wonât do us any good for you to be caught talking to invisible people.â
I turn my face forward. Kenji is no longer in sight. âHow?â I ask Warner. âHow did youââ
Warner shrugs behind me. âIâve felt different since we did that experiment with your power. Now that I know exactly what itâs like to take hold of another ability, Iâm more easily able to recognize it. Like right now,â he says. âI feel as though I could quite literally reach forward and take hold of your energy. It was just as simple with Kenji,â he says. âHe was standing right there. My survival instincts took over.â
And even though this is a terrible moment to dwell on these things, I canât help but allow myself to panic. That Warner can so easily project his powers. With no training. No practice.
He can tap into my abilities and use them as he pleases.
This canât possibly be good.
Warnerâs hands squeeze my shoulders.
âWhat are you doing?â I whisper.
âIâm trying to see if I can pass the power on to youâif I can retransfer it and make us both invisibleâbut it seems Iâm unable. Once Iâve taken the energy from someone else, I can use it, but I canât seem to share it. After I release the energy, it can only be returned to the owner.â
âHow do you know so much already?â I ask, astonished. âYou just learned about this a few days ago.â
âIâve been practicing,â he says.
âBut how? With who?â I pause. âOh.â
âYes,â he says. âItâs been rather incredible having you stay with me. For so many reasons.â His hands fall from my shoulders. âI was worried I might be able to hurt you with your own power. I wasnât sure I could absorb it without accidentally using it against you. But we seem to cancel each other out,â he says. âOnce I take it from you, I can only ever give it back.â
Iâm not breathing.
âLetâs go,â Warner says. âKenji is moving out of range and I wonât be able to hold on to his energy for much longer. We have to get out of here.â
âI canât leave,â I tell him. âI canât just abandon Kenji, not like thisââ
âHeâs going to try and kill me, love. And while I know Iâve proved otherwise in your case, I can assure you Iâm generally incapable of standing by as someone makes an attempt on my life. So unless you want to watch me shoot him first, I suggest we get out of here as soon as possible. I can feel him circling back.â
âNo. You can go. You should go. But Iâm going to stay here.â
Warner stills behind me. âWhat?â
âGo,â I tell him. âYou have to go to the compoundsâyou have things to take care of. You should go. But I need to be here. I have to know whatâs happened to everyone else, and I have to move forward from there.â
âYouâre asking me to leave you here,â he says, not bothering to hide his shock. âIndefinitely.â
âYes,â I say to him. âIâm not leaving until I get some answers. And youâre right. Kenji will definitely shoot first and ask questions later, so itâs best that you leave. Iâll talk to him, try to tell him whatâs happened. Maybe we could all work togetherââ
âWhat?â
âIt doesnât just have to be me and you,â I tell him. âYou said you wanted to help me kill your father and take down The Reestablishment, right?â
Warner nods slowly against the back of my head.
âOkay. So.â I take a deep breath. âI accept your offer.â
Warner goes rigid. âYou accept my offer.â
âYes.â
âDo you understand what youâre saying?â
âI wouldnât say it if I didnât mean it. Iâm not sure Iâll be able to do this without you.â
I feel the breath rush out of him, his heart beating hard against my back.
âBut I need to know who else is still alive,â I insist. âAnd the group of us can work together. Weâll be stronger that way, and weâll all be fighting toward the same goalââ
âNo.â
âItâs the only wayââ
âI have to go,â he says, spinning me around. âKenji is almost here.â He shoves a hard plastic object into my hand. âActivate this pager,â he says, âwhenever youâre ready. Keep it with you and Iâll know where to find you.â
âButââ
âYou have four hours,â he says. âIf I donât hear from you before then, Iâll assume you are in some kind of danger, and I will come find you myself.â Heâs still holding my hand, the pager still pressed against my palm. Itâs the craziest feeling, to be touched by someone you canât see. âDo you understand?â
I nod, once. I have no idea where to look.
And then I freeze, every inch of me hot and cold all at once because he presses his lips to the back of my fingers in one soft, tender moment and when he pulls away Iâm reeling, heady, unsteady.
Just as Iâm regaining my footing, I hear the familiar sound of an electric thrum, and realize Warner has already begun to drive away.
And Iâm left to wonder what on earth Iâve just agreed to.
