Just do it

Still moving through small towns, the men and floss were starting to recover their strength from the exhaustion they had been through.

Floss was also recovering her balance and her mental state was much better. The boys were happy to see her joking around again.

They were traveling to another small town and Floss was sat with Smokey discussing the theatre, which Flo had to admit she didn't think Smokey would be interested in.

"Seriously Floss, you have to come to New York with me when the wars over and see some of the shows on Broadway," he said clearly excited, "You can meet my sister, she would love you and she would be in awe of you Fizz"

"Smoke, I can't think why she would be in awe of me, but I would absolutely adore that, which one shall we see?"

"There are many plays, my favorite is At the stroke of eight, but my sister's favorite is Oklahoma!".  he said smiling happily.

"Well we can see both, then I can decide which is better" Flo smiled, "My favorite play in the West End is 42nd street, I miss going to the theatre with my mum" she smiled sadly.

Smokey put his arm around her and said "You will go again one day Flo". She smiled at him and patted his arm.

As they arrived in the city the locals started greeting them as they usually did. But one woman was running around asking in Dutch "Heeft u een dokter?" (Do you have a doctor?)

Flo immediately jumped off her truck and walked over to where the woman was asking Lieb and Perco.

She started talking to the woman saying "Ik ben een dokter, ik kan helpen" (I am a medic, I can help).

The woman grabbed her and said "Godzijdank, kom met mij me"

Flo followed the woman as she asked, and dragged Lieb and Perc with her.

When the woman dragged her into the small house, she heard a woman screaming and she knew what that meant.

She ran into the room to see a young woman lying on a mattress with another older woman holding her hand. Flo was panicking inside, she had never delivered a baby.

"Right Lieb, we need towels, scissors and grab me gloves from the med station."

"Okay" Lieb said running off.

"Perc I need you to hand me stuff when I need it" She said quickly.

"Hello lovely, what's your name?" she said in dutch

"Anna" the woman screamed.

Speaking in Dutch Flo said "Okay Anna, I'm just gonna have a look under your dress and see if the baby is crowning".

She did so and saw the head. "Oh my giddy aunt, okay. Anna little breaths"

Then Lieb came back with her equipment and she hurriedly put on her gloves.

Still speaking in Dutch she spoke to Anna "Okay Anna, push slowly. Good, good. Okay heads out, now pant, pant for me Anna" she said while holding the head, "Now push!". Anna pushed and out came a baby girl. Flo smiled as people around her cheered. But the baby wasn't crying, she quickly started rubbing it with towels, but it still wasn't crying even though it was trying to. She thought there must be mucus in the throat so she without thinking turned the baby upside down and asked the grandmother (she assumed) to cut the cord.

The baby slowly started clearing out their lungs and started crying at which everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

"dank u, dank u" the women started crying as Flo placed the baby on her chest.

Flo then grabbed the placenta and it looked okay. So she continued checking the mother and baby.

"We kunnen het nu overnemen, hoe kunnen we u ooit bedanken" (We can take over now, how can we ever thank you). Flo smiled and replied "Het is niet nodig, Anna is degene die lof verdient, ze was geweldig" (Theres no need, Anna is the one who deserves praise, she was amazing).

With that Flo went outside where Lieb and Perc had told everyone what had happened.

Her boys started clapping when she came outside and gathered around her.

"That was amazing Floss, how did you know what to do?" Perc said in awe.

"I didn't, but my mum had told me the basics of childbirth and the rest was good sense," she said with a tired smile.

"Okay little miss sunshine, I think its time you take care of someone else" Bill came over and dragged her.

"Who?" she said smiling

Bill just rolled his eyes and continued dragging her to the CP.

"Sir" he said as he walked in to Winters office where Lip, Luz, Buck and Nix were all sat with him.

"Yeah Guarnere, hey Fizz" Winters said with a grim line, whatever news he had just heard it was obviously bad.

"Sir, Fizz has just delivered a baby of a dutch woman, can she have a rest in the officers quaters as they are more private?" Bill asked.

Flo rolled her eyes "Bill i told you, i don't need special treatment" she sighed.

"Fizzy we just wanna take care of ya, Dick it's cool right?" Nix said,  he was a tad slurred which worried Flo.

"Yeah, of course, it's alright Fizz, have a good rest"  Winters gave a grim smile, but Flo hesitated. Her boys looked tired and worried, she should stay and help.

"I might go and check Gene's okay first, if i don't check i won't sleep" she reasoned.

Lip and Luz sighed while Buck said "Florence please just rest, we need you on top form". There was a firmness in his voice that made her nod and head upstairs.

When she was alone, she let the pain and exhaustion out. She took off her boots, jacket, helmet and webbing then fell into a deep sleep.

Flo was woken up 2 hours later to screaming and shouting outside.

She quickly popped her boots on, grabbed her satchel and ran outside without grabbing anything else.

When she got to the door of the house, Web and Gene held her back and wouldn't let her see. But she could hear a baby crying and a woman pleading.

"Gene please tell me that what i think is happening isn't happening" she pleaded with him, but he didn't/ couldn't answer her.

Web couldn't even make eye contact. She easily pushed past them and walked forward where she thought her eyes were deceiving her.  There was Anna trying to hold on to her baby, but the locals were pulling the baby and Anna away by her hair.

She noticed Winters, Nix and surprisingly Speirs with Thomas Knox who was the CO of Fox company, she ran over to them "Sir please tell me I can intervene, I don't mind taking the punishment"

All the officers looked at her with sorrow in their eyes, "I'm sorry Fizz, we can't upset the locals" Winters said sadly

She huffed, grabbed her hair and shouted "What is the point of being here if we don't help, they are like the Nazi's killing because of how people are born, it's not the baby's fault!".

"I know that Fizz, but we're in the army and the US army was told not to get involved with civilians," Nix said.

Flo turned round and looked at scenario, she wouldn't be able to forgive herslef, "Screw it" she muttered to herself.

"Stop it! I delivered this baby this morning, if you kill her, your no better than the Germans" she said firmly in dutch to the men as she pushed them away, they weren't expecting it and went toppling over.

They sat there in pain looking at her, she raised her eyebrows, then kneeled down to their height, "No one here will respect you for doing this. Your wives and children will be scared of you, you may feel it's justice. But this is an innocent woman who no doubt couldn't say no because she had a family to protect as well. There is no justice here, by all means help us defeat the Germans but don't take out your frustrations on innocents." She almost pleaded with them to stop.

All the men in Easy including Speirs and Knox were ready to jump in and save their young medic. But to their surprise they saw the men nod and stand up and walk away. As none of them spoke dutch they didn't have a clue as to what she had said but they were impressed she managed to diffuse the situation.

Flo went to Anna asked if she was okay and if Flo could do anything to help. Anna replied that flo had done enough and then she said "De naam van mijn dochters zal Florence zijn om haar te herinneren aan je vriendelijkheid en moed" (My daughters name will be Florence to remind her of your kindness and bravery). Flo looked humbled and she was. She didn't know what to say so she just said "I don't deserve it".

Anna then replied, "Because you don't believe you deserve it, it makes me certain you do"

With that the 2 women hugged each other, before Anna walked back to the house and Flo went back to face the officers.

Winters signed for her to follow him to his office,

"Good luck Floss" the boys whispered as she passed

When she arrived at the office Speirs and Knox were there as well.

"Got a reason you disobeyed orders Pvt Hilton?" Knox asked

"Well Sir, there's been and is enough death in this war already, i didn't think in a years time those men wanted an innocents death on their conscious" she spoke with confidence and the 3 who knew her smiled.

With her reply Knox left and as Flo raised her eyebrows and gave a small smile the other 3 relaxed.

"Flo, i know you didn't ask why but Ron here is gonna be a witness in case there is any backlash" Nix smiled.

Flo just smiled at Speirs, who gave her a small smile back as he leaned on the desk, "In my opinion Florrie you did nothing wrong, in fact, you should be rewarded in my eyes" he said.

"But, we know that's not how it works but no punishment required by my command and don't worry Fizz, we're all ready to back you if the Dutch and command make trouble" Winters added.

She smiled and saluted them all, then went out to the mess hall to relax in the company of her boys.
