Chapter 13

Betrayal

Dragons Rage

Flee Bottom

It was early in the morning when Daemion and Heleana decided to venture deep into the city. Heleana had asked Lynora if she would accompany them, but the Lannister lady insisted on watching the children.

"Here you go, little one." Heleana handed some food to orphans.

Daemion smiled as he watched his wife give food to orphans. Daemion himself gave food to people.

"Thank you, my prince." A man said.

"I'm always here to help." Daemion said.

"My prince!" Ser Erryk approached. "The queen has requested that you and Princess Heleana return to the castle with haste."

"Why?" Daemion asked.

"She did not say." Ser Erryk said.

Daemion sighed. "Very well. He gave more food and returned to the castle."

Small council chambers

Otto stood at his daughters side on the left, and Ser stood on the right.

"What is it that could not have waited an hour? Was Dorne invaded?" Ser Tyland asked, and lord Jasper smirked.

"The king is dead." Otto said. "We grieve for Viserys the peaceful... our sovereign. Our friend, but he has left us a gift. With his last breath, he impressed upon the queen his final wish, that his son Aegon... should succeed him as lord of the Seven Kingdoms."

Everyone was quiet, and then Tyland spoke up. "Then, we may now proceed with the full assurance of his blessing on our long-laid plans."

"Yes." Otto answered. "There is much to be done as we've previously discussed. The hand of the king sat down. Now, there are two among the captains of the City Watch that are loyal to Daemon. Let us replace them. Lord Lannister."

"The treasury is well in hand. The gold will be divided for safekeeping." Tyland said.

"Let ravens be sent to our allies, Riverrun and Highgarden." Otto said.

"Am I to understand that the small council have been plotting secretly to install my sin without me?" Alicent asked

"My queen, there was no need to sully you with darkling schemes." Jasper said.

"I will not have this." Lord Lyman Beesbury spoke up. "To hear that, you are plotting to replace the King's chosen heir with an imposter!"

"His firstborn son is hardly an imposter." Tyland spoke up. He knew his blood would inherit the Iron Throne now.

"Hundreds of lords and landed knights swore fealty to the princess." Lyman pointed out.

"That was some 20 years ago. Most of them now dead." Tyland spat.

"You heard the Hand. Plot or no, the king changed his mind." Jasper said.

Lyman rose from his chair. "I am 6 and 70 years old. I've known Viserys longer than any who sit at this table, and I will not believe that he said this on his deathbed, alone, with only the boy's mother as a witness. We all heard the king proclaim Daemion as Rhaenyras' heir as well. This is seizure! This is theft! It is treason! At the least it is-"

"Mind your tongue, Lyman." Grandmaester Orwyle tried to calm the master of coin down.

"The king was well last night by all accounts." Lyman didn't notice Ser Criston standing behind him. "Which of you can swear that he died of his own accord?"

"Which of is are you accusing of regicide, Lord Beesbury?" Jasper asked.

"Whether it was one of you or all of you, I care not. I will have no part -" Lord Lyman was cut off by Ser Criston.

"Sit down!" The Cole knight pushed Lord Lyman down to his seat so hard that his head hit the table into his marble, killing the master of coin.

Lord commander Harrold unsheathed his sword and walked closer to Ser Criston.

"Throw down your sword and remove your cloak, Ser Criston." Lord commander Harrold commanded. Ser Criston angrily unsheathed his sword and pointed it at Ser Harrold. "I am your lord commander, Ser Criston. Cast down your sword."

"I will not suffer insults to her grace, the queen." Ser Criston said.

"There was no insult to me, Ser Criston. Put aside your blade." Ser Criston said. The Cole knight puts his sword back in its sheathe.

"Has it come to this?" Lord commander Harrold asked.

"Lord commander, enough." Otto said. The lord commander then sheathed his sword.

"Let us have Lord Beesbury removed." Grandmaester Orwyle said.

"No." Otto spoke up. "The door remains shut until we finish our business."

"Storm's Rnd is of concern." Tyland spoke up. "We may not assume the loyalty of Lord Borros, but he has four daughters, all of them unmarried. The right proposal -" The master of ships was interrupted by Alicent.

"What of Rhaenyra?" Alicent asked.

"The former heir cannot, of course, be allowed to remain free and draw support to her claim." Otto said.

"You mean to imprison her?" Alicent asked.

"She and her family will be given the opportunity to publicly swear obeisance to the new king." Otto said.

"She'll never bend the knee. Nor will Daemon, which you know." Alicent said. "You plan to kill them. And all here accede to this?"

"Your father is correct, your grace." Orwyle spoke up. "A living challenger invites battle and bloodshed."

"It is unsavory, yes, a sacrifice we must make to secure Aegons succession. And then there is Daemion to consider. The king wouldn't wish for any unsavory -" Otto was interrupted by the queen.

"But the king did not wish for the murder of his daughter!" Alicent snapped. "He loved her. I will not have you deny this."

"And yet -" Jasper was interrupted by the queen as well.

"One more word, and I'll have you removed from this chamber and sent to the Wall!" Alicent yelled.

"What do you suggest, your grace?" Tyland asked.

"Time is of the essence." Otto sighed. "Lord commander Westerling. Take your knights to Dragonstone. Be quick and be clean."

The lord commander instantly removed his cloak. "I am Lord commander of the Kingsguard. I recognize no authority, but tye kings, and until there is one... I have no place here." Ser Harrold left the small council chambers.

"What of Daemion?" Alicent asked. :I've sent Ser Erryk to bring him and Heleana back to the castle, but we all know he won't bend the knee."

"Then he'll be executed." Otto said, and Ser Criston eyes widened.

"There could be another way." Alicent spoke up. "We have to make him submit."

"Very well, your grace." Otto said.

Lynoras chambers

"It is our fate, I think, to crave always what is given to another." Heleana told Lynora. "If one possesses something, another will take it away."

"Such is the way of the world." Lynora said.

The door opened, and Alicent entered the room with her father.

"Where is Aegon?" Alicent asked.

"Not here." Lynora replied.

"Has he been in his chambers?" Otto asked.

"I haven't seen him since last night." Lynora replied.

"Father -" Otto angrily left the room. Alicent looked at her grandchildren.

"Lylla. Take the children to their rooms." Lynora said, and the handmaiden took Jaehaerys, Jaehaera, and Daenerys and left the room.

"What's happened?" Heleana asked.

"Your father -" Heleana interrupted her mother.

"There is a beast beneath the boards." Heleana whispered.

"Oh, my dearest love." Alicent tried to comfort her daughter, but Heleana pushed her mother's hand away.

"What's wrong?" Lynora asked.

"The king is dead." Alicent replied.

Daemion and Heleanas chambers

While Heleana was talking to Lynora, Daemion decided to paint a portrait of his grandfather. He smiled as he finished, but his happiness was interrupted by the for being roughly opened by Ser Criston and 5 knights.

"What is the meaning of this?" Daemion asked.

"Prince Daemion Velaryon. You have been charged with treason and parricide." Ser Criston said.

"Parricide?" Daemion question, and then it clicked. His grandfather died. "No..." Daemions body went numb as he thought of all the times he spent with his grandfather. The moment the knight touched him, Daemion snapped out of it and punched him. He then kicked the second knight but was overpowered by the last three knights. They punched and kicked him as soon as he hit the ground.

"Enough." Ser Criston said, and the knights stopped. "Take him to the cells."

Balerions shrine

Ser Arryk met with Lynora in their secret place in the catacombs.

"Is it true? Is the king dead?" Lynora asked.

"Yes. The hand has asked my brother and I to find Aegon and bring him back to the castle." Ser Arryk said.

Lynora sighed. She slowly started to care about Aegon, but she couldn't ignore what he was.

The Lannister lady walked to Ser Arryk and kissed him.

"Please be safe and bring him back." Lynora said when she broke the kiss.

"I will." Ser Arryk left the catacombs.

Black cells

Daemion woke up in the black cells and saw Ser Criston and Queen Alicent.

"What... why am I here?" Daemion asked.

"My apologies for your treatment, my prince, but I had no other way to talk to you." Alicent said.

"I want to see my grandsire. Show me his body!" Daemion demanded.

"I will, after we talk." Alicent said.

"What do you want?" Daemion asked.

"Your grandsire wanted Aegon to be king." Alicent said. "With his last breath, he whispered to me that my son should be king." Daemion had a serious look on his face, and seconds later, he laughed. "It's the truth, Daemion."

"My mother isn't perfect, but my grandfather didn't change his mind. He had 20 years, and he stood by it all. Against my wishes, he even named me as my mother's heir." Daemion said.

"I swear by all the gods that he did." Alicent said. "He finally saw that the realm would never accept a woman as queen."

"Or you're finally feeling relieved that spreading your legs was worth it." Daemion spat. "Aegon isn't made to wear the crown."

"And you are?" Alicent asked.

"Doesn't matter. You've already planned to usurp the throne. How did you know my grandsire died?" Daemion asked.

"I was told by my handmaiden." Alicent replied.

"You weren't with him till the end?" Daemion scoffed. "Some wife you turned out to be. Where's Heleana?"

"She's safe, I assure you." Alicent replied. "I promise I'll let you see her and get you out of this cell."

"What do you want in return?" Daemion asked.

"Send a raven to Dragonstone asking your mother to bend the knee and swear obeisance to Aegon. Renounce your claim to the throne, and we can all live in peace." Alicent said.

"What happens if I don't?" Daemion inquired.

"You've been seen with your grandfather more times than anyone in the realm. You will be charged with the murder of the king." Alicent said.

"You fucking-" Daemion charged at the Queen, but was stopped when Ser Criston punched him. Daemion fell to the ground, and Ser Criston placed shackles on his wrists. "I'm going to kill you. Every single one of you!"

Alicent left the cells with her sworn protector.

Daemion and Heleanas chambers

Heleana walked into her room with the help of a handmaiden.

"What happened here?" Heleana asked as she sat down on her chair. The room was wrecked. Some of Daemions' paintings were destroyed, and she saw there were drops of blood on the floor. Just then, Alicent entered the room.

"Heleana. I was hoping you would still be with Lynora." Alicent said.

"She had to leave for some urgent business." Heleana said. "Where's Daemion?"

"Zara, leave us." Alicent told Heleanas handmaiden, and she left. The queen sat on the chair across from her daughter. "Your grandfather has done some investigations, and upon his findings, he's discovered that your husband is responsible for your father's murder."

Heleanas' eyes widened. Suddenly, she felt a small cramp in her stomach. "Ohhh!" She huffed. "No. Daemion wouldn't. He loved father."

"I'm sorry, Heleana." Alicent hated lying, but she needed her daughter to be separated from Daemion since he refused to bend the knee to Aegon.

"Oof!" Heleana felt another cramp.

"What's wrong?" Alicent asked.

Heleana lifted her dress up and felt something wet and sticky between her legs. She saw some fluid on her hand.

"The babe is coming." Heleana whispered.

Heleana was moved to the Birthing chambers, and she had her mother and Lynora at her side.

"You must push, princess." Grandmaester Orwyle urged.

"No! Where's Daemion?!" Heleana yelled. "Where is my husband?!"

"Heleana push!" Alicent begged.

"No!" Heleana yelled again. "Daemion!"

Black cells

Daemion paced back and forth in his cell. He kept thinking about Heleana and his daughter. He suddenly stopped when he had a strange feeling in his heart.

"Heleana..." Daemion knew his wife needed him. He then let loose a powerful and angry cry. Daemion then pulled at the bars or the cell repeatedly. "Let me out! Heleana needs me! Let me out!"

"Hands away from the bars!" The guard yelled at Daemion.

"Let me out, or I will feed you your own eyes!" Daemion said.

"Try it, boy." The guard challenged.

Daemion took a few steps back, and the guard opened the cell. Daemion rushed to the knight but was stopped when he felt a sting on his head. Another knight revealed himself, and both knights began to beat Daemion again.

"With any luck, that babe will die before it draws its first breath." The second knight smirked.

Daemion and Heleanas chambers

"Heleana, please." Lynora whispered. "The babe needs you. Daemion needs you. I need you."

Heleana nodded. She felt her husband beside her. Even though it was all in her head, the princess didn't care. The illusion of Daemion smiled at her, and she smiled back. "Guaaahhh!" Heleana started pushing. Huaaah! This continued for hours, and she finally felt something slip out of her.

"A boy, princess." Orwyle said.

"Praise the mother!" Zara said.

"Maelor... his name is Maelor." Heleana said. "Guah!" Heleana felt some discomfort.

"It seems there's another babe, princess." Orwyle said after handing Maelor to Zara.

"Tsssah!" Heleana screamed, and the second baby slipped out of her.

"A girl!" Orwyle announced.

"Maella... her name is Maella." Heleana breathlessly said. She saw Alicent holding Maelor and smiling at the babe. "Give... Maelor to Lynora and... Maella to Zara."

"I can hold him, daughter. It's no trouble at all." Alicent insisted.

"No... I don't want you in this room." Heleana said.

"Heleana-" The queen was surprised by the treatment she was receiving from her own daughter.

"Please... leave." Heleana sadly said.

Alicent held her tears back and handed Maelor to Lynora.

Black cells

Daemion woke up in pain and spat out some blood. He remembered the beating he received from the knights. He used his remaining strength to stand up.

"Heleana..." Daemion groaned as he took a step forward. He heard the cell door open, and when Daemion looked up, he was surprised to see the man who trained him. "Lord commander?"

"Not the Lord commander anymore. Come, my prince. We have to get you out of here. Ser Erryk is seeing to Princess Rhaenys." Ser Harrold said. The former lord commander put Daemions arm over his shoulder. Just as they left the black cells, the pair stopped when they saw Ser Criston and 10 knights.

"By order of King Aegon Targaryen, the second of his name, I, Ser Criston, Lord commander of the Kingsguard, place you under arrest, Ser Harrold, for aiding a prisoner." Ser Criston said. "Surrender or die."

Ser Harrold looked at Daemion, who was too weak to fight. "Whatever happens, I need you to be strong, lad. Keep on fighting." Ser Harrold gently placed Daemion against a wall and sat him down. He then unsheathed his sword and faced the knights. They engaged, and Ser Harrold managed to kill half of them on his own. One knight stabbed Ser Harrold in his back, but Ser Harrold killed him. Another knight stabbed Ser Harrold in his leg. The veteran knight fell to his knee but managed to kill the knight.

"Stop it!" Daemion begged.

Ser Criston joined the fight and managed to stabb a weakened Ser Harrold in his chest. When Ser Criston pulled his sword out of the former lord commanders chest, Ser looked to Daemion and slowly crawled to him. Daemion tried to reach out to Ser Harrold but was stopped when a knight kicked Daemion in his face.

"I'm sorry, son." Ser Harrold said, and nothing could prepare Daemion for what he witnessed. Ser Criston pulled Ser Harrold up only to slit his throat in front of Daemion.

"No! No! Ser Harrold! No!" Daemion yelled and cried for the man whom he saw as a father figure. The man who trained him and treated him like a person and not a bastard. Daemion kept looking back at a dead Ser Harrold as he was dragged away to his cell.

A few hours after, Daemion was still saddened by the loss of Ser Harrold. He risked everything to try and save Daemion, but the young Velaryon prince blamed himself for it all.

"Nephew." Daemion saw Aegon approach the cell gate.

"What do you want?" Daemion asked.

"To look in on how you are." Aegon replied.

"After your idiot lord commander killed the most honorable knight in the realm, and being refused to see my wife after she gave birth, how do you think I am?" Daemion inquired.

"How did you know Heleana went into labor?" Aegon asked.

"I don't know... I felt it. I felt her pain." Daemion said.

"Then forgive me because I have something to share with you. Heleana is well, but the babes died upon their delivery." Aegon lied.

"No. No!" Daemion yelled. He rushed to the gate and grabbed Aegon by his collar. He slammed Aegons head against the cell bar twice before a knight beat Daemion with a staff against his head. Daemion fell back. "Let me see her. Let me see Heleana and my daughter."

"I was more than willing, but now you will rot in here." Aegon spat as he wiped the blood from his face. The young king then left the cells.

Daemion laid on the cold floor and wept at the thought of his wife going through a stillbirth alone.

"My prince." A prisoner in the opposite cell whispered. "We are at your service."
