Chapter 49
Mr. Sallow's Sinful Wife by Maisie Chasey
Chapter 49 Who Would Nicholas Choose?
Even though she knew that he didnât choose her out of love, Nancyâs heart couldnât help but beat faster and faster.
Thank you, Nicholas. Thank you for your decisiveness.
And thank you for not hesitating!
Possibly due to her pregnancy, Nancy kept dozing off occasionally on the way back.
With one arm extended, Nicholas pulled her head onto his chest and said, âIf youâre tired, just nap.â
âOkay.â
Nancy snuggled into his arms obediently and closed her eyes.
She might seem calm.
But only she knew that she had been panicked for a long time.
She wondered if she had made the right or wrong decision today.
She also wondered if he really could let go of Madelline.
But like she told Linda, she wanted to try this one last time for the sake of their baby.
âOh, Nicholas. Iâve given you everything I have, and I hope you wonât let me lose the bet. In her heart, she said silently..
Nancy knew that Madelline definitely couldnât sit still.
She guessed that Madelline would come up to her.
But she didnât expect it to be that soon.
âNancy, letâs meet up!â Madelline came straight to the point when she called her.
âIf youâre trying to persuade me for a divorce, then thereâs no need. Nicholas has clarified it to you, and I donât need to repeat myself.
âYouâre wrong. I meant nothing more than asking you out for tea.â
Madelineâs response did indeed come as a surprise to Nancy.
1/5 âIâm busy.â Nancy firmly declined.
âIâll be at the same coffee shop as last time. If you donât come, Iâll come to find you. You can decide.â
Nancy was speechless. She changed her clothes, then took a taxi to the coffee shop.
When she arrived, Madelline had already ordered coffee.
She sipped her coffee, smiling gently, unlike a woman who had lost in love. Instead, her face was radiant, and her smile was enchanting.
At the moment, Nancy couldnât figure out exactly what she was trying to do, so she remained vigilant.
Just as she sat down, Madelline handed her an envelope.
âOpen it and take a look,â she said with a smile.
Nancyâs fingers gripped the envelope, its material feeling firm and familiar in her hand.
She had already guessed that there should be some photos inside.
If she guessed correctly, they must be photos of when Madelline and Nicholas were together.
Although she had known and heard from others for a long time that they had been in a sweet and loving relationship.
But she didnât see it with her own eyes.
When everything was captured in images, vividly displayed in front of Nancy, it was a different matter.
She admitted she wasnât composed.
She felt distressed and jealous.
But she couldnât give up and certainly couldnât let Madelline see her fear.
She tilted her head back, gave a faint smile, and then pushed the envelope in front of Madelline. âNo need, Iâve already guessed whatâs inside.â
âSince youâve guessed it, why donât you dare to open it, Nancy? Youâre afraid, Madelline stared directly into her eyes and said with conviction.
âThatâs nonsense! Why would I be afraid?â
âSince youâre not afraid, then open it, Nancy. Let me see your courage.â
2/5 Nancy admitted she was provoked.
And suddenly, she had a mad desire to look at those photos.
She wanted to see how they had once loved each other, how deep their love had been, and why Nicholas had always remembered her.
âAlright, Iâll open it.â
Taking a deep breath, Nancy steadied her trembling hands, tore open the envelope, and poured the photos inside.
There were many photos piled up thickly.
As she emptied the envelope, the photos scattered all over the place. Looking down, she saw those images of Madelline and Nicholas together.
Back then, they both looked young. They were in their school uniforms.
There were two of them standing side by side.
Some were looking at each other with gentle smiles.
There were two of them sitting together reading books in the library.
There was even a scene where Madelline stood on tiptoes to kiss Nicholas under the sunlight.
They had so many past moments, so much love between them.
âIf itâs not enough, I have plenty more at home.â
âNancy, you know why Nicholas didnât divorce you, right? I know you feel triumphant now, but does that matter? Does he love you? Can a marriage without love be happy?â
âNo matter how much Nicholas rejects me, I will always be in his heart. He canât abandon me.â
Nancy was just a little short of being completely crushed by these words from Madelline.
She was despondent and felt miserable.
She was upset that she couldnât be a part of his youth and younger days.
She was upset that his lover and his past belonged to someone else.
But she had to be rational, hadnât she?
No one can regret their youth, and thereâs no such thing as a regret medicine in the world.
3/5 Taking a deep breath, Nancy looked at Madelline again with clear, determined eyes. âEven if everything youâve said is true, so what? Itâs all in the past, Madelline. Youâve already lost him.â
âNow, heâs my husband, and Iâm his wife. Knowing just that is enough for me.â
âIs that so?â Madelline sneered. âNancy, do you dare to make a bet with me?â
âHow do you want to bet?â
As if possessed, Nancy agreed.
Upon hearing her acceptance, a confident smile curled up on the corner of Madellineâs lips.
âCall Nicholas now and ask him to come. In five minutes, weâll know the answer.â
âGoodâ
Nancy did as she was told. She sent a message to Nicholas.
Nicholas responded quickly, âOkay,â
At this point, Madelline waved and called a waiter. âBring me a knife, please.â
After receiving the knife, Madelline didnât hesitate for a moment. She made a quick cut on her hand.
Instantly, her hand was bleeding profusely.
Quickly, blood covered the entirety of her hand.
Then she handed the knife to Nancy. âCut yourself. Iâd like to see if Nicholas will take you to the hospital or me.â
Nancy took the knife, and it was almost close to the point where she might have cut her wrist with.
the knife.
She admitted that she was tempted and wanted to find out, too, She didnât ask for much. Even just a tiny bit of caring would be enough.
However, when the cold blade was about to touch her skin, she suddenly snapped out of it.
She dropped the knife and looked at Madelline coldly. âI wonât play these childish games with you. If you want to play, do it on your own.â
âPilt... Madelline sneered, âNancy, youâre afraid and hesitant in the end. How did you dare to say you love him?â
4/5 âI love him but wonât resort to self-harm to gain his sympathy. Pity is not love.â
Madelline laughed at Nancy for being naive. âIf a man doesnât even sympathize with a woman, how can there be love?â
At this moment, Nicholas walked into the coffee shop with determined steps.
Madelline glanced at Nancy. âHeâs here. You would lose. Just wait and see.â
She felt like every step Nicholas was treading on her heart-nervous, anxious, even fearful.
Nancyâs heart was beating fast.
