Chapter 476: Clash of Swords
Water Magician
Editor: Tseirp
Clash of swords.
A battle between swordsmen.
The blue man had a height and build almost identical to Abelâs.
His sword was also about the same size as Abelâs magic sword.
âSwordsman, youâre wielding an interesting sword.â
âBlue man, people usually have names, you know.â
Abel responded to the blue manâs provocative words with words that were purely provocative themselves.
âIs that so? I didnât know that. So, swordsman, whatâs your name?â
âIs that so? Didnât know that either, huh? Well, hereâs another thing you might not know: when you ask someone their name, youâre supposed to give yours first.â
âI didnât know that either. My name is Lau.â
ââ¦Youâre surprisingly straightforward.â
The blue man, Lau, answered honestly with a laugh, but Abel still didnât give his name.
âIf youâre not going to tell me, thatâs fine. Iâll just call you the descendant of Richard.â
For a moment, Abel was at a loss for words upon hearing Lauâs comment, spoken with a grin.
Though at a loss for words, his sword and body kept moving.
Both were in the midst of their sword fight.
âHow do you know about King Richardâ¦?â
âHim? Well, thatâs because I fought him a long time ago.â
âSeriously⦠between djinns and ghost ships, how far did my ancestors roam?â
âHmm? I donât think it was a ghost ship back then⦠but whatever.â
Lauâs final words were too quiet for Abel to hear.
âSo, why do you think Iâm Richardâs descendant?â
âWell, itâs obvious, isnât it? That sword of yours.â
âThis?â
Abel was confused by Lauâs remark.
Abelâs magic sword was glowing red as usual⦠but it wasnât some legendary sword passed down from king to king.
Technically, it had been one of the swords lying dormant in the royal treasury, and he had just picked it up when he became an adventurer.
He had indeed been drawn to it in the treasury, butâ¦
âI just picked it up because it was lying around.â
â âExâ was just lying around? The worldâs full of mysteries.â
Abel, rather honestly, explained.
Lau tilted his head in confusion.
âWell, no matter. Capturing a descendant of Richard would still be quite the prize.â
âTry it if you can!â
Abelâs sword skills had dulled during his three years of royal duties.
Of course, he practiced whenever he found time, and he occasionally engaged in mock battles, but it wasnât the same as the life-or-death stakes of his adventuring days.
There was no sense of danger.
Naturally, he became rusty.
But since returning to the battlefield, he had fought and defeated Orenj, a minion of the djinn, and then been thrust into the Archipelago region, where he stormed enemy ships and seized their flagship.
His senses had sharpened.
He had gained new insights through experiences unlike any he had had before.
Heâd encountered new sword techniques, knife skills, and all sorts of combat methods.
These experiences had pushed Abel to a new level, beyond even his adventuring days.
Abel himself hadnât realized it.
He simply felt his body moved better than he expected.
Ryo, however, had noticed Abelâs growth.
While wielding his sword on the deck of the Lone Dark as usual, Ryo had been certain of it.
As a magician who also wielded a sword.
Ryo had long observed Abelâs swordsmanship.
Thatâs why he had noticed.
Though, he hadnât told Abel.
There wasnât really a need to go out of his way to mention it.
If this had been before the Djinn War, Abel likely wouldnât have been able to defeat Lau.
It might have been decided in about ten strikes.
But nowâ¦
âUghâ¦youâre strong, descendant!â
âWhatâs with calling me descendant? Thatâs too vague. My nameâs Abel. Remember it.â
Three thrusts followed by a sweeping slash.
Abelâs sword aimed for Lauâs neck.
Clang!
But of course, Lau wasnât easily defeated.
He deflected Abelâs slash, and the roles of attacker and defender switched.
The two swordsmenâs battle grew fiercer with each exchange of attack and defense.
A short distance from this swordsmenâs duel, another pair were engaged in their own clash of swords.
âI will make you and that swordsman my eternal captives.â
âI refuse.â
âYou seem strong enough. I might even make you a royal guard.â
âUh, are you even listening to me?â
The conversation between the blue woman and Ryo was completely disjointed.
âBefore making you my eternal captive, I suppose I should ask for your name. I am Fan, your future master. Thatâs the name of yours truly. Now, whatâs your name?â
âUm, Fan, Iâm not planning to be anyoneâs captiveâ¦â
âYour name is âCaptive-sanâ? Thatâs an unusual name.â
âNo, no. Itâs Ryo. My name is Ryo.â
âRyo⦠A nice name.â
âT-thanks, I guess?â
Fan suddenly smiled and complimented Ryoâs name. Catching him off guard as he said âthank youâ.
Despite their strange conversation, their sword fight was intense.
Fan attacked, and Ryo defended.
Occasionally, Ryo countered, but Fan skillfully evaded his strikes.
To Ryo, this was a familiar pattern.
During this exchange, he analyzed her swordsmanship.
Naturally, Ryoâs defense was flawless.
So, even though he was on the defensive, it wasnât a problem.
Or at least, it shouldnât have beenâ¦
âHmmâ¦â
Despite his best efforts, Ryo found himself with minor cuts.
He was certain he had dodged every strike.
Was it magic?n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
But the cuts appeared on his body through his Fairy Kingâs Robe.
The robe had a self-repair function, quickly restoring any damage, butâ¦Ryoâs body didnât have that luxury.
âThis is strangeâ¦â
Ryo muttered, and it seemed Fan heard him, as she spoke.
âYour Fairy Kingâs Water Robe canât block my attacks.â
âWhatâ¦?â
Ryo was shocked that Fan knew about his robe, but even more so by the fact that it couldnât block her attacks.
Two layers of surprise.
âCould you tell me why it canât block them?â
âIâll tell you if you become my royal guard.â
âIâll have to decline.â
Ryo politely refused Fanâs offer.
âWhy do you refuse? Youâll be freed from all suffering.â
âThe royal guards are skeletons too, right?â
âYes, thatâs right.â
âThen I must decline.â
âWhy?â
âBecause skeletons canât eat cake!â
Ryo scowled as he answered.
Wasnât it obvious?
âWhat is cake?â
Fan didnât know what cake was.
âIf you didnât know, I suppose it canât be helpedâ¦â
Ryo looked at Fan with pity, as if seeing someone truly unfortunate.
Then, he returned his thoughts to the battle.
He was taking damage that he couldnât see.
In that case, he should equip .
He had been thinking that since the beginning of the fight.
Howeverâ¦
He had a bad feeling about it.
He wasnât sure why, but it felt like using would be a bad move.
Ryo believed that his brain was subconsciously warning him, based on all the knowledge and experience he had accumulated.
âItâs kind of a bad feelingâ, or âIt doesnât feel rightâ.
Those werenât just whims.
They were genuinely âbadâ and ânoâ.
Even if he couldnât explain them to others logically.
Of course, it didnât mean that he was always right.
That was natural.
Humans arenât capable of being right 100% of the time.
Even when the âbad feelingâ comes from logical thinking, itâs not always correct.
Still, when working with others⦠such vague feelings like âthis doesnât feel rightâ could cause problemsâ¦
âI wish I knew why I feel this wayâ¦â
Ryo muttered to himself.
He was amid an intense swordfight with Fan, skillfully defending, though he was accumulating small cuts here and there.
âEarlier, Fan said, âThe Water Fairy Kingâs robe canât block my attacksâ.â
Of course, it could be a lie.
There was no guarantee that the enemy would be truthful in a fight.
But whatever decisions were made, the first step was to consider the information at hand.
âThe Waterâ¦Fairy Kingâs robeâ¦?â
There had been others before who recognized Ryoâs robe as the âFairy Kingâs robeâ at a glance.
Akuma Leonor, Sera, Obaba-sama of the Western Forest, the Djinn Garwin⦠none of them were humanâ¦
But not one of them had ever called it the âWater Fairy Kingâsâ robe.
They just referred to it as the âFairy Kingâs robeâ, without specifying âWaterâ.
Could that be a clue?
Ryo looked at the blue, glowing woman in front of him â Fanâ¦
âBlue? Water? Could it be⦠some sort of water-attribute monster?â
Ryoâs words slipped out of his mouth.
They werenât loud, but the opponent was right in front of him.
Naturally, she heard.
âYes, thatâs more or less correct.â
Fan said, nodding repeatedly.
With that, Ryo understood everything.
It was the first time he had encountered a water-attribute monster outside of the sea, like the Kraken or Bait Ball.
He had never heard of such a creature before.
But without a doubt, Fan had been wielding water-attribute magic far longer than he had.
In other words, Fan surpassed him in controlling water-attribute magic.
If Ryo used water-attribute magic, there was a chance she could seize control of itâ¦
If he had created and donned it⦠and Fan had taken control of the spell
Only death awaited him.
Ryo shuddered.
He wanted to commend himself for trusting his âbad feelingâ and not using .
At the same time, he reached a single conclusion.
(This fight⦠I canât use magicâ¦)
For a swordsman, not being able to use magic wouldnât be a problem.
Thatâs why Abel wasnât troubled.
He was worried about something else.
âSo, your name is Lau. Youâre strong.â
Indeed, the blue man named Lau was strong.
He was about the same size as Abel, wielded a similar sword, and while their sword techniques differed greatly⦠there were many similarities, which made Lauâs strength easy to feel.
âHahaha, Abel, youâre interesting. Most people either bluff or lose the will to fight. But you⦠you have a strong heart. It seems youâve fought some formidable foes before.â
âYeah. Iâve fought plenty of legendary and formidable opponents, including you.â
Lau laughed as he spoke, and Abel gave a wry smile in response.
Indeed, Abel thought.
It wasnât always like this.
He had fought strong foes in the past, but at least they were human.
Or at least, ordinary monsters.
But after a certain point, things changed.
It all started after he washed ashore in the Rondo Forest and met that water-attribute magicianâ¦
âLife was peaceful before thenâ¦â
Abel muttered to himself.
âLike hell it was!â
For some reason, the blue man in front of him denied it.
âOnce âExâ chose you, peace was no longer an option.â
âWait a second, you donât know anything about my situation, Lau. You have no idea.â
âYeah, I donât know anything about your personal circumstances. But I do know that as long as you wield âExâ, peace will never be possible. Thatâs just the kind of sword it is.â
âThatâs⦠unsettlingâ¦â
Abel reflexively glanced at the red sword he wielded.
âIsnât it fine? In the end, strength is what matters. The strong dictate the terms. And people follow because they know theyâll survive. Itâs not about being right, itâs about survival. If you donât prove yourself with actions, no one will follow you. Who cares about logic? Actions speak louder than words, donât they?â
ââ¦You sound awfully human for a monster.â
âYou fool, weâve been around long before humans. Itâs humans who copied us. Abel, Iâm lenient, so Iâll let that slide, but to others, that kind of talk could get you killed.â
âI see⦠my bad. I guess thinking in human terms is a bad habit of mine.â
âBeing able to apologize honestly is a good thing.â
Abel was being lectured by a monster.
Though, was Lau really a âmonsterâ⦠he glowed blue, so at the very least, he wasnât an ordinary human.
(Having existed longer than humansâ¦? Itâs a ghost âshipâ, right? But werenât ships made by humans?)
As Abel unconsciously swings his sword, these thoughts run through his mind.
However, he could understand that the entity possessed a deep intelligence.
Of course, it also gave off the impression of being a battle maniac.
At that moment, Lau leaped backward, creating distance.
Abel didnât pursue but observed.
He had somewhat grasped Lauâs sword techniques, but the full extent of Lauâs strength was still unclear.
It was too terrifying to chase such an opponent.
If it was a trap, heâd be finished instantly.
âHmm, your judgment isnât bad. Abel, youâre quite intriguing.â
âWhy, thank you.â
âAlright, Iâm taking it up a notch. Try to keep up!â
The moment Lau said this, he disappeared.
Clang.
âUghâ¦â
Abel let out a muffled groan.
Lau had disappeared and then jumped high into the air, striking down from above.
From a height no human could reach.
(Heâs finally showing his true, non-human nature⦠No, this isnât the time to be thinking about that. Thereâs no room for idle thoughts.)
Thinking that, Abel exhaled a short breath.
With that one breath, he cleared his mind of unnecessary thoughts.
âHohâ¦â
A voice of admiration escaped Lauâs lips.
Lau realized that Abel had focused entirely on the battle before him with just one breath.
Lau had crossed swords with many swordsmen over the years.
The sword is a fascinating weapon. Despite minor differences, similar weapons exist all over the world.
Throughout all eras.
This means that, for bipedal creatures standing about two meters tall, itâs the most suitable weapon.
Among all the swordsmen he had fought, the one before himâAbelâwas undoubtedly first-rate.
âThe question is⦠are you truly elite!â
Lau slashed as he leaped backward.
Abel also jumped back, dodging it.
The two maintained their distance⦠but it wasnât a reset.
Using the momentum of his backward leap, Lau closed the gap in an instant.
Simultaneously, he thrust.
Slashed. A downward diagonal slash, then upward. Another thrustâ¦
He moved in a clockwise direction, chaining techniques as he circled around Abel.
Lauâs sword speed was now incomparable to before.
But Abel calmly received each attack.
Lau had told him to âtry and keep upâ, so Abel had anticipated a scenario where he would be on the defensive.
Even though Abel was told to âkeep upâ, that didnât mean he would block Lauâs strikes head-on.
As the speed increased, so did the power.
Taking it head-on would beâ¦
If it were a human opponent, it would be fine.
Even someone like Warren with his monstrous strength, one could estimate the impact.
However, Abel had faced beings literally beyond human, like the demon prince or minions of a djinn.
Their swords were dangerous to block directly, even when defending.
Abelâs magic sword wouldnât break.
But Abelâs own body wouldnât hold up.
Lauâs sword likely required the same kind of handling.
Thus, Abel deflected before the swordâs full momentum built up, diverting its force⦠not letting Lau fully extend his arm.
At first, he thought through this approach. It had a slight roughness to it.
However, as time passed, his movements became more refined.
Deflect.
Redirect.
Donât let him extend.
With the sword movements, Abelâs body movements became even more polished.
The movements of his arms.
His legs.
His torso.
All of them flowed as one.
His sight.
His hearing.
His sense of touch.
All became one unified sensation.
Abelâs body was now moving unconsciously.
His thoughts had already ceased.
Abelâs entire being wasâ¦immersed in nothingness.
A state of selflessness.
At that moment, Abel narrowly dodged Lauâs thrust, letting it graze his leather armor.
And then he plunged his glowing red sword into Lauâs chest.
âUghâ¦â
A groan escaped Lauâs mouth.
Abel withdrew his sword, spun his body, and in one motion, severed Lauâs head.
âPhewâ¦â
Abel breathed heavily.
Even in one breath, he couldnât calm his excitement or steady his breathing.
From past experience, he knew just stabbing Lau in the chest wouldnât be enough, so he made sure to also decapitate him.
Neither the stab to the chest nor the decapitation gave him the sense of breaking a magic core.
Of course, there are monsters without magic cores, so he couldnât say for sureâ¦
Abel kept his guard up, watching Lau intently.
At the same time, he finally had enough composure to pay attention to the other battle.
With just a glance, he could see that Ryoâs face had several cuts.
Ryo, known for his impenetrable defense.
âRyo!â
Abel shouted instinctively.
âIâm fine! Just scratches!â
Ryo responded without looking at Abel.
Still amid the sword fightâ¦
âItâs over on that side.â
âItâs rare for Lau to lose.â
Ryo commented, and Fan replied.
There was no sadness or frustration in Fanâs voice, no negative emotions at all.
She didnât seem happy either.
Rather, it was as if she was simply stating a fact.
But Ryo didnât care about that.
He had received the crucial information he needed.
Ryo took a backward step to create some distance.
Fan quickly rushed forward.
Not giving him the chance to reset the fight.
Which made her predictable.
For just a brief moment.
Truly just an instant.
Water danced.
Almost simultaneously, Fanâs head was sliced off.
âImpressive!â
Abel praised.
Ryo nodded once in acknowledgment.
Then took three deep breaths.
He had calmed down.
After checking his own calmness and surveying his surroundings, Ryo took a potion from his pocket and downed it.
Though he had left his usual bag in the captainâs quarters of the Lone Dark, he had brought his homemade potion along.
Since it was stored in Ryoâs ice container, it wouldnât break from a battle.
As Abel approached Ryo, he noticed that Ryo had left the blade of Murasame drawn.
Abel, too, was holding his beloved sword unsheathed.
âRyo, what do you think?â
âHonestly, Iâm not sure. I saw Abel cut off the other guyâs head and heard her say that âLau lostâ, so I cut off her head too⦠But whether they are the rulers of this ghost ship is still unclear.â
At that moment, Ryo stiffened in shock.
Abel immediately looked in the same direction as Ryo.
There⦠stood two headless corpses, rising to their feet.
Simultaneously, they picked up their rolling heads.
And placed them back on their necks.
âI must say, Iâm impressed! I never expected Abelâs sword to be that strong.â
âRyo won. I admit defeat.â
Lau, the blue man said, and Fan, the blue woman added. Both praising them.
âLeonor and these people⦠itâs totally unfair that they donât die even when you cut off their heads.â
âYeah⦠I completely get that.â
Ryo lamented, shaking his head repeatedly, and Abel agreed, nodding.
At the same time, a rattling sound echoed as something rose from below.
It was the skeletons that had boarded the large ship.
Since Lau and Fan had admitted defeat, the skeletons seemed to be withdrawing.
âDo you two want to come with us?â
âWeâd be happy to have you.â
âWeâll pass.â
âWe respectfully decline.â
Fan asked, and Lau added. Abel and Ryo both replied, turning them down.
âYou could even become the captain of the guards.â
âAnd you can keep wearing that leather armor and robe.â
âBut weâd still be skeletons, right?â
âYes, weâll politely decline again.â
Fan and Lau proposed, and Abel and Ryo declined again.
Lau and Fan exchanged glances and nodded at each other.
âAbel was strong.â
âRyo was strong too.â
âThese âbodiesâ were too weak to fight against them.â
âSomeday, Iâd like to fight you with my real body.â
Hearing this conversation, Ryo and Abel were puzzled.
âAbel, they said something about their real body.â
âLetâs just pretend we didnât hear that.â
And so, they pretended not to hear it.
âAh, Fan, can I ask you something?â
âWhat is it? Have you changed your mind about becoming a guard? If you want, I can make an exception for you and give you blue bones instead of white ones.â
âNo, Iâll have to refuse that offer. I am a little curious about the blue bones, but⦠no, I donât want to become a skeleton.â
Ryo quickly corrected himself, seeing Fan move as if preparing to do something.
âI believe both of you control water-attribute magic.â
âYeah, I wonât go into detail, but thatâs pretty much correct.â
âThen, Iâd like you to try and take control of something Iâve created with my magic.â
âTake control of your magic?â
Ryo chanted.
ââ
An ice wall appeared beside the two of them.
âHmm, thatâs quite an interesting spell. Did you learn it from the Water Fairy King?â
âNo, I didnât learn magic from him.â
âReally? But youâve got a robe, a sword⦠even boots from him?â
âYes. My master only taught me swordsmanship.â
ââ¦Heâs still as weird as ever, I see. So, what do you want me to do with this wall?â
âCan you move it, Fan?â
Since the ice wall was created by Ryoâs magic, no one else should be able to move itâ¦
But the ice wall lifted into the air and floated.
âLike this?â
âAh, as I thoughtâ¦â
Fan asked, and Ryo sighed in frustration.
âSo, when you talk about magic control, this is what you meant. Yes, I can take control of it.â
âThank you very much.â
Ryo said, bowing politely as Fan made the ice wall vanish.
Since Fan had taken control of the magic, the ice wall was no longer Ryoâs but Fanâs.
âI have a question too.â
Abel said with a stern expression.
âHmm? What is it?â
Lau asked, still smiling.
âWhy do you attack human ships? And why do you kill the crew?â
âWe attack human ships to replenish our crew. And to be precise, we donât kill them. We capture them.â
âCapture? You turn them into skeletons, donât you?â
âYes, we do.â
âSo you kill them and turn them into skeletons?â
âThatâs a misunderstanding.â
Lau shrugged in response to Abelâs remark.
âLau, I donât think humans fully understand skeletons yet.â
âOh? Ah, I see. So thatâs why they reject being captured.â
Lau nodded in agreement with Fanâs point.
âHave you ever wondered why most of the beings humans call âmonstersâ have magic stones, but skeletons and wraiths donât?â
âThe energy that keeps them movingâ¦where does it come from?â
Ryo replied, answering the question with a question.
âEnergy⦠thatâs a nostalgic word. So, Ryo, youâre that kind of personâ¦â
Lau murmured, looking at Ryo with nostalgic eyes.
âUh, wellâ¦â
âNo, donât worry about it. Just something on my end. Well, itâs as Ryo pointed out. Skeletons donât eat, they donât drink water, they donât take anything from those they kill⦠Yet they can still move. And, of course, itâs not like theyâre getting energy from magic stones like alchemy.â
âYeah, that is pretty strange.â
âThe truth is, skeletons are a little different from what humans call âdeathâ.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThatâs all I can tell you.â
âEh~!â
Ryo protested.
After saying so much, to stop the conversation there was frustratingâ¦
âWell, since weâve lost to you two, we wonât take the crew from the first ship. Weâve healed the ones who were seriously injured, so I hope thatâs enough.â
âI seeâ¦â
Lau apologized, and Abel reluctantly accepted Lauâs apology, though he still seemed dissatisfied.
âAlthough, we didnât actually kill them⦠itâs more like a transfer of allegiance, or just abduction.â
âEven abduction is frowned upon among humans.â
ââ¦Humans are so complicated.â
Fan and Lauâs unsettling conversation continued, but Ryo chose not to say anything.
In this world called âPhiâ, humans were the weak ones.
The weak being hunted by the strong is a law of nature.
In that regard, there is no distinction between humans, animals, or monsters.
In a sense, thereâs a surprising level of equality.
The strong survive, while the weak are hunted.
Just as humans on Earth hunt animals and gather plants for sustenance.
âPhiâ has its own unique version of this process⦠and thatâs all there is to it.
Of course, Ryo didnât want to be hunted, so he made efforts not to be.
âWell then. Until we meet again.â
âYou can always join the guard.â
With that, the ghost ship Ruri carrying Lau and Fan disappeared.
Into the clouds, just as it had arrived.
âThat was a complete defeat.â
âHuh?â
âOr rather, it wasnât even a proper fight to begin with.â
âBut you did cut off the head of your opponent, right?â
âI won with the sword but lost with magic.â
Ryo shook his head in frustration, clearly disappointed.
âOh, that ice wall thing?â
âYeah, I didnât use magic at first because I had a bad feeling, and that decision was correct. But stillâ¦I need to get stronger!â
âUh, sure.â
âLately, Iâve been too caught up with alchemy and havenât been practicing magic control as much. I need to train more.â
âYour magic control training. You mean building ice towers and making ice cakes, rightâ¦?â
âExactly. But I shouldnât get in the way of the crew, so Iâll do it in midair.â
âHuh?â
âThe ship will be moving the whole time. So Iâll have to move the structures while constructing themâ¦hehe, this sounds like a real challenge.â
Ryo smiled with excitement at the thought of his grueling new training regimen.
While Abel stood beside him, dumbfounded.
Then Abel murmured.
âGuess I should start swinging my sword harder than ever too.â
