Chapter 6
Forbidden Bonds
Skye
The next morning, Skye wakes up and walks downstairs to eat breakfast. Her two boys are already eating their breakfast at the table. âMama!â Gray says.
âAre you feeling better, mama?â Theo asks.
âYâ¦yes, a little bit,â she answers. She turns to the housekeeper and greets her. âGâ¦good morning.â
âGood morning, miss,â Alcie answers.
Skye sits down and begins to pick at her breakfast. She manages a few bites before pushing the plate away.âI hâ¦have a dâ¦doctorâs aâ¦appointment soon. Will yâ¦you wâ¦watch the bâ¦boys?â
âOf course, miss.â
âSâ¦Skye, mâ¦my nâ¦name is Sâ¦Skye, not mâ¦miss.â Alice looks uncertain. âPâ¦please, Iâm nâ¦not câ¦comfort wâ¦withâ¦â
âAlright, Skye it is.â
âIâll be back in a few hours.â
Alice gives her a worried look. âBe safe, Skye.â
âI will.â Skye leaves the house and walks to the bus stop. Skye begins to feel nauseous on the way to the hospital. Eventually, the bus drops her off about a block away from the hospital. She walks the rest of the way. By the time sheâs there sheâs pale and out of breath. She quickly tells the receptionist that she has an appointment with Dr. Graylen then sits down in the lobby.
A few minutes later, Dr. Graylen comes out. âSkye?â she calls out, âAre you here?â
âIâm hâ¦here,â Skye replies weakly.
âOh dear, you donât look well at all. Are you able to stand?â
âI dâ¦donât kâ¦know. I dâ¦donât fâ¦feel gâ¦good.â
Dr. Graylen bends down and gently lifts the young teenager up. Skye seems startled at first, but eventually relaxes. âThatâs it, relax,â Dr. Graylen encourages her, while gently putting her on an examination table.
A nurse comes into the room and draws her blood. âDoctor?â Skye mumbles.
âWhat is it, sweetheart?â
âWâ¦whatâs wâ¦wrong with mâ¦me?â
âThatâs what youâre here to find out. Now, letâs get a look at your baby. Lift your shirt up please.â
Skye doesnât argue and lifts her shirt up. Dr. Graylen squirts some gel onto Skyeâs stomach and then uses a probe to gently look around. âWâ¦what are y..you dâ¦doing?â Skye whispers.
âIâm doing an ultrasound,â Dr. Graylen answers, âYouâll be able to see your baby.â
âTâ¦thatâs possible?â
âYes, look. It looks like youâre about 12 weeks pregnant.â
Skye looks at the machine that Dr. Graylen is using. She looks back up at her doctor. âI dâ¦donât understand.â
Dr. Graylen begins to point out the babyâs parts. âAnd this isâ¦wait a minute.â
Skye looks up at her doctor and asks, âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing serious, give me a minute.â Skye continues to look up at Dr. Graylen with a frightened look on her face.
âTwins,â Dr. Graylen finally whispers, âyouâre having twins.â
Skye pales. âAre yâ¦you sâ¦sure?â
âYes, look.â She points at the screen. âThis is baby A.â She points at a different area. âAnd this is baby B.â
Skye whimpers softly, âIs tâ¦that why, Iâve bâ¦been so sâ¦sick?â
âCould be. Were you this sick with your previous pregnancy?â
âYes.â
âAnd he didnât let you see a doctor?â
âNâ¦no.â
âAre your boys identical or fraternal?â
âIâ¦identical, I tâ¦think.â
âHmm, it seems the twins youâre carrying right now are fraternal.â
âWâ¦what does that mâ¦mean?â
âTheyâll have their own appearance and it could be two boys, two girls, or a boy and a girl. Identical twins have the same gender and most likely look similar to one another once theyâre born.
âOâ¦ohâ¦â Skye begins to cry again.
âSweetheart, donât cry.â
âThe Aâ¦alpha kâ¦knew about mâ¦my pâ¦pregnancy. He lâ¦left aâ¦after I tâ¦told him who the fâ¦.father is.â
Angelaâs expression softens. âSweetheart, I told him about your pregnancy before you were discharged the first time. He didnât exactly give me much of a choice. He wouldâve forced it out of me if he needed to. I also told him that you didnât have a choice in the matter.â
âWâ¦was he aâ¦angry?â
âNo, not when I told him. Who is the father?â
âAâ¦Aâ¦Alpha Nâ¦Nathan.â
âAh, that might explain his reaction then. He hates Alpha Nathan.â
âWâ¦why?â
âYouâll have to ask him. It isnât my story to tell.â
âI hâ¦hate h..him too. Hâ¦he bâ¦beat mâ¦me, sâ¦sâ¦screamed at me, and tâ¦took aâ¦adâ¦advance of mâ¦me. Why wâ¦wouldnât I hâ¦hate hâ¦him?â
âYou and the alpha need to talk to one another.â
âI know. He hâ¦hasnât câ¦come home yet.â
âHe hasnât?â
âNâ¦no.â
âHmm, I have a feeling I know where he is. Iâll take you there after your appointment.â
âOâ¦okay.â
Thereâs a knock on the door. âCome in,â Dr. Graylen states. The nurse that had taken Skyeâs blood when she first arrived comes into the room and hands Dr. Graylen a paper. âHmmâ¦â Dr. Graylen mumbles as she looks at the paper.
âWâ¦what is iâ¦it?â
âThe results of your blood test. It seems youâre anemic.â
Skye looks scared. âIâ¦is that bâ¦bad?â
âYes, but itâs fixable.â
âWhat dâ¦does a..anemic mean?â
âIt just means you donât have enough red blood cells. It seems your iron is low. Iâd recommend a multimineral supplement from the grocery store. Thatâll help with the anemia.â
âOâ¦okay, aâ¦arenât there iâ¦iron gâ¦gummies?â
âYes, there are, but a multimineral supplement will work better for you for now. Iron supplements and gummies can cause stomach issues. You have enough of those already. Letâs see now. I can prescribe you some anti-nausea medication and thatâll help with the severe nausea that youâre having.â
âTâ¦thereâs mâ¦medicine like tâ¦that?â
âYes. Another problem is your weight. Are you able to stand? I would like to weigh you.â
âI tâ¦think s..so. I nâ¦need help gâ¦getting dâ¦down.â
âGive me your hands.â Dr. Graylen gently takes Skyeâs hands and helps her off the examination table. Once Skye is off the examination table, she slowly limps towards the scale. She carefully stands on the scale and allows Dr. Graylen to look at the numbers. Dr. Graylen sighs and says, âSweetheart, youâre underweight. You need to eat more.â
âIâm tâ¦trying to,â Skye whispers, âI jâ¦just canât eat tâ¦too much at a tâ¦timeâ¦.â
âOr youâll make yourself sick?â
âYâ¦yes, wâ¦when I wâ¦wasâ¦.wâ¦when I wâ¦was at the oâ¦other pâ¦packâ¦â
Dr. Graylen waits quietly for Skye to tell her. âI already know,â she thinks, âI already know what sheâs going to say.â She closes her eyes and continues to listen to Skye.
â...he dâ¦didnâtâ¦he wâ¦.wouldnât let me....eâ¦eat.â
âHe didnât feed you, at all?â
âNâ¦noâ¦â
âHowâ¦what did you eat?â
âSâ¦sometimes, one of the hâ¦higher râ¦ranking wâ¦wolves wâ¦would sâ¦sneak fâ¦food to mâ¦me, bâ¦but mâ¦mostly I fâ¦foraged in the fâ¦forest.â
Dr. Graylen looks horrified. âHow would you know what was safe and what wasnât?â
âTâ¦the lâ¦library. I hâ¦have a jâ¦journal tâ¦that hâ¦has wâ¦what I can eat and wâ¦what I canât eat.â
Dr. Graylen sighs again. âYou need to start keeping track of what and how much you eat each day. If you donât start gaining weight, itâll be bad for your babies.â
âI know. Iâm tâ¦trying iâ¦really.â
âPlease try and eat several small meals throughout the day. That way youâll be able to keep food down and gain weight.â
âO..okay, Iâll try.â
âNow, then letâs go and see if Alpha is where I think he is.â
âOâ¦okay.â
Skye follows Dr. Graylen out of the hospital, and to her car. Sheâs quiet as Dr. Graylen drives towards their destination.
