Chapter 69
Ethan’s Vengeance of Love
âOh, my. You have such a sweet mouth!â Britney burst into laughter, her previously composed face
lighting up with joyful wrinkles.
Although Britney initially felt uneasy, Carolineâs sweet words quickly dispelled her discomfort. She even
went to the kitchen to assist Alice.
Caroline watched from the side and grinned like a Cheshire cat.
Alice realized she shouldnât rush Carolineâs rate of adapting to living in the Knight Residence and
decided to spend more time with her. Thus, she stayed and accompanied Caroline over the next few
days.
As Caroline insisted on sleeping with Alice at night, they shared a bed.
On the third night of Aliceâs stay in the Knight Residence, Ethan returned home late at around
10.00PM. As he made his way to the second floor, he heard voices coming from the second room.
The soft, childish voice was unmistakably Carolineâs.
He stopped outside the room and was about to knock on the door when he overheard Caroline asking,
âMommy, isnât Daddy stronger than Bruce Yeager?â
The hand that had wanted to knock on the door hung in mid-air as he subconsciously straightened his
posture since he wanted to hear Aliceâs answer to the question.
Alice paused for a moment upon hearing Carolineâs question. âSweetie, thereâs no comparison between
them.â
As Bruce was a sc*mbag, she believed there was no comparison between him and Ethan, who was
vastly superior. It would be an insult to Ethan to compare him with Bruce.
Outside the room, Ethanâs eyes narrowed. No comparison? Does she seriously think I canât even
measure up to Bruce?
âMommy, I think youâre seeing Bruce through rose-tinted glasses. No, your eyes are covered in eye
boogers.â Obviously, Caroline also misunderstood Aliceâs meaning.
âSweetie, is it really appropriate to say that to me?â Alice couldnât help but chuckle in exasperation at
how Carolineâs words sometimes seemed beyond her age.
âMs. Hall said we shouldnât be a doormat as weâll lose our dignity if we allow others to take advantage
of us.â Caroline didnât think she said anything wrong and believed her words made perfect sense.
Alice felt her lips twitch as she wondered what Cecilia had taught her child.
She believed she should send Caroline to kindergarten for some education.
The little girlâs eyes lit up as she made a serious suggestion. âMommy, why donât you find someone
else instead of Bruce? How about Daddy?â
Ethan had already withdrawn his raised hand as he leaned against the wall with his upper body slightly
bent, listening leisurely to the conversation inside the room.
He thought that what Caroline said was incredibly good!
Alice was amused at Carolineâs words. âWouldnât it be the same?â
âOf course not. Since youâre married to him, you can still have him physically even if you canât win his
heart.â The little girl effortlessly spewed out one set of words after another without much thought.
Outside the room, Ethan blinked as he acknowledged that what Caroline said made sense. Since he
and Alice were married, she definitely had him as a partner, but he wondered why Caroline said Alice
couldnât win his heart.
Alice blinked as she looked at the girl, wondering where she had learned such theories. What does she
mean by even if I canât win Ethanâs heart, I can still have him physically? I donât want him even if he is
present physically. Absolutely not!
âMommy, Daddy is a good man. You should seriously consider him.â Caroline continued to promote
Ethan to Alice.
Alice couldnât help but want to laugh. âYou havenât even met him yet, so how do you know heâs a good
man?â
âIâve seen his photos. Daddy is handsome, and even Grandma said heâs handsome, too. Daddy also
has a lot of money, enough for me and Mommy to spend. So, in the future, you wonât have to work hard
to make money.â Caroline eagerly listed all of Ethanâs advantages, hoping her parents could stay
together forever and that she wouldnât have to be separated from her mother.
Alice was well aware of Carolineâs wishes, but she also knew she and Ethan would divorce in just six
months. She would have to leave once the time was up.
Although she couldnât bear to leave Caroline, she knew she had to face the harsh reality.
In the future, Caroline would become part of the Knight Family, and Alice would gradually need to fade
out of her life.
As Alice didnât want Caroline to have a negative impression of the people in the Knight Family, she
couldnât tell the girl about the agreement that Britney made her sign, nor could she tell her the reason
why Ethan married her.
For the sake of Caroline, Alice decided to take the blame for leaving her in the future. She pondered for
a moment and came up with a persuasive excuse. âBut I donât have feelings for your dad.â
Her statement wasnât entirely false. She knew the real purpose of their marriage and had signed an
agreement to leave after six months. Therefore, she was confident she wouldnât fall in love with Ethan.
Ethan, who had been eavesdropping while leaning leisurely against the wall outside the room,
straightened up with his eyes turned cold and stern.
âWhy? You donât like Daddy?â Carolineâs tone was reluctant as she didnât want to give up either.
Outside the room, the upright Ethan narrowed his eyes as he also wanted to know the reason for
Aliceâs answer.
Alice sighed inwardly as she knew Caroline all too well. Once Caroline had a question, she wouldnât let
it go until she received a satisfactory answer. If Alice couldnât come up with a convincing explanation,
Caroline would keep probing and might even lose her sleep.
Since Alice had already decided to be the bad guy, she was determined to see it through to the end.
âYour father is cold, stubborn, and has a sharp tongue. He is infuriating to deal with.â She dared to say
those words with a clear conscience that it was absolutely true without any exaggeration.
Meanwhile, Ethan was momentarily startled outside the door. Is she talking about me? She said that
Iâm cold, stubborn, and sharp-tongued. Am I really that infuriating to deal with?
âI-Is that really how he is?â Caroline was a little stunned. âIn that case⦠he wouldnât be popular with
girls.â
She looked at Alice with a conflicted expression. âMommy, canât you just bear with Daddyâs flaws?â
As Alice knew she had to leave in six months, she couldnât give Caroline any false hope. Since she had
decided to be the bad guy, she would play it through to the end. âSweetie, can you please not throw me
to the wolves? I want to live a few more years.â
Ethanâs cold eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he wondered, What does she mean by throwing her to
the wolves? Wait a minute. Am I the wolf?!
