Chapter 17

for ms. brooke

Gone was time • poetry collection

you showed me the world:

deciduous trees and temperate forests,

massive glaciers and a hundred acres.

how flowing water weathers.

pictures of birds with a thousand feathers.

what the indus valley civilization was,

how the uses of rivers were endless.

the ways countries draw lines between each other,

waging wars that make me shudder.

why land and water attract man,

how things could promptly disintegrate into sand.

why certain industries succeeded and failed,

where christopher columbus once travelled and sailed.

how precipitation comes in rain, snow and sleet.

why earth is in trouble with this rising heat.

how hurricanes devastated unsuspecting homes,

leaving thousands helpless and alone.

the brutality that man were capable of,

how what prevails isn't always love.

you showed me all these things,

on top of being selfless, warm and understanding.

i didn't appreciate you back then

and caused you distress time and time again.

but thank you for showing me the world,

and the endless possibilities for an insecure young girl.
