Chapter 39: Rising Stars
Beyond the Spotlight
The excitement around Aaron and Kelvin's nominations for the 56th NAACP Image Awards had become a full-blown celebration of their careers. The weight of the recognition was heavy in the best possible way, filling them both with a sense of pride and determination that they had worked so hard to achieve.
The phone buzzed again on Aaron's desk. He picked it up and glanced at the screen. It was another congratulatory message, this time from Chloé. Sheâd sent him a picture of her and Kimberly, both holding glasses of wine and beaming with smiles. The caption read: "To the best actor I know, whoâs making history in the making! So proud of you, Aaron!"
Aaron smiled and quickly typed a response: "Thanks so much, Chloé! Letâs all celebrate soon!"
He set the phone down and leaned back in his chair, trying to process the flood of emotions that came with such an honor. He still couldnât quite believe that he had been nominated for two prestigious categories: Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance â Motion Picture for his role as Mufasa in Mufasa: The Lion King and Outstanding Actor in a Limited Television (Series, Special, or Movie) for his performance in Rebel Ridge.
It wasnât just about being recognizedâit was about the journey to get here. Aaron knew how much of a dream it had been, and he couldnât help but feel immense gratitude for every step that had led to this moment. His hard work in bringing Mufasaâs voice to life, his portrayal of a complex character in Rebel Ridge, all of it had culminated in this moment of acknowledgment. But it wasnât just him who was being celebrated.
Aaron turned to Kelvin, who was sitting on the couch, his leg casually propped up on the table. They had been talking about their upcoming projects when Aaron had received the news about his nominations, and Kelvin had been right there with him, equally stunned and excited. Kelvin had also received a nomination in the same category as Aaron for Outstanding Actor in a Limited Television (Series, Special, or Movie), but for his role as Martin Luther King Jr. in Genius: MLK/X.
âMan, can you believe this? Weâre both in it,â Kelvin said, shaking his head in disbelief. âI mean, I know weâre good, but to be recognized for this level of work... Itâs a blessing.â
Aaron nodded, feeling a deep sense of camaraderie with his best friend. âYouâve been killing it, Kelvin. Your performance as MLK was next level, bro. Honestly, Iâm just proud to be in the same room as you, let alone nominated alongside you.â
Kelvin laughed, shaking his head. âStop, man. You earned it. Mufasa? Thatâs legendary. And Rebel Ridgeâdonât even get me started on that. You brought something unique to that character.â
The two shared a moment of appreciation, understanding that their shared success wasnât just about individual accomplishments. It was about the bond they had built over the years. They had been through the grind together, pushing each other to be better, to go further. And now, both of their hard work was being acknowledged on one of the biggest stages in the entertainment industry.
âDo you think we stand a chance?â Kelvin asked, his grin mischievous but sincere.
Aaron chuckled. âOf course we do. But honestly, the fact that weâve made it this far is already a win for me.â
The conversation shifted to their plans for the upcoming months. With the NAACP Image Awards ceremony scheduled for February, there was a sense of anticipation building. But for Aaron and Kelvin, it wasnât just about the night of the ceremony. It was about what came nextâthe doors this recognition would open for them, the new roles, the new opportunities, and the chance to continue proving themselves in the industry they loved.
Later that evening, as Aaron shared the news with Kimberly, he could feel the pride in her voice. âYouâre going to absolutely crush it, Aaron,â Kimberly said, her eyes shining with pride. âIâm so proud of you. And Kelvin, too. You guys have worked so hard for this.â
Kimberly's words resonated with him deeply. This wasnât just a win for himâit was a win for all of them. For the people who had supported him from the beginning. For the team that had believed in his talent. And for the ones who had walked alongside him in the trenches, like Kelvin.
But there was one person Aaron couldnât wait for Kelvin to tellâsomeone who had been a constant source of support for them both: Kehlani. Kelvin had a special bond with Kehlani, who was also one of their closest friends. They had been there for each other through thick and thin, and their connection had only deepened over time.
Kelvin immediately called her, his voice bright with excitement. âKehlani, guess what?â
Kehlaniâs voice came through the phone, a mix of surprise and warmth. âWhatâs up, Kel?â
âI just got nominated for an NAACP Image Award!â Kelvin blurted out, unable to contain his excitement. âFor Genius: MLK/X! I canât believe it, Kehlani. Iâm in the running for Outstanding Actor in a Limited Television. And Aaronâs nominated for twoâheâs got Mufasa and Rebel Ridge! Weâre both in it!â
Kehlaniâs gasp of joy was instant, her voice nearly vibrating with enthusiasm. âWait, what? Oh my god, Iâm so proud of you, both of you! Thatâs HUGE! You guys are truly out here making history.â
Kelvin couldnât help but laugh at her enthusiasm. âI know, right? It feels surreal.â
âYou better save me a seat at that awards show,â she teased. âIâm already planning my outfit. But seriously, I canât wait to see you both take it all in. You deserve this, Kel. And Aaron, too. This is only the beginning.â
Kelvin smiled, knowing how much this meant to both of them. âYouâve always had our backs, Kehlani. We wouldnât be here without the support from you and everyone else in our circle.â
Kehlaniâs voice softened, filled with genuine affection. âThatâs what family is for. You both got this. Youâve earned it.â
As the call ended, Kelvin felt a deep sense of gratitude. It wasnât just about the accoladesâit was about the people who had helped them get there, like Kehlani, who had been unwavering in her support. The realization of how much love and loyalty surrounded him made everything feel even more meaningful.
With the 56th NAACP Image Awards ceremony still a few months away, Kelvin knew that whatever happened next, he and Aaron were already winning in more ways than one. They had built something specialânot just in their careers, but in the friendships and relationships they had fostered along the way.
And with that, the excitement and anticipation of what was to come only grew stronger. It was just the beginning.
