16 Fairy Ring

One night, when Chelsea got to their usual meeting spot in the park, Danny floated around a ring of mushrooms, scrutinizing it. It was off to the side of the clearing and partially under a bush.

“Careful,” Chelsea said, smiling. “That’s a fairy ring.”

Danny looked up at her, startled. “What’s a fairy ring?”

“It’s where fairies danced,” Chelsea explained. “If you’re not careful, the fairies will draw you into their dance.”

“I’ve never seen a fairy before.”

“Doesn’t mean they’re not real. Ghosts are real, after all.”

“Wait a minute,” Danny said, coming over to her. “Didn’t I tell you that when you met Frostbite?”

Chelsea giggled. “Maybe.”

Danny crossed his arms.

“Oh, who cares if you did or didn’t?” Chelsea said. “The point still stands.”

“Yeah, I guess so,” Danny said. “So, if fairy rings are so dangerous, shouldn’t we destroy it?” He made his hands glow.

“You can’t destroy a fairy ring! Or else you’ll be cursed!”

“I’m already half dead,” Danny said cheekily. “How much more cursed can I be?”

“I don’t know,” Chelsea said hesitantly, searching for a better answer.

“We don’t want anyone else getting into trouble, right? I say we destroy it.”

Chelsea bit her lip. “I see your point, but it just doesn’t seem right.”

“I’m gonna destroy it.”

“Danny, don’t!”

Too late. He shot an ectoblast at the ring, which threw mushrooms and dirt into the air. Chelsea watched, horrified, as he destroyed the whole ring, including the section under the bush.

When he was done, he said, “See? Nothing happened.”

Chelsea shook her head. “Maybe not yet, but you wait and see.”
