Chapter 556
Changing Only For Her
Charles felt a shiver down his spine when he saw the way Tristan was glaring at him.
âI-I-I was just joking, Mr. Tristan! Even if I did like Sophie, thereâs no guarantee that sheâll like me back!â
he explained in an attempt to save himself from Tristanâs wrath.
âCorrection, I will never like you because youâre not my type at all,â Sophie said.
Ouch! That hurt! Am I really that bad? Is Sophie always that mean to others?
âMy heart is broken again, Sean! Please comfort me!â Charles pleaded.
âNo, I donât think so. Your heart seems perfectly fine to me!â Sean replied. Thatâs what he gets for breaking so many girlsâ hearts!
Ysabelle couldnât help but chuckle as she said, âSee, Charles? This is payback for all those girlsâ hearts youâve broken in the past! One day, youâll meet a girl who will counter playboys like you!â
Charles shook his head in response. âNo, that day will never come! I would never give up an entire forest for a single tree!â
There are plenty of beautiful women out there, so why should I limit myself to just one? Isnât it better to go around sampling them all?
Ysabelle rolled her eyes at him. âHonestly, Iâm really looking forward to seeing you meet your match.â
âAs I said, there will never be such a person because I wonât allow that to happen!â Charles repeated himself.
He didnât believe in retribution for oneâs actions.
Jenniferâs eyes were filled with disdain when she saw the group fawning over Sophie.
Whatâs wrong with them? Theyâre clearly knowledgeable people, so why would they believe that Sophieâs present is the real deal? Do they take us all for fools? Sophie does not belong in this circle!
The problem is, how can I get rid of her for good? I canât stand the sight of her!
Minerva, who was standing beside her the whole time, could see that she was very upset.
âThereâs no need to stress yourself out, Jennifer. That thing has got to be a fake. Sheâll become the laughingstock of Jipsdale once those appraisers confirm that it is fake. On top of that, I think you should just forget about her. You two arenât related at all, and she has always been calm and composed about everything. Youâll come off as the loser if you take her too seriously.â
Jennifer made it this far because sheâs excellent in almost every aspect, but she started changing ever since Sophie showed upâ¦
âShut up, Minerva!â Jennifer snapped at her impatiently.
âShut up, Minerva!â Jennifer snapped at her impatiently.
Minerva pouted and looked away in response.
Being Jenniferâs friend, she always had Jenniferâs best interests in mind when giving advice or helping her out. However, Jennifer was so stubborn that she refused to listen to any of Minervaâs advice, so there wasnât much Minerva could do.
Meanwhile, the Chief of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs had arrived at a conclusion regarding the itemâs authenticity.
âOld Mr. Lombard, we have confirmed that this item is indeed the real deal. How did you find it? Could you hand it over to the country?â the chief asked excitedly.
âReally? Are you sure that this is authentic?â Although William was hoping for it to be authentic, he still got excited when he heard the chief say it.
The chief nodded as he replied, âThatâs right. These men are the best appraisers in the country, and they have all confirmed that it is indeed authentic. Thereâs no way theyâd be wrong about this. I know youâve spent many years looking for this, but it means a lot to the country. Would you be willing to hand it over?â
Everyone at the scene fell silent after hearing that.
What? Is that really authentic? This isnât a joke or something, right?
Naturally, Jennifer took it the worst out of everyone else. She knew just how badly William wanted to get his hands on that national treasure, but she wasnât able to get it for him.
The diamond she spent a lot of money on was the best she could manage, but it paled in comparison to Sophieâs gift.
Just like that, the diamond she presented felt like it had become worthless all of a sudden.
That was probably the worst feeling she had ever experienced.
Minerva had thought about comforting her, but she held her tongue when she recalled Jenniferâs stubborn attitude from earlier. She knew it was pointless to say anything if Jennifer wouldnât listen.
Unless Jennifer gives up on this herself, nothing I say will change her mind.
Tristan held Sophieâs hand and asked, âHow did you pull this off? I didnât know you were capable of something like this!â
âOh, I just had a few of my friends get it for me!â Sophie replied casually.
Although she made no mention of the price she had to pay, Tristan was able to figure that out on his own.
Thereâs no such thing as a free lunch. Given how valuable this national treasure is, she mustâve traded something of an equally high value for it. Why did she have to make such a huge sacrifice for me?
âI told you that you donât have to do anything, didnât I? All that matters is my feelings for you. What anyone else feels about you is irrelevant.â
Not wanting him to worry about her, Sophie replied, âYouâre overthinking it, Tristan. Getting this really was a piece of cake. Besides, youâre not the only one with awesome friends!â
While some people may find this task impossible, some can easily accomplish it.
Sean, Charles, Felix, and Ysabelle felt speechless when they heard that.
Okay, then⦠It looks like weâre just not capable enough to have such powerful friendsâ¦
After giving it some serious thought, William decided to hand the national treasure over to the country.
âAs you all know, I have indeed spent many years searching for this treasure with the intention of handing it over to the country. Now that I have found it, at last, itâs only natural for me to do so.â
The chief was close to tears as he said, âYou really are a hero, Old Mr. Lombard. I doubt anyone else wouldâve been willing to hand it over like this. I thank you on behalf of the country. Also, Iâll be sure to mention your name when reporting about this. You can rest assured that the country will reward you properly for this!â
I had a chance to be promoted to a much higher rank, but I remained in my current rank in order to look for this treasure. Who wouldâve thought Iâd be able to find it someday?
The Chief of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs then stepped aside to make a phone call.
About ten minutes later, a group of soldiers arrived to retrieve the treasure.
Everyone at the scene was so shocked that they would probably lose sleep that night.
Since the military had gotten involved, they had no choice but to believe that the national treasure was authentic.
But how did Sophie pull off such an amazing stunt? Isnât she just a university student with a pretty face? Just how many more secrets does she hold?
