chapter 24
Rani Saheba : The Queen
Chapter Twenty-ThreeThe Queen Must DieThe desert was quiet again. The birds sang. The blood was cleaned. But inside the palaceâsilence had never felt so loud.Rani stared at the throne she hadnât sat on in days. Not since Veerâs death. Not since her motherâs resurrection.Rukmini hadnât left the palace.Sheâd taken residence in the North Chamberâher old quarters, untouched since her supposed funeral. The staff bowed to her like she never left. The advisors had questions, but none dared speak aloud. Not yet.Dev found Rani on the terrace at dawn. She hadnât slept.âI remember when I first stood here,â she said, not turning. âI was sixteen. My father had just named me heir. I looked out at this land and told myself I would never let it break me.âDev stepped closer.âYou havenât.âShe turned now. Her face wasnât tiredâit was carved.âThen why does it feel like Iâm about to be executed by my own blood?âDownstairs, in the war chamber, Maya was not calm.âRukminiâs holding private meetings with the council. Sheâs rewriting protocol. She even unsealed the foreign intelligence files.ââSheâs not planning a coup,â Dev said carefully. âShe already owns the system.ââShe never stopped owning it,â Maya snapped. âShe just wore your crown on her daughterâs head.âRani said nothing.Because a part of her already knew.Later that night, Rukmini invited Rani for tea.Not whiskey. Not war talk.Tea. In the garden.Rani arrived, dressed in black. No jewels. No bangles. Just purpose.Rukmini, by contrast, was radiant in soft ivory, sipping from a porcelain cup as if none of itâthe fake death, the treason, the murderâmattered.âYou were never supposed to find me,â she said softly.âYouâre very bad at hiding,â Rani replied. They sat in silence for a moment. Then Rukmini said it:âStep down.âRani didnât react.âYouâve built something magnificent,â Rukmini continued. âBut you are not ready to lead it into the next age. Youâre angry. Broken.ââAnd youâre⦠what? Enlightened?ââIâm efficient,â Rukmini said. âI donât confuse vengeance with vision.âRani stood slowly. âAnd I donât confuse ambition with entitlement.âAs she turned to leave, Rukmini said:âIf you walk away now, I will let you live.âRani stopped mid-step.Didnât turn around. Then said:âIf I walk away now, Iâll never stop looking over my shoulder.ââAnd Iâd rather die facing forward.âThat night, the death list arrived. Two names on it:â Maya Singhâ Dev RaichandSigned by Rukmini herself.Sealed with the royal insignia. It was an order for quiet elimination. An old tradition. Predecessors used it to clean the palace before major power shifts.Rani stared at the letter in her hands. The guards who brought it had no idea sheâd been the intended next name.âSheâs clearing the board,â Maya whispered.âNo,â Rani said.âSheâs trying to rewrite the game.âIn the west wing, Dev was already packing.âYouâre not staying?â she asked.Dev looked up. âYou know I will if you ask me to.âShe stepped closer.âNo,â she said. âI want you to stay because you want to.ââI want you safe.ââI want us free,â she said quietly. Then added:âBut I donât want to survive another war without you.âHe kissed her forehead.âIâm not leaving.âHours later, the trap was set.Rani summoned the council for an emergency address.Rukmini would be present. It would be televisedâpublic. Controlled. Ceremonial.Except this timeâ¦It wouldnât end with words. As the court gathered, the doors closed behind them. Locked.Rani stood on the dais.Rukmini sat across her, calm, poised, already sure sheâd won.Rani looked around the room, then down at her mother. And said:âYou taught me to be a queen.ââBut you forgot to teach me what to do when my teacher becomes my enemy.âThen she raised her hand. The screen behind her flickered.Security footage played.Clips of Rukmini in the vault.Clips of her signing the kill orders.Clips of her saying: âShe was never meant to rule.âGasps. Movement. Guards hesitating.Rukminiâs eyes narrowed.âYou think exposing me will save you?â she said. âYou think the truth has power here?ââNo,â Rani said. And thenââBut I do.âShe pulled the ceremonial dagger from her side.Walked down the steps.Face-to-face with her mother.âYou told me to become a queen who never begged.âShe placed the dagger between them.âNow bow to the crown you made.âThe court waited.Rukmini did not move. Then Dev enteredâbehind her.And placed a gun gently on the table.Rukmini glanced at it.Then at Rani. And for the first timeâ¦She smiled.Just a little.Almost⦠proud.âI underestimated you,â she said.âI was born because of you,â Rani replied. âBut I was forged by everyone you tried to break.âRukmini was taken away quietly. No chains. No screaming.A royal exile. The public was told she had returned to spiritual retreat.Only Rani, Dev, and Maya knew the truth. That night, a raven flew over the palace. And peace returned. But Rani didnât sit on the throne. Not yet.Not until it felt like hers.(Nxt)
