chapter 21
Rani Saheba : The Queen
Chapter TwentyThe Judas Inside the Throne RoomThree hours after they resealed the chamber, the palaceâs central power grid went dark.No flickering. No warning.Just black.Total.The emergency backup kicked in almost immediately, but not before half the security feeds glitched out and went offline.Dev, standing on the balcony just outside Raniâs chamber, moved the second it happened. Knife at his side, earpiece live.âMaya, talk to me.âHer voice snapped back. âIâm on the north wing. Systems were manually bypassed. This wasnât Veer.âDev stilled.âThen who?ââSomeone inside.âIn the war room, Rani stood alone before the giant display. The systems came back slowly.Line by line, data loaded. But one screen remained black: the west vault feed.A place no one had touched in years.Except now, it glowed red.Access granted.Biometric ID: Maya Singh.Rani didnât move. Not at first. Then she picked up her pistol and walked out without a word.Dev intercepted her on the stairs.âSheâs not the traitor,â he said, immediately, as if already defending Maya.âShe opened the west vault.ââSheâs your second-in-command.ââAnd he was mine once too.âThey stood face to face.âDev,â Rani said, low and certain. âIf sheâs been playing both sides, I need to know.âDev didnât argue again. He just followed. The vault was carved from stone and steel. Ten feet tall. Lined with reinforced titanium.Inside were three things:â Raniâs personal archive.â A backup of every strategic operation since her rule began.â And a case of old, locked letters â her fatherâs.When the door hissed openâ¦Maya was already inside. But she didnât reach for the files. She didnât run.She turned. Her hands were up.âI didnât betray you,â she said.Rani raised her gun. âConvince me.âMayaâs voice was steady, but her eyes were glass.âHe contacted me six months ago. Veer.ââSaid heâd kill Rafiq if I didnât feed him crumbs. Just crumbs.ââSo I gave him enough to keep my brother alive. Patrol logs. Storage unit rotations. Nothing major.âRaniâs jaw tightened.âAnd the tunnel?ââI didnât tell him about that. Someone else did.âDev took a step forward. âWho?âMaya turned to Rani.Said it so quietly, it landed like a hammer.âBhairav.âSilence dropped like a blade.Rani blinked once. Slowly.Maya continued, âHe was loyal to your father. Not you. You took the throne he was meant to protect.ââThat man has saved my life five times.ââAnd maybe heâll save it again,â Maya said. âBut you never checked his ledger, did you? You never noticed that every time something vanished, Bhairav was on the opposite wing.âDevâs voice was sharp. âWhy say it now?ââBecause Iâm done lying for someone elseâs war.âThat night, Bhairav vanished. His uniform left on his bunk. His weapons gone.Heâd cut the cameras leading out of the west wing and slipped through a narrow crack in the outer wall â a crack only someone who built the security system would know.Rani stood at the breach.Watching the sand whip in the wind. And for the first time in yearsâ¦She looked hurt. Not angry. Not vengeful.Just deeply, silently wounded.Hours later, she sat with Dev in her chamber.Whisky untouched.Weapons untouched.Only the fire burning between them.âHe was with me since I was twelve,â she said.Dev didnât answer.âI let him hold the blade when I couldnât. I let him carry decisions I shouldâve made. And I never once asked him what he wanted in return.ââMaybe just your throne,â Dev said softly. She looked at him.âNo. Not the throne.ââThen what?âHer voice broke in a single word:âMy father.âIn the darkness of a hidden desert base, Veer sat at a circular table.Bhairav knelt before him.Bloodied. Breathing hard. Alive.âYou took your time,â Veer said.Bhairav spat red. âI waited until the right piece moved.ââRani knows?ââShe suspects. But she hasnât said it yet.âVeer leaned back.Smiled.âGood. Because the next time we meet⦠she wonât have time to speak.âBack in the palace, Rani stood in front of the sealed throne chamber again.Alone.Her fingers hovered over the latch. But didnât press it.Instead, she whispered:âLet him come.ââLet them all come.ââBut I will never fall on my knees.âShe turned and walked away. One queen. One war.One countdown to the end.(Nxt)
