Chapter Seven: Book of Magic
Shifting the Shifter (Shifter World - Book Six) (Series of 13 Short Stories)
âYouâre telling me.â Gerald breathed heavily against Josiahâs back.
âWill it always be like this?â Josiah asked.
Gerald hummed. âI think so. Itâs part of being a Fated Mate. We were once one being, you know.â
Josiah nodded. âYeah. Shar, let me read the book.â
Gerald smiled. âAnd what did you learn from it?â
Josiah shrugged. âA lot, but nothing about the dark witches and wizards.â
Gerald sighed. âYeah. I think Dustin said his mom may have a book to help us with that.â
âShouldnât we be reading it before we go after them again?â
Gerald froze for a moment and kissed Josiahâs cheek. âYouâre brilliant.â
Josiah grinned. âI try.â
âIf I could move my cock right now, I would be fucking you again.â
Josiah chuckled.
Gerald reached into his pants pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed Darylâs number since he was their Alpha. He chuckled. Now that he has a mate, Daryl is his Alpha. Go figure.
âYou two done already?â Daryl asked with a chuckle when he answered.
âStill knotted,â Gerald grinned. âBut thatâs not why Iâm calling. Look, Josiah has a brilliant idea, but I donât know how we can take care of it before we go after the club tonight.â
âWhatâs up?â Daryl asked.
Gerald told him what his mate had suggested, and Daryl laughed.
âTell that beautiful mate of yours that he isnât just a pretty face.â
Gerald grinned. âDonât I know it. So how can we get the books here before we raid the club tonight?â
Daryl laughed. âHave you forgotten we have two vampires?â He said, then hung up.
Gerald snorted. âActually, I had.â He chuckled.
Josiah turned his head and smiled at him. âSo, Iâm more than a pretty face, huh?â
Gerald grinned. âMuch more.â
âI hadnât thought of Tate or Bridget either,â Josiah admitted.
Gerald nodded. âTheyâre such a part of my life; I forget theyâre bloodsuckers.â
âHow much longer do we have?â Josiah asked.
Gerald looked at his watch. âIâd say, about fifteen minutes or so.â
Josiah nodded. âCan you tell me more about you while we wait?â
Gerald kissed his cheek. âI would be happy to.â

âLook who finally joined us.â Shar smiled when she saw Gerald and Josiah walking to the table she was sitting at with the other girls in their group.
âGo away, Gerald,â Lyvia said as she took hold of Josiahâs arm and pulled him toward the table.
Josiah smiled as he looked back at Gerald, who was also smiling.
âThe guys are over there.â Maddy pointed to a room off to the side.
Gerald nodded, then kissed Josiah and headed toward the door Maddy pointed to.
âSoooo. Scoop,â Shar said as she picked up her cards.
âWhatâs to scoop about?â Josiah asked as he looked through his pockets for any kind of cash.
Maddy pushed him some chips and smiled at him.
âIs he as big down there as his body predicts?â Shar asked as she discarded three cards from her hand.
Josiah choked on the water the waitress had just handed him.
The girls giggled.
âI know heâs not as big as Rolando; because Rolando is a bear.â Maddy grinned.
âAll of our fine mates are gifted down below,â Lyvia smirked.
âYeah, but Gerald is black. And for a wolf, his body is huge,â Shar said, looking up at Josiah.
âRolando is black too,â Maddy reminded her, not that Shar needed the reminder.
âYes, but youâve already bragged about your mate, Sis,â Josie said with a wide grin as the others chuckled.
Maddieâs cheeks turned bright red as she looked down at the cards sheâd just been dealt.
âWell,â Josiah said, recovering from his near drowning. âIf I had a measuring tape, I could give an exact measurement, but if I were to guess, Iâd say about fourteen or fifteen inches long and as thick as your wrist,â he said, pointing at Lyviaâs wrist.
âHoly fuck,â Lyvia said, staring at her wrist.
Shar spat her water all over her cards, and the others laughed.
âOkay, enough talk about dicks,â Pearl said as she set her cards down. âRoyal flush.â
âAh shit!â the other girls said as they tossed their cards onto the table.
Sharissa used a few napkins to dry off her cards before she returned them to the dealer. âSorry,â she said with a sweet smile.
The dealer nodded to her but didnât say anything.
âIâm done at this table,â Pearl said as she stood.
âOnly because youâve won every hand.â Shar snorted.
Pearl kissed Shar on the cheek. âIâll buy you all dinner,â she said as she turned from the table with her winnings.
Shar made a face at her back, and Pearl smiled. âKeep that up, and Iâll make it stay that way.â
Shar straightened her face, knowing the woman could do it.
âDonât look so serious, Sharissa,â Lyvia said as she threw her arm around Sharâs shoulders. âYou know Pearl wouldnât really do that. Would you, Pearl?â
Pearl turned to them and winked. âNah, youâre family. I donât disfigure family. Besides, youâre Dylanâs favorite family member.â She smiled at Shar, then moved to another table to check it out.
Everyone stuck their tongues out at the witch at the same time, and Pearl laughed.
âWould she really do that?â Josiah asked as he walked beside Shar and Lyvia.
âNah.â Lyvia grinned. âSheâs family. Sheâs just messing with us.â
He nodded. âBut Iâm notâ¦.â Josiah stopped what he was about to say when he saw every woman in his group turn to him.
âDonât you dare finish that sentence,â Maddy said, pointing a finger at him. âI have known Gerald longer than any of them. Gerald is Rolandoâs best friend, which makes him family, which makes you family. And I know the others feel the same.â
The other girls nodded.
âDonât ever think youâre not family,â Shar said, placing her hand on Josiahâs arm. âYouâre my brother now. Would say sister, but even though youâre not the Alpha Mate, youâre still a man.â
âA beautiful man,â Josie said with a grin.
The others nodded in agreement.
âLook, I donât know any of these girls here, except Lyvia, but if theyâre anything like her and Rajâyouâre family. Even if you werenât mated to their friend,â Mara said, pointing at Josiah.
Shar nodded. âWeâre just closely connected with the Fated Mate stuff. Mara isnât a fated mate, but sheâs cousins with our brother Raj, which makes her family.â
âBut youâre one of us.â Lyvia took hold of Josiahâs other arm.
âFated Mate,â Pearl said with a bright smile.
âFamily.â Shar nodded.
âFamily,â the other girls agreed.
They all burst into laughter and wandered around the casino, looking for something fun to do.

Gerald looked at the book Tate had open in his hands.
âShouldnât we wait for our mates?â he asked, looking around the room.
âThey should be here soon,â Dustin said as he watched Tate. âWell?â
Tate grunted. âPearl should be reading this,â he grumbled. âSheâd understand it better.â
âGood grief, let me see it,â Bridget said with a growl as she took the book from Tate.
âWhy again arenât you out there with the women?â Tate growled as he watched her read the book. Heâd almost lost a few brain cells trying to understand that thing.
âBecause gambling is for suckers.â
âDonât you suck?â Tate asked innocently.
The others chuckled at his innuendo.
She smirked. âNot as much as you do.â
âOooo,â the guys said, their eyes squinting at the two vampires.
âAt least I know when to stop,â Tate grumbled.
âYes, we all know youâre the better vampire here,â She grumbled, then tossed the book onto the table. âThat thing is cursed.â
Tate chuckled. âJust because you canât read it doesnât mean itâs cursed.â
She stuck her tongue out at him, then turned her back on him.
âWhy donât you two just fuck and get it over with?â Dustin said as he watched the two ex-lovers.
Bridget started to gag, and Tate snorted.
âThatâs been over for over a hundred years,â Tate said as he looked at the book again.
âAnd the winner is!â Pearl shouted as she and the girls entered the room. Her hand was in the air with a large wad of cash.
âI guess you won,â Dustin said, watching the other women slump into the roomâdeflated.
The only one who looked almost as happy as Pearl was Josiah.
âDid you win anything, baby?â Gerald asked as he moved closer to Josiah.
Josiah nodded. âSisters,â he said, lightly kissing Gerald on the lips. âThank you.â
Gerald grinned. âIf thatâs all it takes to make you happy, Iâll give you a dozen more.â
Josiah chuckled. âIâm sure weâll get more as more Fated Mates are revealed.â
âAh, shit,â Pearl grunted, then fell to the floor, her wad of cash falling from her hand.
âPearl!â Dylan called out as he rushed to her side.
âI think the Goddesses are revealing something again,â Shar said as she watched Pearl convulse on the floor.
âWhatâs going on?â Josiah asked as he leaned against his mate while they watched Pearl.
âPearl is directly linked to the Goddesses,â Gerald whispered in his ear, then kissed his temple.
Pearlâs eyes blinked open, and she looked up at them.
âWhat did they have to show you this time?â Dylan asked, holding her head in his lap.
She turned her head to look at him. âThe next Fated Mate will be activated soon. We need to get this over with so we can get on with the other stuff.â
Dylan nodded as he helped her up and got to his feet.
âWe need you to translate this book,â Bridget said, pointing to the book on the table.
âWow.â Pearl moved over to the book. âYour mother really does have just about every book on the Supernaturals and Magic.â
Dylan shrugged. âWeâve read all the books but this one. Never could understand it.â
Pearl opened the book and started reading it. After fifteen minutes, Dylan pulled out a chair for her, and she sat. An hour later, she looked up at her mate and smiled.
âYour brother was right,â she whispered.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at her.
âWhich brother?â Dylan asked.
Pearl looked at Daryl. âUnderneath all that magic, theyâre just humans.â
Daryl grinned. âI already figured that out.â
âDoes that mean we can beat them?â Dylan asked.
She looked up at him and chuckled. âOh yes, theyâre beatable. And I think weâre going to get rid of enough of them in the next few days to put a huge dent in their population.â
Everyone in the room grinned.
âLooks like your friend is missing out on all the fun,â Mara said, bumping her shoulder into her cousin.
Raj smiled. âAt least youâre here,â he said, wrapping his arm around her and giving her a squeeze.
âOkay, so whatâs next?â Gerald asked as he and Josiah stood up from the couch theyâd been cuddling on.
âNow we take out the other club in Vegas. Then figure out where the other ones are located.â Pearl closed the book and handed it to Tate. âTake this back to the Kraftman house. We donât want anyone finding it here.â
âHow bad is that book?â Dylan asked as he watched Tate disappear.
Pearl looked at Dylan. âExtremely, if in the wrong hands.â
âShit,â the five brothers hissed.
âWell, letâs get going,â Pearl said as she headed for the door.
Tate reappeared in the room, and they followed Pearl from the room and out to the parking lot.
Whatever is next, they have each otherâs backs.
