Chapter Nine: Save the Girls & Go Home
Shifting the Shifter (Shifter World - Book Six) (Series of 13 Short Stories)
âShar, calm down,â Dustin whispered as he wrapped his arms around her from behind.
âBabies,â Shar cried.
âI can wipe their memories. They wonât remember any of this,â Tate said as he moved closer to Shar and Dustin.
Dustin looked at his friend. âThanks, man.â
Shar looked up at Tate. âBabies,â she whimpered.
âI know,â Tate whispered back.
âWhat do you care about, some damn humans and shifters? Itâs not like youâre connected to any of them,â the dark wizard asked as he watched the vampire.
Tate snarled at the man but didnât answer.
âWhen does the vampire come in?â Bridget asked, looking at the witch.
âUsually, an hour after closing. He fucks all the girls one at a time and tells them what theyâre to do that day and into the night. We get really good money, thanks to him. The girls donât fight back with rough customers, and they pay good money toâ¦.â
Sharissa screamed and tried to get to the woman again. Before the woman could say anymore, she exploded before them. Blood and goo hit the shield, making Shar and Dustin jump back. The wizard screamed bloody murder, literally.
Shar and Dustin turned around to find Kristoph standing beside Pearl, everyoneâs eyes open wide in shock.
âShe has been sentenced to death,â Kristoph said. âAnd I couldnât stand to hear any more of that filth coming from her mouth.
âPlease,â the dark wizard begged.
âBegging isnât going to save you, Iâm afraid,â Kristoph said, shaking his head. âBut we do need the information you have stored in your brain,â he snapped his fingers, and the man disappeared.
Shar slumped into her mateâs arms and started to cry. âI want to see Joy.â
Dustin nodded. âSo do I.â
âYou all did a fine job with this one. You deserve a break. Take a couple of weeks off before you go hunting again.â Kristoph looked at his daughter. âYouâre with child, are you not?â
Pearlâs face turned beat red. âYes, Daddy.â
Kristoph smiled. âGo take a break. If the Goddesses clue you in on anything, let us know.â
She nodded. âWill you come see me?â
âOf course,â he said as he pulled her against him and kissed her forehead.
âWhat about the employees down below?â Rolando asked as he looked down at the people still staring up at the broken glass.
âWeâll take care of everything,â one of the other elders with Kristoph said. âYou kids get going home. If we need anything, weâll contact you. Kristoph is right; youâve done a wonderful job.â
âWhat about the vampire?â Sharissa asked, looking at the elders.
âIâll take care of him,â Tate said, stepping forward.
The elders nodded. âWe leave him in your hands, Tate Umber.â
Tate nodded, then disappeared.
âWeâll make sure the girls donât remember anything.â Bridget kissed the twins each on the cheek and disappeared.
âDo you think thereâs anything still between Bridget and Tate?â Shar whispered to Pearl.
Pearl chuckled. âI doubt it, but itâs fun to watch them argue.â
Shar chuckled. âThey work well together, though.â
âThey do,â Dustin said as he pulled his mate back into his embrace.
âIâm ready to take my mate home,â Gerald said as he wrapped his arms around Josiah.
âMe too,â Rolando said as he moved over to his mate.
âTwo-week vacation before we start hunting again? Iâm down for that,â Mara said with a smile.
âIâm ready to hold my cubs,â Lyvia said with a frown.
âMe too,â Raj said as he pulled his mate close and kissed her forehead.
âLetâs head home then,â Daryl said as he headed for the window and jumped down.
âI think Iâll take the stairs,â Shar said as she headed for the door.
âGood call.â Dustin chuckled.
Soon they were in their vehicles and heading to their hotel to gather their belongings. It will take them a while to get home, but they were more than ready for that vacation to start.

âSheâs adorable.â Josiah smiled as he watched Shar and her daughter.
Shar looked up at him and smiled. âI have a feeling youâll have your own soon.â
He looked into her eyes. âYou think?â
She giggled. âYouâre not in heat anymore. You havenât been since you came down for breakfast before we went shopping.â
Josiahâs cheeks turned a bright red. âDo you really think the Goddesses made it so I could carry a pup?â
She shrugged. âWhy not? There have been stranger things.â
Josiah chuckled. âHow do I find out?â
âYou can ask Bridget or Tate when they get back,â she said as she leaned over the crib to place Joy down for her nap.
âI hope youâre right,â he whispered. âBecause that would mean the pups I saw in my dreams while I was in captivity are mine and Geraldâs.â
Shar smiled. âI hope so too.â
âThere you are,â Gerald said as he pushed the nursery door open.
âShhh.â Shar and Josiah hissed at him.
Gerald froze in the doorway. âSorry,â he whispered.
Shar smiled. Josiah is definitely ready to be a parent. Even after all that happened to him, the Goddesses had ensured he knew his future was bright. She fleetingly wondered if he would need sunglasses, then giggled at her horribly stupid thoughts.
âYou ready to go home?â Gerald asked, smiling at his mate.
Josiah nodded, then kissed Shar on the cheek. âSee you around.â
Shar smiled at Josiah, then looked at Gerald. âYou better bring him around,â she said, pointing a finger at him. âA lot.â
Gerald chuckled. âYes, maâam.â
She nodded, then turned back to her daughter to watch her sleep.
Gerald took Josiahâs hand, and they left the nursery.
âThat was a pain in the ass,â Tate said as he appeared in Dustin and Sharâs living room.
âHow did it go?â Dustin asked with a grin.
âWell, one less vampire to deal with,â Tate said as he plopped down on the couch. He looked over at Gerald and Josiah and smiled. âHey, you two, you heading out?â
âHome,â Gerald said with a smile.
When heâd moved here with Rolando and Maddy, heâd found a small apartment to rent in town. It was cheap, but home, for now. Heâd wanted to save his money for when, or if, he started a family. Even if he had to adopt, heâs always wanted kids.
Tate looked at Josiah, then down at his stomach and back up at his face, and started laughing.
Josiahâs cheeks turned a bright red, and Geraldâs eyes narrowed at the vampire.
âWhat?â Gerald asked.
Josiah shook his head at the vampire, and Tate smiled at him.
âNothing you need to worry about. You two kids head on home. Weâll fill you in later.â Tate winked at Josiah and went back to talking to Dustin.
âThat was weird,â Gerald said as he and Josiah headed down the path toward his car.
Josiah only nodded, a brilliant smile on his face.
Gerald opened the door for his mate, and Josiah beamed up at him as he said thank you.
Gerald closed the door and went to the driverâs side. The drive home was quiet, and he couldnât get the thought of pups out of his mind. He parked in the parking lot, then helped his mate from the car, and they walked up to his apartment.
âItâs not much,â Gerald said as he opened the door. âBut it will do, for now.â
Josiah nodded as he looked around the small living room and kitchen.
âItâs nice,â he said and meant it.
It wasnât too bad for a small apartment, especially after living in a cage for ten years.
âWell, if we decide to adopt kids, like in your dreams, weâll buy a house close to Dustin and Shar and the rest of them.â Gerald set down his bag with his and his mateâs clothes packed inside. They need to go shopping for more clothes for Josiah.
âUhm, Gerald.â Josiah chewed on his bottom lip.
âYes, Mafilio?â Gerald asked, turning to him.
âWe wonât need to adopt. The pups in my dreams werenât adopted,â Josiah said with a brilliant smile.
Tate had confirmed what Shar had said.
âOh?â Gerald asked, his eyebrows raised.
Josiah nodded as he moved closer to his mate. âThe Goddesses knew what they were doing.â he placed his hand on his mateâs chest and felt a shiver run down his back when Geraldâs muscles moved under his touch.
âHow so?â Gerald asked, his heart beating faster and faster. Is he saying what he thinks heâs saying? âJosiah,â he whispered.
âTate confirmed what Shar and I were discussing in the nursery,â Josiah whispered.
âAre you sayingâ¦.â No⦠he didnât want to think it if it wasnât true. Gerald sucked in a long breath.
âIâm going to have your pup,â Josiah whispered so softly that Gerald had to use his wolfâs hearing to hear him.
âJosiah,â he breathed.
Josiah smiled up at his mate. âIn thirteen weeks, youâre going to be a daddy.â
âFuck yeah!â Gerald hollered with excitement as he lifted Josiah into the air and spun him around.
Josiah chuckled.
Gerald set his mate on his feet, then leaned his forehead against his. âI love you,â he whispered.
Josiah smiled. âI love you too.â
âDo we call you mama or daddy?â Gerald asked with that grin Josiah loved so much.
âI think daddy.â He chuckled. âWith as many babies being born within the Fated Mates, thereâs going to be a lot of mommy and daddy hollerings.â
Gerald smiled. âAs long as we are among them, I donât care how confusing it gets.â
Josiah nodded as he looked into his mateâs eyes. âI hope they have a blend of our colors. That would be so beautiful.â
Gerald nodded. âBlack and grey wolves, canât wait.â
Josiah chuckled. âShar pointed out that Iâm no longer in heat.â
âYeah, Iâd wondered about that,â Gerald said.
âIt also explains why my sexual organs are so different. I guess I have ovaries.â
Gerald chuckled. âThat would explain your sopping wet ass.â
Josiah let out a laugh that sounded like a snort.
âSpeaking of which.â Gerald grinned. âHow about we celebrate?â
Josiah nodded. âIâd like that.â
Gerald turned Josiah around and led him to the bedroom. They celebrated through the night and finally fell asleep when the sun shined through the windows.
Gerald woke a few hours later and looked down at his mate, cuddled against him. A pup. Heâs going to be a father. It was hard to comprehend, but the Goddesses had said they would provide.
âDo you like what you see?â Josiah asked, a grin playing on his lips.
Gerald chuckled. âVery much,â he said, kissing him lightly on the lips.
âAre we going out today?â Josiah asked as he moved up to look down at his mate.
âNope.â Gerald grinned. âWeâre staying in bed all day. Weâre still celebrating.â
Josiah grinned. âI can get behind that.â
Gerald pushed a lock of hair out of Josiahâs eye. âI told you, Iâm the one who will be getting behind you.â
Josiah snorted a laugh. âActually, could we do missionary?â
Gerald grinned. âNow, that, I can get behind.â He moved his mate under him and made love to him until they got too hungry. They ate in bed, then made love until the sun went down.
It was hard to believe how much Geraldâs life had changed since the night his best friend found Maddy in the woods. And now he has his own mate, and theyâre all going to be parents.
âI love you, Gerald,â Josiah said as he cuddled against him.
Gerald sighed. âI love you too, Mafilio.â He whispered as he closed his eyes.
âI hadnât realized until now what the Goddesses were telling me to live for,â Josiah said, his eyes opening.
âI thought it was the pups,â Gerald said, opening his eyes and looking down at his mate.
Josiah shook his head. âNo. It was you.â He looked up at Gerald. âThey wanted me to live for you. The black shadow in my dreams was you.â
Gerald smiled. âWithout you, I would be a shadow of a man,â he whispered.
Josiah nodded. âWe are where they want us to be.â
âHere and now, this is what we live for,â Gerald said as he kissed his mate.
âHere and now.â Josiah nodded. âWe live for each other.â
âFor each other.â
âFor each other,â Josiah said again as he moved over top of Gerald.
They started another session of lovemaking.
Gerald looked into his mateâs eyes and knew he was one of the luckiest men in the world of shifters.
