Chapter 1978
Madeline Crawford and Jeremy Whitman
Madelineâs sudden gesture caused Jeremy to stop abruptly.
He felt his heart beating faster, but it was not a joyous rhythm.
âJeremy, do you have something on your mind?â
Madeline finally asked. She did feel that Jeremy looked perturbed.
Upon hearing that, Jeremy lifted his eyes and shook his head.
âThe biggest thing on my mind is you.â âReally?â Madeline giggled.
âIâm sorry, Linnie. I was thinking about something just now so I didnât catch the teacup. Iâve caused you pain.â Jeremy caressed the back of Madelineâs leg which had been burned as his heart ached, even though the burn was not too serious.
Madeline smiled softly. âI know you didnât do it on purpose. I can endure such pain, but I canât endure you having something on your mind which you arenât telling me.â
After Madeline said this, Jeremyâs expression looked solemn.
Madeline recomposed herself and asked, âIs it about the maid?â
When Jeremy heard this, a look of loss evidently flashed across his face.
Madeline furrowed her eyebrows as well. âThat day⦠Did something really happen between you and her?â
After she said that, Madeline could see that Jeremyâs expression froze.
That was not a good sign.
Madelineâs heart skipped a beat, and she started to look as if she was at a loss.
She did not want to think too much at this moment, but the air around her started to become heavy.
After a while, Jeremy lifted his eyes and looked into Madelineâs eyes who looked as if they were at a complete loss.
âLinnie, I was framed by Carter.â
Carterâs helpless statement passed through Madelineâs ears.
He was framed.
Madelineâs heart sank. She understood the meaning behind this sentence.
She looked at Jeremy. After a while, she came back to her senses and blinked before speaking.
âI know you didnât mean it.â
Madeline turned her face to recompose herself, but the moment she stood up and her burned leg touched the ground, she felt a pang of pain.
âHiss.â Madeline could not help but let out a groan of pain.
Jeremy reflexively grabbed Madelineâs shoulder. â Linnie.â
He felt a pain in his heart. When he saw Madelineâs dazed expression, he felt even worse.
âLinnie, I ate a small piece of cake, and after I ate it, I felt dizzy. I donât remember how I got to the room, and I donât know how I ended up with the maidâ¦â
âWait,â Madeline interrupted Jeremy.
There was longing in her eyes. âYou donât know how you got to the room? Did you only wake up after?
Do you think that nothing happened between you two and that was just a ruse?â
Madeline analyzed it this way because something like this had indeed happened before.
Moreover, she felt that while the man was muddleheaded, it would be hard for him to do anything to a woman.
However, Madeline did not get the answer she wanted to hear.
She saw Jeremy furrowing his brows in annoyance. This meant that her analysis and imagination were wrong.
The light in Madelineâs eyes dimmed, but she did not want to blame Jeremy.
âCarter really knows how to exact his vengeance on us, â Madeline lamented and chuckled softly. She lifted her eyes to look at the apologetic man. â Jeremy, I want to be alone for a while.â
