Chapter 1882
Madeline Crawford and Jeremy Whitman
Madeline studied Adaâs flustered look and calmly pulled out an object from her pocket.
âMrs. Gray, can I request that you widen your eyes and take a good look at this. Does it belong to you?â
In unison, all eyes turned to the object which was held between Madelineâs fingers and wrapped in plastic.
Likewise, Ada immediately turned her gaze toward the object. When she saw the necklace in Madelineâs hand, she unconsciously reached up and touched her bare neck.
âYour reaction, Mrs. Gray, confirms that this is indeed your necklace.â
â .. Eveline, how dare you steal my necklace !â Ada bit back.
However, Madeline was unruffled. She contemptuously eyed Ada, who was still desperately protesting, and calmly walked up to Ada.
âI didnât steal this necklace. I picked it up at the site of the fire the day after it occurred.â
Ada fell into a panic at that moment.
She had no idea when she had lost the necklace, nor could she recall where she had dropped it.
Nevertheless, the necklace was now in Madelineâs hand, and she was claiming that it had been picked up at the site of the fire.
Upon seeing the necklace in Madelineâs hand, the police, in a serious expression, asked Ada, âCan you explain about this necklace?â
âThis⦠this isnât my necklace! â Ada simply rejected the claim and denied it.
Madeline, however, smiled. âDo you think you can just deny it by saying so? Forensic scientists can extract the fibrous tissue and fingerprints on the necklace. After a test, we will know who has worn this necklace before.â
âAda had originally thought she could erase any suspicion against her. She had not expected Madeline to bring in forensic scientists.
âWhat do you think? Should we proceed with a test? â Madeline lifted her eyebrows slightly.
Ada, at a loss of words, could only glare at Madeline.
âWhy do you insist on victimizing me, Eveline? Is it because I ruined your wedding with Carter back then?â
Madeline almost laughed out loud when she heard that. âYou have killed people, yet you are asking me now why Iâm testifying against you? Donât you think your question is ridiculous?â
âYouâ¦â Ada gritted her teeth viciously. She was preparing a retort to Madeline when a police officer approached Ada and placed a pair of handcuffs directly on her wrists.
Ada had never been treated this way before. When she saw the handcuffs on her wrists, she began struggling wildly as if she had lost her mind.
The frail disposition she displayed earlier had disappeared.
âWhat? How dare you arrest me? Do you know who I am? I am the Viscountess! â
âRegardless of your status or position, if you break the law, you will be executed. Donât waste your breath, Ada.â Madeline delivered a final blow to Ada.
âEveline⦠Crawford.â
Ada spat out Madelineâs name word by word through gritted teeth. She clenched her fists and wished she could swallow Madeline alive.
As the situation had progressed to this point, there was nothing Adaâs mother could do. She walked over to Ada and reassured her.
âDonât be afraid, Ada. Just go with them. Mom will hire the best lawyer to help you!â
It would have been better if she had not said that. The moment Ada heard those words, she seemed to explode like a time bomb all at once!
âHelp me? You should help yourself instead! You made me do all this!â
