Chapter 1716
Madeline Crawford and Jeremy Whitman
As Shirley was speaking, she looked at Lillian who was leaning against the hospital bed with a confused face.
She placed the babyâs breath, which had been in her hand, on the bedstand. A moment ago, Shirleyâs eyes had been full of hostility and sarcasm. Her eyes were gentle as they scanned Lillianâs small face, then, with an arrogant and disdainful look, fell back onto Madeline.
âEveline, I know youâre a special woman. Youâre so special that youâre unyielding and tenacious.
However, she should also know that Iâm an evil woman. That is why I had especially concocted the poison in your body.â
âWhat about it?â Madeline asked indifferently.
Shirleyâs beautiful eyes narrowed. âYou already had three flare-ups. After these three stages, the poison in your body will slowly reach the final stage.â
As she spoke, she stopped for two seconds, taking two steps toward Madeline.
As Shirley confronted Madelineâs naturally stunning face which wore no makeup, Shirleyâs eyes were tinged with a hint of regret and pity.
âEveline, you wonât be able to endure the final stage.â
âIs that so?â
âYes.â Shirley decisively gave her a firm answer. âEveline, let me ask you a question. Whatâs the most terrifying and mortifying experience that youâre most reluctant to relive in your life?â
The most terrifying and mortifying experience that she was not reluctant to reliveâ¦
For some reason, Madeline felt as if her emotions were being drawn out by Shirleyâs words. She immediately thought of the experience from years ago. Those extremely painful and dark memoriesâ¦
At that moment, Shirley caught the uneasiness that flashed across Madelineâs eyes.
âLinnie. Linnie.â
Upon hearing the manâs gentle voice calling out to her by her side, Madeline abruptly returned to her senses. She blinked in surprise as she noticed that, unbeknownst to her, Shirley had already left, and Jeremy and Jackson were before her eyes.
Madeline forced a smile on her face quickly. âJeremy, Jack, youâre here.â
âMommy, what were you thinking about just now? Daddy and I were calling you the entire time, but itâs like you didnât hear us.â Jackson lifted his handsome little face, peering at Madeline curiously.
Jeremy too was confused. âLinnie, what were you thinking about?â
âNothing,â Madeline denied it. She did not want Jeremy to worry about her when he was already so vexed, so she came up with a random lie. âI was just thinking about Lilyâs condition.â
Jeremy held Madelineâs hand to comfort her. âIâve managed to contact the most prestigious doctor in the field. Lily will recover.â
âReally?â Joy immediately appeared on Madelineâs face.
Jeremy nodded affirmatively. âI promise. Our daughter will definitely be fine.â
The manâs firm promise immediately made Madeline feel much more optimistic.
Jackson ran over to the bedside and held Lillianâs hand.
âLily, are you in pain?â Jackson asked, pointing at the needle on Lillianâs neck.
Lillian shook her head. There was a small smile on her fair yet pinkish little face.
âIt really doesnât hurt?â Jackson was still uneasy. He felt that it must be very painful to have such a thick needle in oneâs body.
Lillian pursed her lips. When she was about to shake her head, she nodded this time instead.
It hurts. How could it not?
Seeing this scene unfolded, Madeline and Jeremy felt as if their hearts had been pricked.
Jeremy patted Madelineâs shoulder. As he lifted his gaze, he noticed the bouquet of babyâs breaths next to Lillian.
âDid someone come to visit Lily?â
