“It feels like a waste if I don’t hire you as my secretary,” Jeremy said as if he was feeling rueful.

Madeline sensed that something was amiss with Jeremy. She took a step back, but Jeremy suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“Are you declining my invitation?” There was a smile on his lips, and beneath his bottomless eyes, there was an unclear sense of sentiment.

Madeline tried to control herself and pretended to be calm. “Mr. Whitman, you’re different from usual.”
