chapter seven | don't love you yet, but probably will
THE VERY FIRST NIGHT | gracie abrams
A NEW CITY, which meant a new hotel and a new venue to check out. Normally, Gracie would have taken Mila with her, but she was alone this time. By alone, that meant Jordan followed her around. She wishes to be alone truly, but it appears that it wasn't an option for her.
Jordan tried to talk to her about her new album, but Gracie tuned her out. She had other things on her mind.
She thought back to what Jordan had said days ago, and that moment with Mila under the stars at the rest stop. It's been days since that happened, and every time she thinks about it, her feelings change. It's a feeling so intense that she could write about it, and she started doing that.
It was a song titled "Let It Happen." One lyric stuck with her the most.
A lyric that she felt truly explained what she was feeling or wasn't feeling? She couldn't figure it out yet.
"Gracie, are you listening to me?" Jordan questioned, snapping her fingers in front of her, trying to grasp her attention for just a minute. "This is important and you're not listening." Her tone came out a little more annoyed.
"I'm sorry, I'm just kinda distracted right now." Gracie apologized, glancing over at her manager to see the annoyed look on her face. "What were you trying to tell me?"
"Some celebrities are coming to the show tonight, we have to be more prepared and focused," Jordan repeated, now catching Gracie's attention. It was clear that she didn't know how serious it was until now. "We have to make sure we put on the best show we can. If they see how good you are then it opens collab opportunities for you and opens the opportunity of new clients for me. It's a win-win for everyone." She continued.
"Who's coming tonight?"
From there, Jordan went on to name the few celebrities that were coming. Those celebrities are Noah Kahan, Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Lizzy Mcalpine, and Olivia Rodrigo. Hearing those names put a smile on Gracie's face.
"Do you understand how serious this is now?" Jordan asked with the bossy tone she always has.
Gracie nodded before she answered. "Yeah, I understand." She responded, earning a nod from her manager. "So what do you suggest?" Gracie asked, walking toward the stage that had been set up a few days ago.
"We're going to spend all days rehearsing. We'll get Mila here later. What matters right now is you."
"I made plans with Mila. Do I have enough time to tell her plans have changed before we get started?"
"I'm sorry, we have no time." Before Gracie could protest, Jordan walked off to chat with the crew, telling them to start getting ready for soundcheck and to run through the show. Gracie wanted to at least give Mila a heads-up on the change of plans, she felt horrible that she couldn't. Mila was going to be so mad and Gracie hated the idea of that.
It was time for their concert. The soundcheck was great, everyone got their stuff ready, and Mila was nervous. She had caught wind of who was showing up tonight, these people were artists that she'd looked up to for a long time and they were watching her perform. This was a huge deal to her.
She was hurt to not hear from Gracie all day until she had gotten to the venue, but she was distracted from it, for now.
Gracie watched from the wings as Mila performed her set, a smile on her face. If she could, she would watch Mila perform for hours. Now that she's thought about it when she discovered Mila's Instagram. She watched every video Mila posted of other performances she did, she remembers thinking how talented she was.
That's when it hit her, she knew how she wanted this song to go. The second this concert was over, she had to get to work on this song.
Mila had taken her final bow and then ran off stage into the wings where she was greeted by Gracie. "That was so good, Mila!" Gracie proudly spoke, pulling the out-of-breath and sweaty singer into a hug. She felt Mila hug her back, her grip a little tighter than Gracie's. "I'm so proud of you."
"I can't believe I sang in front of my biggest inspirations in music, including you," Mila replied, a huge smile on her face. It was clear to Gracie that this was the happiest she had been in a while. "Are you ready to go out there and knock their socks off with your talent?" She asked her, pulling back from the hug enough to look at her.
"I am now, I'll see you after the show." Gracie pulled her into one last hug and kissed her forehead before grabbing her guitar, going out on the stage, and waving at the crowd.
Mila watched Gracie perform the first song, soon being joined by Gracie's manager, Jordan.
"She's doing great out there," Mila spoke up, her attention never leaving Gracie. There were a few times that Gracie would look over at her to flash a smile or playfully wink at her. That was the level of friendship that they were at now, they were playfully flirting with each other. "I'd be surprised if no one asked her to collaborate after today."
"You should be proud of yourself, a few of them asked me about you," Jordan spoke, quickly earning a confused yet shocked look from Mila.
"What do you mean they asked about me?"
"I've directed them to your manager so you can ask him about that."
Mila couldn't answer, all she could do was smile. With the biggest and happiest smile on her face, turned her attention back to Gracie and the stage. That was news that she never expected to get, now she had to ask Adam about it.
This tour gave her the start she needed. That was all thanks to Gracie.
Hours after the concert had ended Mila ended up back at her hotel. Normally, she would be trying to work on new music, but she decided to just relax in bed instead. She scrolled through her social media, checking her DMs and posts she'd been tagged in.
She loved seeing all the pictures and videos from the shows, especially the ones of Grace.
In every picture she'd seen, Gracie always looked so happy on stage. She found where she belonged, Mila however, she still wondered if she was meant to do this her whole life. After tonight's show, she believed it a little bit more than she did before.
After half an hour of doom-scrolling, Mila was pulled out of her trance by a knock on her door. She got out of bed, stretching once her feet hit the ground. "Hold on, I'm getting there as quickly as I can!" She called out once she heard another knock. Whoever was trying to get her attention must have something important to talk to her about. Once she reached the door, she unlocked it and opened it to see Gracie with a soft smile on her face. "What are you awake for? I thought you would have been knocked out by now." She spoke, stepping out of the way to let her in.
"I was working on some songs, but I had an offer for you," Gracie replied as she walked inside, soon hearing the door close behind her.
Mila was interested to find out what this offer could be. She motioned for her to continue, taking a seat on the bed.
Gracie took a seat next to her, clearing her throat before she spoke again. "There's this song I'm working on that needs a featuring artist and I want it to be you." She smiled as she spoke, glancing over at her friend. She watched as a smile crept upon her face, a sign that she could continue. "I wanted to tell you about it earlier, but things got so crazy with the tour and it just slipped my mind. It'll be fun though, we can work on it together and it'll be a bonding time for us and just time to hang out while also working." She continued.
"That sounds super fun, I accept."
Once Gracie got her answer, she jumped up to celebrate, earning a laugh from Mila. Once she heard the laughs, she quickly chilled out and cleared her throat. "Great, I'll be back tomorrow to get started. I'll see you in the morning."
Mila stood up, following her to the door. "I'll see you tomorrow, Abrams." Once she was gone, Mila shut the door, letting out a happy sigh.
She better get some sleep so she could have enough energy for tomorrow.
