CH 12: Apologies & No
Glazed Doughnuts
All Mew could do with his broken heart was cry. So, he did. He let his emotions take over his sanity and became a teary mess. His hands were clutching at his heart, trying to keep it from jumping out of his chest and leaving him empty. His eyes were shut close, tears were paving their way from his eyes to the ground where his head rested. His legs were numb. He couldn't feel them. He wanted to get up and at least reach the living room. But no. His torso just won't rise.
He was groaning and screaming in heartache. He was out of breath but still, he could not stop crying. His voice was already hoarse. His condition spoke nothing but regret.
He regrets that he couldn't understand his feelings earlier. Why did he only have to understand that he had started to love Gulf when another girl was all over Gulf's body. If only he had realized it all a little earlier, maybe they would be in each other's embrace right now. Maybe Mew would have had a shoulder to lean on. Maybe he would have someone to rely on. But his stupid brain was too slow for that.
And his heart was back to its cage once again. Gulf must be happy with that girl. Maybe Gulf was already thinking of a divorce. Then, Mew won't even have those pieces of paper they called 'Marriage Certificate' to hold onto. By now, Mew only thought of himself as a waste of space.
All he knew was that he was too late. Too late in loving Gulf. He was so late that Gulf already found someone new. But it would be too hard for Mew to find someone new. Given his medical condition, nearly impossible. Mew didn't realize but he slept there on the floor of tiredness from crying so much.
*NEXT AFTERNOON, SUNDAY*
Mew was woken by continuous knocks. "Who the hell is there?" He stirred up. And suddenly the knocks stopped. Mew was suspicious of it and so he fished his phone out. He called Win. This man was on Mew's speed dial along with Wan. These were the only two he could unconditionally trust. Win picked the call after some missed rings.
[THE CALL]
Win: Are you ready to talk to me now, phi?
Mew: Win can you and Wan please come to my house?
Win: You mean Mr. Kanawut's place or your dad's?
Mew: My dad's. Be here quick. Please.
Win *worried*: Anything wrong?
Mew: Just come here you both. And then I tell you.
Win: Okay phi. I'm on my way.
[CALL END]
Mew looked out of the window but there seemed to be nobody. "Who the hell was banging the door?" Mew asked himself. He was still staring out of the window when he saw two feminine figures approached the door. He checked the time and it was half an hour past three. The knocks were heard again. This time more violent. Mew walked to the door and opened it slightly and was greeted by an ugly sight.
He saw his stepmother and stepsister standing there. "What the fuck took you so long to open the door?" Pling shot at him. Mew was already not in a good mood because of the series of happenings from last night and now he saw his least favorite humans at his door again. "I thought we weren't going to meet again?" Mew glared at the two. He still didn't let them in. He had no reason to let them in. This house was Mew's property so who comes here and who doesn't was under his control. And he was ready to even let a terrorist in but not this mother-daughter duo.
"What are you doing here anyway?" Mew was stern with every word. "Moving back in," Jenna said. "And why is that so?" Mew asked. "Because I got transferred here. And this is our house," Jenna said. Mew scoffed, "Sorry, but the property papers have my name as the owner. And as the one whom this house belongs to, I don't let you two in." Pling was visibly pissed. "We've lived here for years. And we will continue to live here," Pling said in an announcing tone. Mew smirked but someone called his name before he could say anything. His two friends were there, already glaring at the stepfamily of Mew.
"Get in you two. I'll deal with them first." Mew said. Pling and Jenna moved forward to get inside but Mew blocked them. "I wasn't talking to you. You already took advantage of me for too long so now fuck off," Mew glared at them. Win was practically dragging Wan inside the house. Wan stopped by Mew. "If you feel like hitting them but can't because they're women, I'm right behind you, P'Mew," Wan offered him. Mew smiled at pet her head before turning back to the shameless ones.
"Get lost if you have any self-respect," Mew ordered. But the argument was to go on for hours. Win and Wan tried to help but Mew shouted at them to just wait for him.
"You are such an ungrateful bastard!" Pling was about to slap Mew but her wrist was caught in the air. "I think I warned you the last time we met. That you better not mess with my employees," it was Gulf who caught her wrist. Jenna was terrorized by the way Gulf was glaring at them. But Pling didn't know who he was. "It is our family matter. You are the one interfering!" Pling yelled. "Just let them be Mr. Kanawut. Though it isn't a family matter it is a personal one. So, please let it be," Mew was looking at the ground. "I don't care. If these two don't leave then I'm calling the police. And they'll be charged for the intrusion of private property," Gulf was still glaring at Pling.
Jenna somehow convinced her mother to leave. "Can I know what brings you here?" Mew asked Gulf. Gulf looked at him, care and worry in his eyes. Gulf saw how puffy Mew's eyes were and how hoarse his voice became. "Mew, let me clear what happened yesterday. Please, you misunderstood it really bad," Gulf was pleading for permission. Mew finally looked him in the eyes. "It's actually fine. You are free to be with whomever you want. It is none of my business, actually," Mew was forcing himself to smile. "How is it not your business? You're my husband, Mew," Gulf was breaking, again. "I think you should have thought of this fact when you were bringing a girl home," Mew was losing his voice. Gulf couldn't believe what he was hearing. Mew hated him more than ever. After a while, Gulf was forced to leave because Mew was not ready to listen to him.
Mew walked back in. He was greeted by his two friends' eyes staring at him. "I am telling you whatever the hell has been happening so listen up," Mew responded that unheard question. Mew told them everything from the change in Gulf's behavior to what had happened last night. Wan was not buying it, "I know that it's you who misunderstood. You should listen to your husband's words too." Mew was already about to cry because of remembering what happened last night. "How can you say that!? You weren't the one who saw that from your own eyes!" Mew almost yelled. Wan sighed, "Because I'm a girl and have the sixth sense! P'Mew~ you shouldn't come to conclusions without knowing everyone's point of view!" Win agreed with her, "Even if what you said is true, let's have your husband confess it first."
Mew was so done with everyone. He even shooed the two away because he wanted to cry again. One thing that Mew didn't tell them was, he started to love Gulf.
*WEDNESDAY*
***GD CORP***
Mew was at his station when he heard a girl call him. He looked up and it was Puifai. "How can I help you, ma'am?" Mew kept his professional facade. Puifai made an apologetic face. Mew closed his eyes to roll them. Just for the sake of his irritation, he couldn't lose a business associate. "Can we talk?" Puifai asked. Mew looked at the time, it was nearly break time. But he wasn't sure if he wanted to talk to this woman or not. Maybe it would help him get a clearer idea of the situation. So, he just thought that listening to her words won't hurt him as he was already too broken for any further damage.
"Can you please say it here itself?" Mew asked of her. Puifai nodded and smiled nervously. "That day... it really isn't what you think," she started. Mew looked lifeless.
"I first met Gulf at a beach. He was looking for a keychain he seemed to have dropped. I found it and returned it to him. That's when we became friends. The first time I saw him, he was crying because he lost that keychain and said that it was from someone he really loves," Puifai saw the rising curiosity in Mew's eyes. She continued, "There he told me how the man he loves always keeps rejecting him. He said he tried everything he could think of but still no luck. But he never mentioned to me that he was married. I only found out when you walked away that night."
Couldn't even mention that he's married? He really stopped loving you, Mew, Mew's brain told him but his broken heart still couldn't rest.
"He never told me that it's you who he loves. If I had known of it earlier, maybe I would have helped him better. And please don't misunderstand my intentions to help him. I am an only child with a single parent. I always wanted a sibling figure and I found that in Gulf. I really respect him like my brother and nothing beyond that. So, seeing him in this situation makes me sad too," she continued her story. Mew still didn't get the answer for why was she touching her husband.
"And that night, we were discussing the same issue. Gulf was about to cry and wasn't listening to my advice. That's why I was standing in front of him and cupping his face. To gather his attention. Not to kiss him or anything of that sort. He seemed to get my point and therefore he smiled in agreement. And then you came and misunderstood the whole thing," Puifai concluded.
Mew's eyes were dead again. "What about the change in his behavior?" Mew said something after a long time. Puifai sighed, "He was afraid that maybe his feelings aren't only just love now. He thought that what if he was now only courting you because it seemed challenging. He would let you go if he started to think of you as a possession. But he can never think of you as anything other than the only person he will ever love. So please talk it out with him."
'Possession'? Now that's what you've become Mew... once again, Mew wasn't functioning properly. His brains were too numb to be comprehending anything properly. He thought that only being away from Gulf can help him now. But he couldn't resign. Gulf wouldn't let him. He still wasn't ready to accept that Puifai and Gulf were nothing more than friends. Maybe I should talk with him about divorce, it would be better for us both, Mew thought. I can recover my heart and he can be with whomever he wants then. I'll talk to him about this, Mew was being senseless.
"Now I get what you meant when you said 'I'm tired' when you left. You were too tired to love me any longer," a sole tear ran down Mew's face. Puifai had already left.
*MEANWHILE*
***GULF'S CABIN***
Gulf was discussing something with Win. The younger was trying to avoid his boss's eyes as he didn't want to be dragged into this mess. But Gulf had enough of this negligence. Mew was moving back deep into his shell. Mew didn't come back home after that incident and didn't allow Gulf into his house. Gulf could rarely see Mew. Mew never talked anything other than work to Gulf. But even while doing so, Mew won't look at Gulf's face. This matter couldn't reach Fon and March as then it would be the talk of the town.
"Win," Gulf called him to stop the topic of work. Win looked at him, "Yes, sir." Gulf sighed, "Are you also believing Mew's theory of that incident?" Win was caught off guard, "I can talk about that matter?" Gulf nodded. And there went Win Metawin the blabbermouth.
"Both me and Wan don't believe what P'Mew told us. As we still don't know what your account is on that thing. But P'Mew doesn't want to talk about that matter. This week I and Wan have been taking turns to visit him every day and check if he's doing anything stupid to himself," Win said. Then he asked, "But can you please tell me what actually happened?"
"Mr. Kanawut you have a conference with the foreign-" Wan walked in suddenly but stopped when both the men glared at her. "You can have your talk first. I'll leave," she was about to turn but Gulf stopped her. He said, "No! wait. This matter involves you too. So come here and listen." Wan walked up to the desk and Gulf started his story.
"So how has he been doing?" Gulf asked once his tale was done. "P'Mew wants to be alone all the time. So, whenever we're there, he locks himself in his room," Win said. Wan added, "We can only hear muffled crying noises from his room. My intuition is that he has feelings for you. And..." Gulf looked at her in disbelief, "And what?" Wan closed her eyes in tiredness. "And he's hurt because of what he saw. We know that he's had a hard life because of his family's problems and now that night adds up to his stress," she said.
Now all Gulf had to do was to somehow talk to Mew. But that would be hard as Mew won't listen to him. But he had to end this drama. He had to get his husband back. Though he wasn't sure if Mew really had feelings for him or was it just hurt because Mew really did carry a lot of hurt in his heart. And he somehow started believing Gulf and then... he misunderstood things really bad.
