Chapter 724
The Unfaithful Mr. Scott ( Melanie Smith )
Chapter 724
Melanie stood at the end of the relatively secluded corridor. She stared at the tiles in the corner and asked, âYou donât want Zara to help me with the lawsuit?â
It would make sense since she was going to sue Viola and Eugene still had not gotten around to defending her yet. Why would he allow LeapCoâs lawyer to help her?
With a self-deprecating smile, Melanie was about to retort when she heard Eugene casually say, âIâm just letting you know that Zara and Luther share some grudges.â
Melanie nodded. âWhat grudges?â
âZara and Luther were once students from the same school. They had a very ugly dispute over a case. Word has it that Zara was the plaintiffâs lawyer and Luther was the defendant.â
âWho won?â
âThe plaintiff withdrew the lawsuit.â
Melanieâs breathing hitched in her chest for a moment as Eugene calmly continued, âZara and Luther are famous rivals in the industry.â
Melanie understood now. It was no wonder Zara did not hesitate to accept her case when she heard Lutherâs name.
She lowered her eyes in thought for a moment before asking Eugene, âDid you call me specifically to tell me this?â
âI just wanted to remind you that Jacksonâs flight back is on Monday. Donât forget it,â Eugene replied leisurely.
Next to him, Lee, who had come to deliver documents, heard what he said and felt his forehead twitch. He hesitated to speak.
It was not until Eugene and Melanie were done talking about Jackson that he hesitantly asked Eugene, âMr. Scott, arenât we also going back to Jepton tonight? Why didnât you teft Melanie?â
Eugene looked up, his gaze even. Pointing his finger at the document, he asked, âHave the documents at headquarters been prepared?â
Lee paused. âIâll go now.â
Before he could turn around, he received a text message. He glanced at it, and his expression immediately turned serious. He handed his phone to Eugene.
Thanks to Dylan, Melanieâs mood had been downcast up until the afternoon. In the evening, she received a call from an unfamiliar number. The voice on the other end belonged to a middle-aged man. âMiss Smith, Iâm Luther Laing. May we meet up for a chat?â
They arranged to meet nearby. When Melanie arrived at the designated location, Luther was already there. Unexpectedly, Viola was also present.
âMiss Smith,â laither greeted her upon seeing her while Viola looked at her with a smile that was not
quite genuine.
Melanie took a seat and asked Laither, âWhat do you want to talk about?â
Luther seemed somewhat surprised by Melanieâs forwardness but quickly regained his composure. He took out a document from his briefcase and handed it to Melanie.
âMiss Smith, since youâre such a straightforward person, I wonât beat about the bush. We hope for settlement. Here are our terms. Feel free to review them. If thereâs anything youâre not satisfied with, we can discuss revisions.â
Melanie glanced at the document briefly. âMr. Laing, regardless of the conditions, I wonât agree.â
âMiss Smith, I advise you to reconsider,â Luther replied while maintaining his calm demeanor. He opened the document and said earnestly, âThe terms offered here are quite favorable. Even if you win the lawsuit, you may not receive as much compensation-especially if you lose.â
Viola chimed in her agreement with a nod. However, compared to Luther, there was a hint of
smugness and sarcasm in her tone. She cautioned Melanie, âI advise you to agree or you wonât fare well in the end.
âDo you know who Mr. Laing is? Heâs won nearly every case he took on. So, youâve already lost.
âIf I were you, Iâd be smart and accept this settlement. Youâre just courting disaster if you go up against him. Besides, do you know who hired Mr. Laing for me-â
She intentionally lowered her voice at the end, her expression self-assured. âItâs someone even Eugene dares not cross.â
Someone exclaimed at those words, but it was not Melanie. It was Luther.
