Seeing how unmoved Melanie was, Yvonne clicked her tongue and asked, âWhy donât you have any
reaction?â
âHow do you expect me to react?â Melanie asked back blankly.
Yvonne opened her mouth as if to say something but hesitated. In the end, she just said, âDo you know the Scotts have already found a candidate?â
Melanie lifted her glass of water, giving Yvonne a faint glance. âThe daughter of Peyton from Prime City, Evelyn Shue.â
Yvonne immediately widened her eyes. âHow did
you know?â
Melanie did not respond. She remembered the last time she encountered Evelyn at LeapCo and the words she had said. She was also aware of Stellaâs satisfaction with Evelyn.
Therefore, apart from Evelyn, Melanie could not think of any other suitable candidate for Eugene,
Seeing Melanie genuinely indifferent, Yvonne sighed lightly. âBoring! I thought youâd at least react a little.â
Yvonne and Melanie were now quite familiar with one another. Given Yvonneâs straightforward personality, she had no qualms about mentioning Melanieâs relationship with Eugene.
Melanie herself did not mind others bringing it up. The facts were undeniable and did not require denial.
Indeed, she and Eugene had a past, and she once had feelings for him. That was an undeniable fact. So what?
She did not like him anymore.
When Henry called, it happened to be evening. Melanie had just made plans with Yvonne to grab a meal when she heard her phone ring. She answered the call and heard Henryâs urgent voice. âMel, where are you?ââ
âWhatâs wrong?â
âCome and accompany me. Iâmâold now, and no one wants me. No one can control me.â
There was a hint of anger in the manâs voice. Melanie also heard the honking sound in the background on the other end of the line.
Startled, she asked, âWhere are you?â
Henry was in a small park in the city center. When Melanie went over, Landon was whispering something to him.
She walked over slowly and asked Henry, âWhy did you come here? Itâs windy here.â

When the old man heard Melanieâs voice, he slowly raised his head. His old face looked lonely as he held Melanieâs hand with a sigh. âYouâre the only one who still cares about me, good child.â
Melanie instinctively sensed something off with the old manâs tone and frowned. âWhatâs wrong?â
Henry shook his head, not saying anything. Landon gestured at her, and Melanie silently followed them. It was not until they found a nearby restaurant that Henry held Melanieâs hand and sighed again. âMelâ¦ââââ
Melanie waited for the old man to continue, but it seemed difficult for him to get the words out.
Finally, he asked, âDo you know about the arranged marriage candidate they found for Eugene?â
Melanie did not expect it to be about this, but she nodded and said, âI do.â
âThis is a twisted trend. I donât know where it started from, but they want a grown man whoâs incapable to find a woman to marry and support him.â
There was genuine sorrow on Henryâs face. His cloudy, wise eyes were fixed on Melanie. He looked like he wanted final confirmation and asked, âMel, Iâve considered you my granddaughterâinâlaw ever since Eugene brought you back that day. Iâ¦â
As if anticipating what Henry was about to say, Melanie calmly interrupted him. She paused for a moment before continuing, âThe weather has turned cold recently. Please donât go to the park and expose yourself to the chill. It wonât be good if you catch a cold.â
Henryâs brows furrowed slowly. He covered his mouth, coughing softly. âMel, let me finish. Iâll ask you one last time. Is there really no chance between you and Eugene? Heâs about to get engaged. If you still have any thoughts about himâ¦.
âYou should tell me the truth. I donât believe I have absolutely no say when it comes to the Scott
family.ââ
