Chapter 16

Cupid

I See You (Jack Frost x Reader)

(Y/N)'s P.O.V

"Okay... Here I go," I nervously smile, Jack grinning at me reassuringly as he sets his hand over mine.

He gently moves my hand to the diamond, nodding as I nod back.

I set my finger on the diamond... And visions enveloped me.

...

..

9 year old me sat alone under an old oak tree. Its leaves were brilliant shades of orange and yellow, showing off that it was fall.

I sniffle and wipe my tears, sighing as I hug my legs to my chest.

"Stupid Mom and Dad... Why did we have to leave home? I hate this stupid village." I hiccup, crossing my arms over my knees as I cry.

"Hi..." A gentle voice greets, making me gasp as I look up from my spot with wide eyes.

A boy with dark brown hair and bright brown eyes was looking down at me with a goofy grin. His smile falls when he sees my tears, making me gasp and quickly wipe them away.

"Are-- Are you okay?" He stammers, tilting his head as he squats down to my height. "I don't think I've seen you before."

I sniffle as my eyes tear up again, startling him as he yelps.

"I-I'm... We just moved here. My momma and papa and me," I explain with a trembling bottom lip.

He frowns at me before grinning, standing tall.

"Why're you so sad? Moving is fun! See? I'm moving right now!" He jokes, spinning around before playfully falling into a pile of leaves as I giggle lightly.

The leaves fly up and around us as I wipe my tears away, giggling as I peek over at him. His eyes were closed, a grin on his face.

"Are you dead?" I poke his arm, making him snicker as he jolts up.

"Your magical touch has healed me!" He shouts in a dramatic voice before cheering, "hurray!"

I laugh, my cheeks hurting from smiling so much since I hadn't lately.

"Yay!" I giggle, watching as he gives me a side smile.

"I knew your smile would be pretty!" He smiles widely, making me blush lightly as I hide my face in my knees.

"T-- Thank you."

"Come on, I wanna show you something!" He suddenly says, quickly rising and offering his hand.

"Um... I don't know... I have to do my chores," I sigh, shaking my head.

"I can help you when we get back! It's not that far from here. It's the pond just down the hill! " He replies with a never-ending smile. "Come on. Forget your chores. We're gonna have a little fun instead!"

I look between the house and the boy, biting my lip in thought. I look up at him, his brown eyes begging for me to join him as he grins.

"Okay," I nod, nervously smiling and taking his hand. "But... Who are you?"

His hand was warm and comforting as he replied, "I'm Jack."

...

2 years later...

"Hello there!" I coo at the baby in the crib, smiling at her small brown tuff of hair and her brown eyes. "She is so adorable-- Jack she just grabbed my finger! I know babies do that but oh my gosh--"

"Wow, (Y/N)," Jack laughs, joining my side as our mother's talk in the kitchen. He waves his finger with a soft smile as she giggles. "Don't you think you're... fawning over her too much? I mean, come on. She's just a baby-- ouch!"

He yelps as the baby bites his finger, her one tooth nipping it.

"That's what you get." I state smugly with a grin.

"For what?" He winces, cradling his hand with a pout. "Stating facts? She's just a baby."

"She's your baby sister," I remind, making him roll his eyes before I lightly punch his arm. "Who you will protect and love. Right?"

"But if I protect her, who will protect you?" Jack flirtatiously questions, making me sigh and shake my head.

"Jack." His smile falls at my stern tone, flinching. "Just... Give her a chance. I know this is all different and new... But look at her!" She giggles and claps her hands, reaching for Jack as he looks towards her. "She already loves you with all her heart."

Jack looks down at his baby sister with uncertainty, sighing heavily as he shrugs with a grumble. "Fine..."

A voice calls my name, making me gasp as I rush to it while yelling back, 'coming!'

Jack watches me leave, looking back at the crib with a small sigh and a slightly uncertain and wary face.

"Okay," he mumbles, sighing and shaking his hands as he nervously looks at her. "I can do this. Just gotta get along with you. For (Y/N)."

Jack sighs, slowly picking her up. He yelps as she giggles, tugging at his hair and patting his face lightly.

"Okay, okay!" He laughs as she giggles again, lightly grabbing his cheeks. "Hey there. I'm Jack. Your older brother. And see that girl over there?"

She makes cooing noises as he balances her on his hip, pointing to (Y/N) as she speaks with her mom.

"I'm gonna marry her one day."

Little did he know, (Y/N) and her mom were listening. Her face turns bright red as her mother starts to lightly laugh, smirking at her daughter.

...

6 years later...

The leaves on the trees in front of Jack's yard were a bright shade of green, showing off Spring.

I take in a deep breath, sighing softly as the breeze flies past.

"Well, don't you look lovely," a voice greets, and someone sits next to me.

"Mhm," I couldn't help but smile, a blush no doubt on my cheeks. "You always say that, so I don't know if I believe you."

"I always say it because it's true," Jack quietly replies, leaning closer.

"Jack!" I laugh, playfully shoving him as he pecks my cheek. "Dork!"

"Yes! I kissed you!" He cheers, laughing and spinning around as I roll my eyes with a grin. "I kissed yooou!"

"That wasn't really a kiss," his sister replies, shrugging as she sits next to me on the porch. "I mean, come on. Wasn't even on the lips. Doesn't count."

Jack was too distracted celebrating, a soft snicker leaving me as I shake my head with amusement. I wrap my arm around her as she leans into me, the two of us watching Jack leap around while laughing.

...

A few weeks later...

"Why do you keep doing this?" My mother screams in a rage, making me flinch as I hide behind the corner.

"I promise you, my love, it's not what you're thinking--"

"Not what I'm thinking?" She bitterly laughs, waving the air around her nose. "You come home smelling like a brewery every night, and you say it's not what I'm thinking?"

"(M/N), just please listen--" her father squeals in a high pitched tone, ducking and dodging a vase as she throws it with a blind rage.

Usually, I would have laughed at the noise that escaped my father... But this time, it was serious.

"You lying, dirty, cheating, son of a--"

"M--Mom?" I shakily question, making her look back at me with a soft gasp as my father cringes, rubbing his neck.

"(Y/N)! Um... We were just..."

"Dad comes home smelling like that because he's helping Oliver," I interrupt in a quiet voice, her expression falling at my words. "Oliver has been feeling sad because Lily..."

"Died..." my mother finishes, rubbing her forehead as my father rubs his neck while looking down. "You thought getting him drunk every night would help him?"

"That wasn't the plan. I just wanted him to meet with the other villagers so he would remember that... He wasn't alone," he replies, slowly walking towards her. "Everyone insists on meeting at the tavern. And you know that place absolutely smells terrible. But Oliver is getting better! So... That's why--"

Mother cuts him off by hugging him tightly, crying lightly as he looks at me with wide eyes. His expression softens as he tightly hugs her back, sighing in relief.

"Thank you," he breathes out to me, smiling softly.

I grin as they outstretch their hand to me, and I rush into their hug.

...

One Year Later...

"Why?" I manage out, tears spilling from my eyes as I look between the two graves.

(M/N)- XXXX-XXXX

(D/N)- XXXX-XXXX

Joined together by love and friendship, their love knew no bounds. Together they faced the world and remained strong and true.

Died together holding hands in house fire. Even in death, they remain as one.

The sky was slightly cloudy, and the cold air stung against my cheeks and arms to show off winter.

My feet moved on their own, carrying me to the same oak tree Jack and I met under.

Unshed tears were in my eyes, threatening to spill over at any second. Which they did a moment later, a small sob escaping me as I try to wipe my tears away.

"Sweetheart," a gentle voice speaks in a soft tone, making me gasp as I look up at Jack.

His face held pain as he looked at my falling tears, his normal grin replaced with a tight frown.

"Jack-- they're... my parents, my home... They're gone!" I begin to sob again, making him flinch as he quickly kneels next to me and pulls me into a tight hug.

His back was to the tree and I was pressed against his chest as he lightly stroked my hair, flinching slightly whenever a cry escaped me.

"I know, I know," Jack softly replies, his voice weaker. "And I... I am so sorry. I know that doesn't really help, but I am."

"I should have been with them. I never should have gone into the woods! It's all my fault!" I continue crying, gripping his winter coat. "And now I'm all alone..."

"Hey," Jack gently uses his knuckle to raise my gaze to meet his. He places a gentle kiss on my forehead, sighing softly. He pulls away, looking into my eyes. "It was definitely not your fault, (Y/N). And..."

Jack's expression was firm, as a small dazzling smile graces his face and he takes my hand in his.

"You have me," he pauses, watching my face turn a light shade of pink. "And I'm not going anywhere."

I sniffle softly and lean into his embrace, Jack's arms tight around me as he kisses the top of my head, and for that moment, I didn't feel any pain or sadness.

...

A few weeks later...

"Thank you for letting me stay here," I thank for the hundredth time, no doubt.

"Of course," Jack's mom replies, smiling softly. "(M/N) and (F/N) were my most cherished friends. I could never turn their daughter away." She suddenly smirks, raising her brow at Jack as he enters with a skip in his step. "Not to mention Jack seems so fond of you."

"More than fond, mom," Jack replies, strolling to me and placing a kiss on my cheek. "I think I might love her."

His mother laughs fondly with amusement as his sister rolls her eyes with a small smile, her attention focused on the scarf she was knitting.

I snicker softly and roll my eyes at his flirtatious words, my sarcastic comment cut off by him taking my hand and lightly tugging me to my feet.

"Come with me sweetheart," he insists softly, making my eyebrows raise a bit as he leads me outside, his mother and sister exchanging a meaningful glance as his mother smiles.

...

"What's this about, hmm?" I question with suspicion as his hands cover my eyes, blocking my vision as he carefully leads me outside and into the backyard.

"You'll see," Jack replies with a soft chuckle, gently guiding me to a spot before pausing. "Okay, and... ta-da!"

Jack uncovers my eyes, revealing a picnic set up under the large oak tree in their backyard. There were lit lanterns strung in the tree, and the blanket was set up with a large basket filled with my favorite sweets and foods inside.

"Jack, what is...?" I breathe out in awe, turning back and looking at him as he smiles bashfully.

"Well-- um, it's... kind of, like... a date, if you'd like it to be." He mumbles quietly, my eyes widening as I stare at him. "Before, back there, I mean, I-- I wasn't... joking. I-- I really do, um, love... you. And I was hoping, maybe we could... you know..." Jack stammers over his words, his cheeks becoming more and more pink as he looks down sheepishly. "It'd... be great if you said something. Please. Or-- you can just totally forget about this and pretend it didn't--"

I cut him off by stepping closer, pressing a short but sweet kiss to his lips. His body tenses as his eyes widen in surprise, his cheeks flushing a bright red as he blinks quickly. After a moment, he relaxes into the kiss, his hand coming up and gently caressing my cheek before we pull away, Jack seeming to be in a daze.

"I don't want to forget it," I reply softly with a wide smile, my cheeks feeling warm as I laugh giddily. "I-- I love you too, Jack."

Jack's eyes were wide with awe as he looks at me for a moment, a laugh of relief and joy leaving him as he picks me up, twirling me around as I yelp in protest while laughing.

...

Jack and I skate together with his sister, laughter leaving us as Jack guides her while smiling adoringly at me.

...

"Jack!"

His sister groans with mock annoyance as Jack leaps around the tables of the tavern, a laugh leaving me as he presses a kiss against my cheek before continuing with his silly antics.

...

We all enjoy a feast with Jack's family, Jack's arm wrapped around me as he hugs me to his side, nuzzling his nose against my cheek as I smile happily.

...

2 years later...

My eyes were wide as I looked at Jack, his eyes narrowed but a faint spark of fear in them as he remains hanging off the cliff.

"Jack..." I breathe out with fear, slowly stepping closer.

"Stay where you are, sweetheart," Jack firmly replies, looking up at me as he nervously grins. "I'll get out of this."

"How?!" His sister yells, looking down in fear.

"Yep. Working on that!"

"Go get your mother and maybe some rope, okay?" I frantically instruct, making her nod and quickly hug me before rushing off. "How do we fix this?" I whimper, going onto my knees as I look down at him.

He was about two feet below me, hanging on a flimsy branch. Down below was a thin layer of water, most of it gone from the tides pulling out. He was leaning over to check how deep it was to see if he could dive in, when his foot slipped. Luckily, he got the tree root sticking out of the cliffside. But his arm got scratched up pretty badly and the tree root was weak.

"Jack, I can reach you--" I stammer out, my voice wavering a bit as I move closer.

"No! No, no, no." Jack frantically replies, shaking his head as he adjusts his grip on the branch. "It's way too dangerous, sweetheart.

"But you'll fall, Jack!" I yell with fear, making him grunt as he nearly loses his grip.

"I promise you, (Y/N). I will get out of this. I will get back to you, because I love you with all my heart," he gently replies, grinning up at me reassuringly before hissing as his hand slips off. He quickly grabs the branch with his bad arm, gasping and switching hands as he allows his bad arm to drop.

"Yes... you will get out of this." I whisper to myself, falling onto the floor on my stomach.

I grab the cliff with one hand, swiftly reaching for Jack just as the branch snaps. He yells before gasping as I grab his hand, digging my fingers into the cliff as I nearly slide off from the weight of holding him and myself up.

"Sweetheart!" He gasps, his eyes wide as I strain to keep my grip.

"Okay, okay, she should be back any minute to help," I mumble to myself, my grip tight on Jack as he looks for a way out. "You're gonna be fine, Jack! I won't let you go. I love you, okay? You'll be fine!"

"(Y/N), listen to me, you have to let me go!" Jack replies sternly with concern and fear, shaking his head. "My weight is going to pull both of us and we'll fall!"

"No," I firmly reply, shaking my head before exhaling deeply, preparing myself. "Okay, here we go."

I grunt and Jack hisses in pain as I start to pull him up, my adrenaline rushing through my veins as my strength wavers a bit.

"Come on, come on!" I mumble to myself, gasping as my hand nearly slips from the cliff. "Can you grab the cliff, yet? Can you move your arm?"

"I think so," he grunts in pain looking at his injured arm.

Jack yelps and starts reaching for the cliff as I pull him higher, the feeling of my body falling becoming stronger. He grabs the cliff, making me lightly sigh in relief as some of the weight was taken off my other hand. He starts pulling himself up with some struggles, and I hear a girl yelling in the distance and Jack's mom crying out.

I let go of the cliff, grabbing Jack's shirt with my hand as I pull him up and onto the cliff, my ears ringing and my face hot. Time seemed to slow... And I felt my body slip from the cliff.

Jack's eyes were wide as he looks back, reaching for me as he yells my name.

My hair flies in the wind as I reach for Jack, tears in my eyes as I realize... I was about to die. But at least I was able to save him.

"(Y/N)--!!" Jack yells with horror, his eyes wide and filled with tears as his hand reaches for me.

"I love you!" I scream back, smiling as tears pool down my face as my body falls from the cliff.

...

I float around in the dark water, my back aching and my brain foggy. A small voice was telling me to wake up, and calling me 'Cupid, (Y/N) (L/N)'.

"Sweetheart... Sweetheart... (Y/N)!!"

I awake with a gasp, bright wings sprouting from my back and a bow appearing in the water next to me as I look around,

...

And from that moment on... I was Cupid.
