Chapter 983
Sweet Subterfuge
Kevan looked up and locked eyes with Larissa. âCome here.â He reached out for her and spoke in a very soft voice.
Larissa went over to hold his hand tightly.
His hand was cold as usual and it was actually colder as the thermostat in the hall was not turned on.
Larissa said nothing, and she did not ask either.
She only straightened up and stood next to Kevan.
Together, they accepted the respects paid by the guests.
Kevanâs network of connections was too big.
There were so many guests that the funeral service only officially ended by the evening.
Larissa had stood with Kevan for a very long time, and she was wearing heels. Moreover, she had not drunk any water at all through the service, but she did not feel temible.
It was likely because the pain she felt mentally was greater than the pain she felt physically, so her whole body was numb.
âWill you keep vigil tonight?â Larissa asked Kevan Bethanyâs body would be buried tomorrow. It would be placed here tonight.
Kevan shook his head. âNo.â
Bethany was not his real daughter. She was only a child that he was a little bit more familiar with compared to a stranger. This funeral service was only held because his parents had insisted on it.
âAre you tired?â Kevan asked Larissa with his eyes lilled with concern.
âJust a little hungry,â Larissa finally sensed the pain in her stomach. âLetâs go eat somewhere.â
âOkay,â Kevan led her out of the hall.
Larissa turned back to see Anthony, who remained in the hall. She asked, âIs Mr. Rogers not leaving?â
âMy dad wants to keep vigil.â Kevanâs voice was calm. âAlthough Bethany was not his real granddaughter, she is still a Rogers. My Uncle Bernardâs family is gone, so he can only put up a front for him.â
âWhat about Cody? Heâs Bethanyâs real dad. He didnât even show up at a time like this?
Larissa knew that Kevanâs Uncle Bernard had been sentenced for exploiting minors. Alter that, Edmund had been jailed for causing trouble in Westonia, Aunt Maria went to cause trouble at the Rogers family home and ended up getting sent into a psychiatric hospital. The only person left was Bethanyâs real lather, Cody.
âCodyâs dead,â Kevan said calmly like he was talking about the weather.
âWhat?â This shocked Larissa. âWhen? Why didnât I see this on the news?â
She got criticized by Lewis and Wendy for not caring about Caldorian news. Thus, Larissa developed a habit of scrolling through Instagram before bed to see there was anything big happening in Caldor.
She saw that Soaring Corporation was completely bankrupt, and saw how Cody lelt the building with his tail tucked between his legs. But she never saw anything about Codyâs death.
âIt was just two days ago, and itâs not something glorious, so I kept it quiet.â Kevan did not want to talk more about this, so he changed the subject. âWhat do you want to eat? After that, we can go to my momâs place and bring Aster home.â
As expected, Larissaâs attention was distracted the moment Aster was mentioned.
âIs Aster okay? And Mrs. Rogers.â
Kevan lelt nothing for Bethany, so he could be very calm in the face of her death, But Violet was different. She had truly raised Bethany for +15 BONOS Larissa could not Imagine how badly Violet had suffered because of Bethanyâs death.
âAsterâs fine. We didnât tell him, and he doesnât need to know anyway. As for my mom- Kevan was silent for a few seconds. âSheâs very sad. But she needed to take care of Aster, so she did not come to the service today. Weâll bring Aster home today, and she can send Bethany off tomorrow morning.â
âOkay.â Larissa sighed softly. âI take care of Aster tomorrow. You should send Bethany off too. After all she called you âDacdy for so many years.â
Bethany was the most innocent one in this whole mess. No matter the motives her real parents had when they gave birth to her, and no matter how her real parents had lied to her, Kevan was still her real father in her heart.
âTwonât go.â Kevanâs expression remained unchanged, but his hand lightened around Larissaâs. I canât bear to face her.â
