Chapter 912
Sweet Subterfuge
Due to the recent pandemic in Caldor, many international trades with Caldor had reduced greatly. Blue Star Shipping had naturally received many order cancellations too.
The company was in a sad state. Many departments were spreading rumors about a major employee layoff. Larissa specifically tried to verify this with Lewis.
Lewis kept working overtime this week, and he looked worse than usual âWe do have plans to lay off some people, but it canât be considered âmajor.â He sounded tired as well as heartbroken and resigned.
âLay off the employees based on performance then! Our company has always had this system, it was just that our performance was good before and we were able to take care of so many employees, that was why we never enforced this system properly.
âNow that the company is in trouble, those who are not working properly should be kicked out.â
âDonât look like thatâLewis was amused by Larissaâs worried frown. He even teased her. âThe sky hasnât even fallen yet!â
âCaldorâs government is controlling the pandemic well, so it probably wonât be long before business resumes over there. Think positive.
our company is not the only one affected by thisâI hear that Moorewell has gotten canceled orders too.â
âOur losses have got to be bigger than Moorewell, right?â Larissa was not the least bit comforted by Lewisâ words.
As Gary was a proper born and bred Caldorian, most of Blue Star Shippingâs clients were Kyminian companies, and there was a great deal of Caldorian companies among those numbers.
Moorewell Shipping was the exact opposite of Blue StarâTheir cargo ships only traveled between Aldovia and Epoth, so losing orders from Kymin was not a big deal for them.
âThis is only temporary.â Lewis was rather confident though. âIt wonât be long before the virus spreads all over Epoth and Aldovia. Moorewell will only be worse than we are by then.â
Larissa did not know where Lewisâ blind confidence came from.
âIf the virus spreads in Epoth and Aldovia arenât we goners as well?â
âDo you never pay attention to Caldorian news? Lewis gave Larissa a look, âOther than the city that had the first viral outbreak, the viral cases in other places back home are actually going down. Once those cities have their lockdowns lifted and resumed business, our orders will go back up again.â
âDonât look at the single digit numbers reported by Epath and Aldovia now for their confirmed viral cases, if the government and people donât treat this matter seriously, they may only be worse than Caldor in the end.â
Larissaâs friends and family were all in Aldovia, so she paid less attention to the news back in Caldor.
She only knew that Caldorâs economy had practically stopped due to the spread of some new viral disease. She did not pay attention to the progress of the epidemic. so she knew even less of the things that Lewis talked about.
âActually-âLewis spoke slowly. âUncle Gary and I have been thinking about moving the company back to Caldor. But thatâs not something that can be done so easily, especially at a time like this.â He sighed softly.
âIâm just letting you know beforehand so you are prepared. As for whether or not the move will happen, we will have to see what our income is like for the second half of the year.â
Larissa lett Lewisâ office with a bad expression on her face. Marilyn asked her quietly, âDid Mr. Logan Junior scold you?â
Larissa forced a smile but did not reply.
âI plan to treat Mr. Logan Junior for a meal today.â Manlyn ran over to Larissaâs workplace, grabbed a chair and sat next to her. She asked, â Is M. Logan Junior still busy now?â
It was already Friday today, and it was long past working hours. There were still many people in the presidential office, probably because. the employees were scared by the news of the major laying off or they were affected by the frequent working overtime of their two bosses.
However, the moment Larissa finished speaking. Lewisâ ollice door opened Lewis stepped out with his briefcase and suit jacket. He looked like he was ready to go off work, Walking over to Larissaâs table, he asked, âWant to go grab dinner?â
He stared right at Larissa, making her feel panicked. Larissa turned automatically to look at Marilyn, whose face was frozen as she stared blankly somewhere with her head down.
âFuck!â Larissa wailed to herself on the inside.
