Chapter 549
Sweet Subterfuge
Chapter 549
Ruby leaned in, trying to grab Kevanâs hand that was resting on the table. He quickly evaded her grasp, casting his gaze downward to conceal the disqust in his eyes. He then repeated, âIâm sorry.â
âIs it because of Larissa? Itâs because of her, right? Her expression turned vicious. âThal bi tch must have said something to you! Donât believe her! She wants me dead! Sheâs a vile woman!â
If it werenât for the unfinished business, Kevan would have immediately stood up and left; the air seemed to turn foul wherever she was.
âIt has nothing to do with anyone.â He forcefully suppressed his anger and pushed his phone toward her. âI came to see you today for this.
Her attention was diverted. She stared at his phone, looking perplexed, and asked, âWhat about it?â
He played the video for her to watch. Her expression only showed subtle changes, and her initial reaction wasnât as panicked as a typical mother would be. Half a minute later, she exclaimed. âWhat happened to Bethany? Whatâs going on?â
Kevan replied. âShe has been kidnapped. The kidnappers are demanding a ransom of one billion dollars.â
Ruby anxiously exclaimed. âThen, pay the ransom and get her back! You can afford one billion, right?â
He remained silent for a few seconds and lowered his voice, saying, âI canât.â
âYouâre lying!â She stomped her foot in frustration. âHow can you not afford? Microworks Corporation is such a big company! Youâve even boasted about a fortune of hundreds of billions!â
âI really canât afford itâ Kevan said earnestly. He rubbed his face with his hands and let out a defeated sigh. âI experienced investment
failures and lost a considerable amount of money.â
She asked in a demanding tone, âWhat about Bethany, then? Are you just going to stand there and watch her die? Sheâs your daughter!â She clutched her chest, crying inconsolably. âAre you really that heartless?â
He closed his eyes upon hearing that and spoke with a mournful lone. âI-I feel sorry for you and Bethany. If there is such a thing as another life. I hope you both never have to encounter someone like me.â
After he said that, he hastily left the room before Ruby could further confront him. As soon as the door closed, his expression vanished
without a trace.
âYou can go inside now,â he said to the prison guard standing outside the door.
His driver was waiting outside the detention center. âMr. Rogers, where are we going next? the driver asked.
âFind a secluded spot nearby and wait,â he instructed. He looked out the window, gripping his phone in his hand.
The driver parked the car in a desolate comer where no one passed by. Kevan sat inside the car, with a clear view of the prison gate. He patiently bided his time. Finally, after over two hours of walling, a flashy red Ferrari roared by, screeching to a halt at the main entrance of the detention center. Kevan recognized the car-it was the new Ferrari modell released this year, and Cody happened to own one.
The car door swung open, and a figure stepped out from the driverâs seat. Kevan locused his gaze and found that the person was indeed Cody. Cody spent nearly an hour inside the detention center before coming out. Kevan couldnât discern Codyâs expression from a distance, since Cody kept his head lowered and waked somewhat hastly.
When the red sports car sped away, Kevan instructed the driver, âLetâs go home.â
