Chapter 518
Sweet Subterfuge
Larissa had never met her biological father before. By the time she was old enough to remember, Yvette was already with Xavier.
She could only piece together a vague image of her latherâs appearance from Yvelleâs poor descriptions.
âHeâs an incompetent piece of trash.â Perhaps he was skinny and meek.
âHe was always tongueâtied and clumsy.â Maybe he was a silent and introverted man who always doubled himself, âHeâs a freeloader who couldnât eam a penny by himself. He depends on women to pay his bills.â He probably dressed in the simplest clothes, maybe even a bit sloopy.
In short, he was net particularly impressive or goodâlooking.
However, Larissa always had an inkling that Yvette was not telling the truth. Just because they didnât share a close relationship didnât mean she didnât understand her.
Yvette was vain and materialistic, and if her biological father was truly as unbearable as she had described. Yvette would never have married him in the first place.
Then again, perhaps Yvette had become like that because of her failed manlage. Nonetheless, it did not diminish Larissaâs longing for her father.
Even though Yvelte had told her countless times that her father had died somewhere in the middle of the sea, she still clung to the hope that her father would one day rescue her from the cruel Seymour family. That hope carried her through those long, frustrating days, preventing her from completely losing her mind and going astray.
She had suffered so much, which was why she always did her best to be good to Aster, to make up for the lack of fatherly love in his life. At the same time, however, she was well aware that for a child, a father was irreplaceable. That was why she couldnât ignore Asterâs demands.
âI often blamed my mother.â Larissa said. âIf she had cared more about my feelings, perhaps I would be much happier now.â
âYour mother ⦠Is she not good to you?â Gary asked, his voice trembling.
He could actually imagine it. Since Yvelle hated him deeply, she wouldnât treat their daughter with any kindness.
However, hearing Larissa say it in person intensilied the pain he felt.
âGive me a moment.â Gary quickly reached into his pocket and took out some medication, swallowing a pill without water.
Larissaâs scrrow was immediately replaced by worry, and she asked anxiously. âDo you need a doctor?â
Gary waved her away. Despite that, his brows lurcwed together, his complexion turning a sickly color and his body was trembling with.
pain. Fortunately, it didnât last too long, just a few minutes, and his condition gradually returned to normal âYou still havenât answered my question,â he struggled to say, sweat covering his forehead. âIs your mother not good to you?
Larissa had no Intention of continuing the conversation with him as his condition worried her greatly.
âLetâs talk about that later,â she said. âLet me get the doctor to check on you again.â
However, Gary refused.
âIm fine.â he insisted. âJust tell me. Im all ears.â
Larissa had no choice but to return to her seal.
âMy mother,â she began to say with a bitter laugh, âI can only say that she fulfilled the duties of a mother and raised me to adulthood.â
However, the lile she put Larissa through fell worse than hell.
âSome people might think Iâm an ungrateful wretch, but I genuinely have never thanked her lor it.â
âIâm sorry.â Tears welled up in Garyâs eyes.
