Chapter 494
Sweet Subterfuge
Larissa thought she was seeing things when she saw Kevan through the peephole of the door. She wondered why was the here instead of at Rolandâs funeral service. She opened the door with confusion and asked after sling up Kevan from head to toe, âDo you need something?â
He appeared unusually calm, and there was not a hint of sadness in his deepâsel eyes, as if he was unaffected by the passing of his grandfather.
She was about to give him her condolences, but she swallowed back her words since there was no need for them in his case.
âMy mom said you went to the funeralâ Kevan watched her carefully. She looked normal, not as heartbroken or lost as Aster had described, which put his mind at ease.
Larissa hummed in acknowledgment and waited for him to continue.
âA lot was going on at the time, so my mom didnât have time to see you off. Sheâs very sorry about it.â
He couldnât sell Aster out so he made up an excuse, and continued, âIâm here to thank you and apologize on behalf of her.â
âItâs alright, she was being too kind.â Larissa smiled.
Kevan smiled back and chuckled. âAs long as youâre not bothered by itâ
The two fell into an awkward silence, and locked eyes for a moment before Larissa asked. âAre you alright?â
Kevan lowered his gaze, trying to hide his emotions, and said in a light and hoarse voice. âI donât feel much. As far as I know, the day my grandfather passed away was the first time I saw him.â
In other words, his grandfather was a complete stranger to him. Larissa was at a loss for words. Words of comfort were unnecessary, and other topics were inappropriate in this situation âDo you need to see your grandfather now?â she tried to change the subject.
Kevan was quite reluctant to go. He would only be subjected to the scrutiny of the Rogers family and he had to constantly keep his guard up to avoid exposing his flaws. I was just too tiring.
The news of his grandfatherâs passing and the torment from the high fever had already thoroughly worn him out. Right now, all he wanted was to find a quiet place and vent his emotions.
âNo, I wonât go.â He forced a bitter smile. 1 donât feel a sense of belonging there, and only be reprimanded by my uncles and aunts for being coldâblooded and heartless.â
He spoke casually, but it made Larissa feel extremely uncomfortable. He was not a bad person, hence he didnât need to bear such a bad reputation.
âIf youâre free, you can play with Aster for a while. He wants to play a game, but Iâm not very good at it.â
She pursed her lips and lifted her gaze to meet his.
Kevan was worried about not having an excuse he could use to stay, so naturally, he agreed in a heartbeat when she made this offer. âOf course, no problem,â
Aster immediately jumped and cheered when he heard about this from the living room. âOh yeah!â
Kevan and Aster sat crossâlegged on the living room Noor, playing games while Larissa cul some hult for the two of them, brought out all the snacks she had hidden in the house, and placed them next to Kevan Aster watched with envy and said sulky. âMommy treats Uncle Kevan better than me.â
Kevan was very amused and the comers of his mouthed.
Larissa glared at Aster Indignantly and pinched his ear, asking âAm I not nice to you?â
âYouâre the best Aster hurriedly replied. When Larissa let go of his ear, he pouted and said in a low voice, âShe forbids me from eating any handed it over. âGo ahead,â
