Chapter 281
Sweet Subterfuge
Chapter 281
âKevan! Come and take a seat!â Cody smiled and beckoned to him.
Kevan complied, calling out, âCody.â
âKevan â¦â Ruby also greeted him, her voice soft and gentle. With a smile, she continued, âYouâre back?â Her smile carried a hint of flattery.
Kevan did not sit beside Cody. Instead, he led Larissa to take a seat on the other side of Roland.
Finally, Cody turned his attention to Larissa and inquired, âAnd who might this be?â
Kevan replied. âThis is my wife, Larissa Seymour.â
Larissa smiled at Cody and nodded. At the same time, she caught a glimpse of Rubyâs face, which had turned pale.
Cody acted surprised and questioned, âWhen did you get married? Why didnât you tell us about it?â
He wore an unhappy expression and continued, âDo you consider us as outsiders?â
Kevan simply replied, âWe had just gotten married. We have the marriage certificates but havenât had the wedding ceremony yet.â
Roland sneered and added, âI only found out not long ago too.â
After hearing that, Cody relented and said, âMake sure to inform us when the wedding ceremony is held!â
âOf course.â Kevan smiled.
Then, Roland asked, âYou guys are done with the pie?â
âNo. We heard that my cousins had arrived, so we came out to say hello. Otherwise, Edmund might accuse us of having bad manners.â
Edmund laughed and responded, âIâm not that petty.â
Kevan didnât react.
âSince youâve greeted them, you can go ahead and continue making the pie,â Roland dismissed them.
Larissa got up, and Ruby followed suit. The latter suggested, âLet me help too.â
Larissa looked at Kevan, silently signaling her refusal. However, Kevan remained still and merely responded, âOkay.â
At that moment, Larissa really wanted to leave. Still, she endured it and smiled at Ruby, saying, âThank you, but itâs fine.â
After that, she forcefully pulled Kevan up from his chair and added, âKevan and I can deal with it.â
But Kevan pushed her hand away and sat back. âGo with Ruby. I want to chat with Cody and Edmund for a while.â
Larissa glared at him and went to the kitchen with Ruby. Since Kevan had chopped up the ingredients, she just had to mix and season
them.
âDo you know how to make pastry?â Larissa asked Ruby.
Ruby nodded and took over Larissaâs previous task. Then, they got on with their work and did not disturb each other. However, Ruby broke
the silence after a while and asked, âHow did you and Kevan meet?â
The way she said Kevanâs name was similar to how Kevan called her, filled with a sense of intimacy that made Larissa envious.
âDuring work, Larissa replied coldly.
âHow long have you known each other?â Ruby continued to ask.
âNot very long⦠Larissa thought about it carefully. âIt hasnât been half a year.â
âNot even half a year?â Ruby seemed to become proud.
âIâve known Kevan for more than seven years.â
Larissa felt a strong urge to roll her eyes and sarcastically ask, âSo?â However, her manners didnât allow her to do such a thing. Instead, she said, âYou two must be good friends.â
She deliberately emphasized the word friend.â As expected, the smile on Rubyâs face froze.
