Chapter 35

In the Eyes of the Wolf

Chapter 35

-Pax-

I didn't shift back into my human form, there would be no use in it. I growled in the direction of Cedar's voice, my body low and ready to lung if necessary.

"No need to be like that, Pax. Just sit tight," Cedar said with amusement in his voice. "This is all part of the plan."

Iris nudged me with her nose. She was right, there's no need for violence. Although, I couldn't tell if Cedar was in front of, or behind the bars which had closed on us.

I circled Iris and stood on her other side. I wasn't going to sit down, that would slow me down if I had to jump.

Cedar didn't say anything, he just clicked something. It was annoying, but nothing in comparison to using a whistle to hurt my ears.

I knew Cedar, and I knew that he was waiting for the perfect opportunity to tell us his entire plan. Though, he lasted longer than I thought he would.

"So, what've you been doing the past few days?" he asked. "I must admit you got better at lying."

I shrugged my shoulders the best a wolf could, but I felt a tinge of pride that I had managed to fool him.

"This is frustrating," Cedar stated. "Talking to a wolf is rather meaningless. It's a one-way conversation which doesn't go anywhere."

I huffed a laugh at his annoyance, it just made me happier to be in my wolf form.

Cedar yelled in pain before a loud bang came from the bars. I scrambled backwards, hitting the wall with my back. I didn't know what was happening. Growls and whines which I didn't recognise met my ears, along with more bashing.

Iris nudged me again, more desperate this time. She took some of the fur on the back of my head between her teeth and pulled. It hurt, but I got the message.

I scrambled to my paws and followed her. The bars were no longer there. I followed Iris closely, allowing her to show me where to go.

That was until she abruptly stopped, making me run straight into her. She started to creep forwards, practically silent.

Voices were clear through the tunnel, if not a bit echoey. I recognised them immediately to be Finn's, Daphne's, and Kian's. I'd recognise those voices anywhere.

"Why? It's...why?" Kian's voice sounded broken. "What's wrong with what we were doing?"

"Taking over all the packs? Trying to become king of all wolves?" Daphne asked with a scoff. "What's right with it? You destroyed my family."

"I didn't agree with it at first," Finn said. "Until you proposed to her. Kian, why didn't you see that you were willing to go too far?"

I blinked a few times. They were talking about Alora. Kian had proposed to her and she'd accepted, that was a few days before she was announced dead.

"How do you know that it was just for the plan?" Kian asked shakily. "How do you know?"

"You're a terrible liar," Finn said. "We all know that it was because of greed, You didn't love her."

"You'll never know," Kian replied. "You'll never know that for certain."

Kian took Alora's death terribly, it wasn't difficult for me to believe that he loved her somehow. Whether it was a romantic relationship or platonic.

"No. We won't." A bang and a scream filled the air as Daphne finished her sentence. "Where'd they go?" Daphne asked.

I didn't get time to think about what was happening, as I was suddenly being pulled in another direction. Our paws hit the ground and echoed through the tunnels. I didn't know who was with me, or who was pulling me, but I knew that I could trust them.

"Get the black wolf!" Finn shouted.

Footsteps came from ahead of us. A growl escaped someone's throat and I felt pressure on my head, pushing me backwards. I scratched at their sides and bit at their neck, hoping that my aim was good enough.

We fought for a few moments, they managed a large bite into my side, but I managed to scratch their face and their shoulder. Their grip loosened and I was able to slither out of their hold. I followed the noise of the other wolves fighting and fought anyone who came for me.

I wished that I could help more, fighting those who were attacking my friends, but I couldn't tell who was who in such a small space. I was scared to hurt someone who was on my side. It didn't help the fact I was unsure who was here.

A whine reached my ears, one which I recognised. It wasn't someone from Kian's pack, but I recognised it because my body trembled. I wanted to whine in response to the sad noise. I darted in the direction of the whine, barrelling into wolves and breaking fights apart to get to Farley.

I knocked the wolf, who was digging his claws into Farley's side, off him. My teeth immediately went for his neck. I used as much strength as I could and channelled it to my front paws, breaking whatever part of their body I could.

It didn't take long for them to die.

I moved back to Farley, nuzzling his face and feeling to see if he had any more injuries. His side was wet and sticky, his blood matting his fur. He whined again, flinching away from my touch.

He was moved away from me and I was about to growl when Caspian spoke, "it's okay. I'm going to carry him. It'll be quicker. Just follow our footsteps."

I reluctantly nodded and followed the sound of steps through the tunnel. We were going at the speed of a jog. I would've preferred to go quicker, but Farley was the main priority. Finn or Daphne could be gaining on us.

I suppose the hunt for the black wolf has commenced.

We ran and we didn't stop until we reached the edge of the forest. I started to lead the way halfway through the run, not exactly knowing where I was going, but avoiding the trees became easy due to the lighting. As soon as I felt any shade or coldness, I darted to the side.

"Stop," Caspian demanded.

I skidded to a stop and turned around. I waited for something to happen, but nothing did. Something was laid on the forest floor, causing a vibration to reach my paws.

I shuffled forward, sniffing the ground until I got to Farley.

I whined involuntarily and lay my head down near his. His hair tickled my nose slightly, but I didn't care as I rested there. I wouldn't be of any help at the moment. He was bleeding heavily from his side and his breathing was shallow.

"We need to get him some help," Iris said from the other side of Farley. "We can put pressure on his wound, that'll help, but he needs medical attention."

"We don't have anyone to give him medical attention," Clementine responded. "We don't know any doctors."

Rustling came from my right and Rowan spoke, "didn't his mother used to be a doctor? Or his dad?" Clanging and grunting came from his direction too,

My head lifted. We could get them hare, that would fix it.

"Give me the leash, that might help," Iris said.

The clanging continued and shifted from Rowan's side to Iris. Farley was jerked from my touch for a second and then put back.

"We won't be able to get Brin here in time," Caspian explained. "It would be useless. They don't know where we are."

I jumped up and strode over to him, looking up to where I assumed he was. His voice was coming from this direction anyway.

"What if you had one of the fastest wolves going to bring them?" Rowan asked.

"Rowan, you're not quick enough, and -" Clementine was interrupted by Rowan.

"I wasn't talking about me." There was a moment of silence.

I huffed, I wanted to know what was going on. Air moving next to my face made me tense, but it mustn't have been anything alarming.

"Pax?" Clementine asked, causing my attention to turn to her. "I'm not sure that's a good idea. He does look very much like a wolf."

"So? Wolves can't be that rare in England," Rowan asked.

A frustrated groan came from Caspian. "We need a doctor," he said in defeat. "Pax, please be as quick as you can, stick to the shadows."

I nodded my head. I didn't know where I was, but I'd be able to get back to the city, apparently.

I darted down the road, in the direction of faint noise. Farley's parents had a certain scent, as everyone does. I was able to figure out that Lana spent too much time in the garden and that Brin was the one who did the majority of the cleaning. The issue was, many other people had the same scent combinations.

I raced through the streets, concentrating on my sense of smell until I got to a road, then hearing was my focus. Hearing was far superior when it came to figuring out if there were any vehicles on the road.

I hoped that Mary was outside, or someone was looking through the window as I ran down streets, trying to find something familiar. I cursed myself for not paying closer attention when I came through the city the first time.

I avoided footsteps whenever I could, a few barks came my way, but I ignored them.

That was until I got to a very familiar location. The gym was very close. I was out int he open for anybody to see, but I knew where I was going now.

I sped up, becoming more careless as I raced the streets. I bumped into a few people, but darted around them before they could do anything. I managed to find the correct street, then the correct house.

"Pax, oh thank God. What is it?" Mary asked as she opened the door. I bolted inside and went straight to Brinn, grabbing his trousers with my teeth and pulling.

"What happened?" Brin asked.

I just continued to pull on his leg until Lana spoke, "I think he wants you to go with him."

"I figured that," Brin said and stood up, causing me to lose my grip on his trousers. "Lead the way." I turned around to leave the room again, accidentally walking into the coffee table.

"Wait," Lana said. "Take your bag with you, just in case." I'm assuming the bag was on the floor, and she picked it up to hand it to him. "Be safe, we'll follow right behind."

"I will," Brin promised. "Right, Pax, lead the way again."

I nodded and ran out of the house, my pace would be slower with Brin following, but he was surprisingly fast.

We stopped once to let Brin catch his breath, but that was brief and we were back on track not a moment later.

It was easy enough to track myself, for when my memory failed me and I didn't know which direction to go in. I didn't know why I hadn't been followed, but I thanked my lucky stars that it was the case.

"Brin!" Rowan shouted from around twenty feet in front of me. "Farley needs help."

We sped up, me nearly crashing into Clementine.

"Oh my god, what happened to my boy?" Brin asked as he put his back down on the forest floor with a 'thump'. He opened the zip and took out some supplies which smelled like alcohol mixed with some herbs I didn't recognise.

I shuffled away from him and went to Farley's other side so that I didn't get in Brin's way.

"Well, he was kidnapped as you know, Then he...we don't really know," Rowan said with defeat. "The injuries happened when we were trying to escape, from a tunnel we were being kept in."

"What's that ring around your neck?" Brin asked, not looking up from the floor.

"They put a leash on him," Iris growled. She sounded angrier then I had ever heard her.

I didn't blame her though. Having a leash put on you is a dreadfully embarrassing and dehumanising experience. I had no experience with it personally, but I was threatened with it more times than I could count on my fingers and toes, when in human form.

"It'll fade," Rowan said almost desperately. "It's fine."

"It is not fine," Iris exclaimed.

"Farley, can you hear me?" Brin interrupted the twin's blooming argument.

Farley groaned and moved his head. "Yes," he muttered almost inaudibly.

I lowered myself to my stomach and placed my head next to his, almost nuzzling into his neck.

"You've got some long gashes on your stomach, they'll need stitches." Brin continued. "I need you to stay very still for me, okay?"

Farley hummed and turned his head, his nose by my ear. His shoulders slumped and he didn't move. "Pax?" he asked.

I didn't know how to respond to him in my wolf form, so a little whine was the best I could do. A hand landed in between my ears, stroking downwards towards my nose. I was as still as a statue.

"That's just Farley," Clementine said softly. "Seems like you're pretty distracting." She chuckled.

I tried to deny the fuzzy feeling that I got in my chest when I heard this. Farley's touch was gentle, as though he was afraid to break me if he put too much pressure on my head.

I lifted my head and licked his hand. He chuckled but continued to pet me. "Your fur is soft," he said. He must be delirious from the blood-loss he had experienced.

"Get a person who looks at you the same way Farley looks at Pax," Rowan muttered.

Hello lovelies!

I hope that you're doing well :D

Question of the chapter is; do you like wearing sunglasses?

Wow, these questions are getting strange. I didn't used to bother with sunglasses, because my glasses go dark when it's sunny outside. However, I do have some glasses which I can put over mine, which act like a sort of sunglasses. It doesn't make much difference after a while, but I used them a few times. They're not very comfortable around my ears though :c
