By the time Giselle was discharged from the hospital, Xanderâs finals were long gone. Fortunately, that meant that he had time for his sister, and to Giselle, that was all she needed.
âPiggy-back?â Giselle asked, tugging on the hem of my shirt.
Her head was turned towards my direction, but her eyes were covered with several layers of bandage.
I was about to agree when Xander patted my head and gently pushed me aside.
Iâll do it, he mouthed, and I nodded, feeling slightly disappointed because Iâve always wanted to give piggy-backs.
âCome on Giselle,â Xander lifted her arms and guided them over his shoulders, âIâll give youââ
âNoooo I want Chocolate Chip!â She pouted unhappily, and I couldnât help but smile.
âI-Itâs okay Xan, Iâm strong enough!â I patted my abs (thereâs nothing there honestly, but oh well).
Xander stared.
Then he snorted, giving me one of his best smiles. âAngel, Iâve seen every part of youâand Iâm sure thereâs nothing there the last time I checked.â
I felt my cheeks burn and the tips of my ears grow hot.
âW-Whaâdonât say that out loud!â
âWhat? Itâs the truth,â Xander smirked.
âB-But thatâs unââ
âWant me to describe? Slim, supple thighs; the perfect waistââ
âCHOCOLATE PIGGYBACK!! XANDIE GO AWAAAY!â
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
In the end, Giselle settled with holding our handsâso here I was, holding Giselleâs left hand while Xander held her right.
We were about to exit the ward when I heard a familiar voice.
âWaitâare you sure this is the room?â
âYes Blake, Iâve checked it a thousand timesâstop nagging!â
âWhat? Iâm just making sure! What ifââ
The door opened.
In the doorway stood a group of high school students. I recognized some of them from the time I sat with Xander at his table in the cafeteria.
âHey! Xander! We heard about your sisterâ¦â Blake trailed off when he saw Giselle. âWait is that her? Shit sheâs so cute! Hi, my name isââ
âNo way Iâm gonna let my sister get to know the likes of a dirty guy like you Blake,â Xander got between Giselle and his captain jokingly, and the group laughed.
âWe brought fruits and chocolate though,â One of the girls said.
âAre we too late?â
âLetâs sit outside thenââ
âWhat? Since when were you guys nice?â Xander raised an eyebrow mockingly.
His friends stared at him like he was crazy.
âSince, like, forever,â Then they rolled their eyes simultaneously.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
As usual, no one seemed to notice meâwell maybe they did, but they chose not to talk to me, and it was fine that way.
Phew.
I was busy peeling a banana for Giselle, who waited patiently next to me, when Xanderâs friends suddenly stopped talking.
Curious, I turned around.
That was when I caught sight of a very hot pink mini-skirt and an expensive leather jacket.
Well, and the only person who could possibly wear that was Vicky.
âVicky, wait up!â A certain voice called, and a teenaged boy came jogging after her with a huge hamper in his arms.
Oh! Itâs Ace!
âUgh, Ace, canât you hurry up a little? So useless. Heyâisnât it this room? Itâs not? Why is it not this room? It should be this room. Itâs not either? Why is it not this room?â
Vicky opened door after door, a rather silly look on her face as she tried to figure her way around.
One of Xanderâs friends broke the ice.
âIs thatâ¦?â
âVicky?â
âYeah.â
âYou know, the one who goes crazy in every party?â
âYeah, thatâs her.â
They turned back to stare.
Xander just buried his head in his hands, as if wishing this was just a dream.
.
âUmmmâ¦Vicky? I think we should ask the information counterâ¦â Ace pointed out, but Vicky simply ignored her brother.
She scanned the floor, and then she noticed us.
She pointed and shouted loudly. âThere they are!â
The nurses and doctors around turned to stare at her angrily, but Vicky didnât seem to care (or even notice).
She stalked over to the row of chairs in her heeled boots, flipping her hair along the way.
Ace hurried after her.
After glancing at every single member of the group except me, she opened her mouth to speak.
âWell, hi. My brother and I have heard about Xanderâs sister. I shouldnât careâI donât really. But since he insisted,â She jabbed a finger at Ace, âWe have come to wish Xanderâs sister well.â
She checked her perfectly manicured fingers.
âHurry up Ace, I donât have time.â
But Ace was staring at Xander.
âOh huh? What? Oh yeahâUm, here,â He said shyly, handing the huge hamper to Xander. âThis is for you and your sister.â
Ace turned to Giselle, intending to greet her, but he stopped short.
âU-Umâ¦â He lowered his voice, âwhy are her eyes bandaged?â
Everyone was silent for a while, until Vicky had to open her mouth.
ââCuz she donât have eyes now, duh.â
Xander looked like he was ready to cut off her tongue.
âOh my God, you didnât have to say that!â A girl snapped.
âCan you just shut up?â
âWhat the hell!â
âAh, Iâm so sorry guys, my sisterâs like thatââ
âWhat?â Vicky shrugged. âI think she looks better like that honestly.â
âAt least you canât see her crossed eyes,â She added.
There was a moment of silence.
Everyone seemed just too shocked to respond to such a comment.
I was white with anger, but that anger seemed to cloud my thoughts.
It was Giselle who responded.
âDuck?â
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Xanderâs friends left soon after Vicky and Ace arrived, leaving Xander, Giselle and I alone in the hospitalâwaiting for Rose and Loki to come pick us up.
âCan I eat ten cupcakes?â Giselle asked, tugging on my hand which she held tight.
Xander squeezed her other hand, and spoke sternly. âThatâs too many. Only three maximum! The doctor says that you should watch your diet for the next few weeks.â
âBesides,â He added gently, âwe shouldnât bother Chipâs familyâ¦â
I shook my head quickly, âN-No! Itâs a bother at all Xanââ
A kiss on my lips left me speechless, and the words at the tip of my tongue disappeared.
âU-Uwa! Xander, weâre outsideâ¦â
âSorry,â He laughed, âJust had to help myself,â He replied playfully, licking his lips.
I felt like a living heater, and someone just turned on the switch.
My face was getting hotter and hotter by the second.
âU-Umâ¦â
.
âAre you the brat that called me?â Came a low voice behind, and I jumped.
Before I turned around, I saw Xanderâs shoulders stiffenâand I knew this couldnât possibly be good.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The man that stood in front of me was dressed smartly in an expensive business suit and silk tie.
His shoes were really, really shinyâ
And I couldnât help but think that he must have been really attractive when he was younger.
In fact, he had a domineering air that matched Xanderâs.
His gaze flitted towards Giselle, and then back to Xander.
âIs that her?â
There was a strange silence, and then Xander frowned and nodded his head with difficulty.
âOh, sheâs still alive?â
W-What was this person saying?! How could he say such a thing?
âIâm surprised myself,â Xander spat, âthat weâre alive despite you throwing us out.â
âBarely,â The man replied, his eyes leveling with Xanderâs. âShe wouldnât be here not for my money.â
The man smirkedâa twisted, ugly smile that made my throat burn with anger.
Xander only clenched his teeth.
âDonât know how youâre going to pay me back with what you have right nowâbut you agreed to the deal right? Better start thinking, son.â
There was a mocking tone in his voiceâand I wondered whether the term âsonâ was simply a figurative speech, or that this horrible person was actually Xander and Giselleâs father.
âIâve paid for your sisterâs surgical feesâmeanwhile,â The man paused, taking a step closer to Xander.
âYou can learn how useless you are without wealth,â He ended, a terrible smile on his face.
He turned on his heel to walk down the corridorâand at the end of it, there was a woman waiting for him.
He snaked an arm around her hips, and sauntered off.
Both Xander and Giselle were very silentâ
And for once, I believed that it was for the same reason.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
-Slowly-
âT-Thatâs your father?â
Xander nodded, looking down at the sheets. âSome bastard he is huh?â
âWellâ¦â
I glanced at Giselle, who had insisted on using her new paintbrushes upon reaching home.
Xander squirted some paint on the palette, and handed her some paper.
I was in charge of guiding her hand to the correct color, and back to the paper.
âWe could haveâ¦settled the bill for youââ
âNo Angel. You have done so much for meâand what have I done?â Xanderâs tone was bitter.
âW-Well, you make me really happy, a-and um, theâ¦the warmâ¦and fuzzyââ
âNothingâ¦â
âIâve done nothing.â
I took my eyes off Giselle for a second to glance at Xanderâ
His face.
His eyesâ¦
Why were they soâ
âThatâs not true at all Xander, i-itâs not youâitâs me! Iâm the oneâ¦â
âWhat? Noâyouâre an Angel! So pure, so beautiful, so harmless and endearingâwhat am I? Some fucking demon,â Xander laughed cruelly, an arm shielding his eyes from my sight.
âStop helping meâ¦I donât deserve you at all.â
âI canât even protect my sisterâ
Who am I to protect you?â
âsad?
His eyes were so sad.
âXanderâ¦?â
I looked up at him, took his hands.
His eyes widened when he saw my faceâ
But they widened in fear.
How did I appear?
âShitâIâm sorry. Donât make that faceâ¦please donâtâ¦make that faceâ¦â
I lunged over, and our beings seemed to fit perfectly against one another.
We stayed together for a long time, simply hearing the beating of the otherâs heart.
Mineâs really fastâ
But Xander wasâ
Faster?
Why do I feel like weâre standing at the edge of a cliff?
Why do I see two wordsâ
The end?
And notâ
âHappily ever afterâ?
It was cold,
Even in his holdâ
Heart fooled,
Just a tool.
Tales lie,
Humans cryâ
Love ends,
None defend?
.
âGiselle? Whatâs that?â
Her canvas was painted a messy black.
âThatâs Love.â
âWhy is Love black?â
âBecauseâ¦
âBecause itâs rightâ¦in front of meâ
âBut canât seeâ¦
âCanât see it.â
She said, as she looked at us.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
While Xander waited for his results, he began to spend more time with his volleyball mates.
He helped out in the bakery every morning till close, and after that, he would sneak off to an indoor court with Blake to practice.
Rose and the rest didnât knowâ
Didnât notice how tired he was from taking care of Giselle, juggling volley and work at the bakery.
âAre you alright?â
âIâm fine Angel.â
âBecame so often spoke, that I felt a door closing.
Xander didnât want to share his pain.
He knows it would make me worryâ
But wasnât that the purpose of having someone that loved you?
To share joy, sorrow, pain, ecstasy?
I want to believe that everythingâs okayâ
But once you are loved, and have lovedâ
Love?
For why does Love existâ?
To make us cease
To believe?
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
-Slowly-
It was my turn to sleep on the couch outside, and when I woke up, I felt colder than usual.
There was a soft glow outside the window, so I sat up and pulled off the covers.
Whatâs this?
Soft, white fluff of little nothings floated gently from above.
I breathedâ
Fogging up the glass.
Itâs snowing.
Itâs snowing.
My feet brought me to the room, and I opened the door with such happiness, eager to tell the one that I lovedâ
âXan! Itâs snowing!â
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
âXanderâ¦?â
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
âXanâ¦der?â
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
To the Angel who holds my heart:
Thank you.
P.S,
I love you.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A/N: This, is a story of happiness.
I promise.
Not the end. Not yet.
