Baby Love
Kaif glanced at her who was staring at the wall clock. It was past 10 pm. He was watching a documentary on the TV in the lounge and she was sitting beside him leaving a huge distance between them, on the sofa. Her attention was fixed at her mobile phone but she was watching him from time to time.
"What?" He asked turning towards her.
"Nothing" She shrugged her shoulders.
"What you gonna do now?" She seemed restless to him.
"Sleep" As he rose up from the sofa she asked eagerly.
"It's too early" She mumbled.
"Yes, for you it is" He nodded.
"I usually sleep before 11 pm" He gave her the piece of information he knew she was familiar with.
"Right" She nodded her head and grabbed the TV remote. He disappeared into his bedroom. She stopped at a movie channel and increased the volume.
"Lower the volume" Kaif tried to not snap at her for annoying him deliberately. When did she even watch TV at this time. She used to hardly watch the TV on her own. This younger generation had mobile phones and tablets what else could be of their interest.
"I can't listen" She yelled from outside.
"Get your ears checked then" He snapped from the other side.
"Take me to the doctor then" She happily agreed without making any fuss.
After annoying him for more than ten minutes with the loud volume she turned off the TV and went to her room.
She saw the time. It was past 11 pm. She opened a reading app on her ipad and started reading a book. She was totally invested in the story when she heard footsteps in the middle of the night.
She looked up to see if Kaif was going anywhere but he wasn't there. She gulped her saliva and started reading a few prayers. She decided to not pay any attention to the sound and started reading the book again which was at a crucial stage. The identity of the villain was about to reveal when her bedroom's lights turned on, on its own.
A loud shriek escaped her lips and she closed her eyes tightly.
"Relax! Pagal larki. It's me only" She opened her eyes on his annoyed voice.
(Stupid girl)
She found him standing at the door with a packet in his one hand and a little bag in the other hand. At the same time her phone started receiving countless messages as the day changed.
She fixed her eyes at him in the background noise of annoying notification sound. And then the miracle of this century happened.
Kaif Khalil gave her a charming smile.
"Happy birthday Nataliya!" He said softly, walking inside her room.
Not once did her hands itch to check messages on her cell phone. It didn't matter to her anymore. She was excited to receive birthday wishes but right now all her excitement was about this man sitting next to her on her bed.
She wasn't expecting him to even wish her as he acted all the time that he didn't remember anything nor did he do anything suspicious. From where the cake arrived. She was really shocked.
How come this boring man even decided to entertain her.
He removed the cake from the packet and placed it on the bed, placed a candle in the center of the cake and lit it.
"Happy eighteenth birthday" He said warmly, looking into her eyes.
She came out of shock and gave him her brightest smile. She clapped her hand for once in excitement and blew the candle.
"Thank you. I thought you don't even remember" She giggled.
"I remembered it" He said.
"You acted as if you are going to sleep" She narrowed her eyes at him.
"I did fall asleep for an hour" He shrugged his shoulders amusingly.
"Cut the cake" He pointed at the blueberry cheesecake which was her favorite flavor.
She cut the cake and ate a piece of it. It was so delicious. She saw him he was smiling turning his face to the other side.
"What" She mumbled, handed him a small piece.
He shook his head and ate the piece she gave him. It was indeed very delicious. He kept looking at her who was licking her fingers.
"How come you decided to surprise me professor?" She asked putting her fist under her chin.
"Ani always used to celebrate your birthday. Last year Ani surprised you. I wanted to celebrate your special day this year as well" He told her sadly.
"So nice of you" She mumbled sadly. Both were sad remembering Shabnam.
"My gift?" She shook her head and raised her hand in the air to receive her gift.
"Isn't cake enough?" He asked.
"No. I can see the bag in your hand. I am thinking what can fit in this small bag. Don't tell me you just brought me chocolates. I will kill you for that" She started speaking non stop.
"Here take it! I don't want to be killed yet" He said lightly and passed her the bag.
"I can't believe The arrogant KK is giving me a gift" She grabbed the bag impatiently.
"What's KK?" He asked unknowingly.
"You. We students have named you KK. Whole university calls you KK. Don't you know that. you live under a rock Sirrr!" She chuckled.
"All of you are nonsense" He shook his head.
She was about to say something in response but her tongue got stuck when she looked at what was inside the bag. It was dark blue jewelry box, which had a beautiful gold necklace and a pair of earnings.
Her heart filled with happiness and eyes glistened with tears as she looked at her beautiful gift. She wasn't expecting such a gift from him. When did she even think he would gift her expensive jewelry.
"It's so freaking beautiful" She said in trance, her fingers traced the pattern of the necklace.
He smiled a little and nodded his head.
"Is it mine? Are you sure you didn't give me the wrong gift" She teased him with a smirk.
"Of course. It's your birthday and I am not into womanly things" He was annoyed.
"Damn! I got rich" She mumbled, getting up from the bed. Standing in front of the mirror, she wore the necklace around her neck.
Kaif kept looking at her through the mirror. He was glad she was happy at his surprise. It was her eighteenth birthday, the first one after their marriage, he wanted to give her a special gift. He was satisfied to see her happy face. He remembered a few hours how disappointed she was when she thought he was going to sleep without doing anything for her special day.
Her face was brightening with happiness. He smiled looking at her reflection into the mirror. She was just a baby, so innocent and pure.
"Thank you so much Sir! You aren't that arrogant. I wish I could tell it to the whole class" She twirled and smiled at him.
"As you wish" He knew she wouldn't dare to acknowledge their relationship to anyone yet.
She looked at him nervously when he came closer to her.
"Now, you aren't a kid anymore. You are a big girl Nataliya! Start behaving like one and be a little responsible" He patted her cheeks lightly and asked her softly.
She nodded her head obediently like a good girl.
"Place it with the rest of the jewelry of mama in the locker" She removed the necklace and handed him the box.
"No, you have your own locker in the cupboard. Keep it there and take care of your things responsibly. I gave it to you to wear it" He shook his head.
"I can't wear it to the University. Only married women wear gold" She tsked and his limited information.
"Aren't you married Nataliya?" He asked in his deep voice, which played erratically with her heart.
"But nobody knows" She mumbled nervously.
"We both know it. It's enough for us" He patted her cheeks once again before leaving her alone in the room.
