Read My Lips
Chapter 4
I walked away from the man who was currently lying on the floor. My jaw ached from where he punched me; my knuckles were bleeding and bruised again from all the hits I sent him. Not to mention my lip was bleeding and blood was dribbling down my chin. Ew.
âDammit, Zach, you cannot keep fighting with everyone. Youâre either going to get yourself seriously hurt, get yourself killed or worse, kill someone.â Ryan warned me. I swear heâs always been the one who moans the most and worries the most. I guess itâs good that heâs so worried about us because it shows he cares but itâs really annoying a lot of the time.
âWill you chill, Ryan? Nothingâs going to happen to me. Iâll be completely fine and you know I wouldnât do anything worse than knocking someone out. Iâd never kill someone.â I sighed, shaking my head.
Ryan really had to stop worrying. It was my decision to fight people, not his. If I got hurt, it was my fault, not his. If I hurt someone, it was my fault and not his. You get my point. It had nothing to do with him. I get that heâs worried but if I did something that ended up with a consequence, then it was my fault.
âI know but if your mum seeâs you like this one more time you can guarantee sheâs going to start been more suspicious that she already is.â He said, following me to where our motorbikes were parked.
âShe most likely wonât be in when I get home anyway. Sheâll probably be at work.â I shrugged.
My mum normally worked night shift so she could be at home during the day. I donât know why she worked night shift when that was the one time I needed her there but she did. Youâd probably guess that Iâd have a close relationship with my mum; but I donât. I never knew my dad and I donât have any other siblings so itâs just us, but we arenât close.
âRe-wrap your knuckles then and make sure you clean your lip.â He warned, pointing his finger at me before he put his helmet on and jumped onto his motorbike.
âYes mum!â I mock saluted him and copied his actions. I started my motorbike up and looked at Ryan.
âShut up. Iâll see you later.â He called, waving his hand and revving up his bike.
âYeah, see you.â I replied and backed out from where I was parked then, I started my journey home.
When I arrived home, straight away I headed up to my room to grab the bandage then straight to the bathroom to clean myself up. I wiped the blood away from my chin and lip and looked at the wound that was left. The cut was only small. Sure it was noticeable, but it wasnât obvious and drew attention to me giving off the âlook, Iâve just been punched!â vibe.
My jaw was slightly bruised as well. People were used to seeing this so theyâd not be too fussed over it. I wiped the blood from my knuckles carefully. With the bruises that I had been left with, it hurt a lot to put pressure onto them. Once they were all clean, I bandaged them up and headed back to my room.
After I had changed and dressed myself in my pyjamas, I grabbed my laptop and logged onto Facebook. Straight away I searched for Maisie. The top suggestion was âMaisie Evansâ so I clicked on it. Her photo was set as the profile picture so I clicked on the add friend button. Maisie had her profile on private so I couldnât see anything that was wrote on it, or if anyone had wrote on it.
My computer pinged so I looked back at the screen to see sheâd accepted my request. A grin automatically made its way onto my face as I looked at my notification. She was online so I clicked on her name on the chat button and sent her a message.
Zach Danvers: Hey, how are you?
Maisie Evans: Hi, Iâm fine, how are you?
Zach Danvers: Iâm good, a little bruised, but good.
Maisie Evans: What do you mean bruised?
Zach Danvers: I got into a little fight, no big deal. Donât worry about it J
Maisie Evans: Ok⦠sure.
Zach Danvers: So, about that maths tutoring, are you still up for it?
Maisie Evans: Um, sure. When are you free?
Zach Danvers: I guess I could make Thursdayâs my tutoring night. Does that work for you?
Maisie Evans: Sure, that works. I gotta go, bye.
Zach Dancers: Awesome! Oh, ok, bye.
She went offline and left me sat there grinning. I was looking forward to spending more time with her, even if it was just to study. There was something about her that had me hooked; her accent. Why people laughed at her. Things like that. Just her all together, she seems very interesting.

âI going to bed, night.â I said after I shut my laptop off.
âNight sweetie.â Mum said getting up and hugging me.
I hugged dad after her then went upstairs to my room. I set my laptop down on my desk and made my way over to me bed. Before going on my laptop, I had already showered and changed so there was nothing for me to do except go to bed.
Once my blinds and curtains were shut, I turned on my bedside lamp and climbed into bed and pulled the covers up to my chin. I lay on my side facing the door and slowly drifted off into a sleep.
When morning arrived, I was woken up by my mum shaking me. âGet up, Maisie. Breakfast is ready and set on the table.â She smiled.
âOk, I getting up.â I replied groggily, sitting up and wiping my eyes.
I let out a yawn before I climbed out of bed and made my way to my closet to decide on what to wear. After a while of deciding, I eventually chose a pair of jeans and a long sleeved top. Nothing fancy but it was fine considering I only had school.
Downstairs, mum had already set the table with pancakes and orange juice. I sat down at the table on the seat beside Austin and opposite my dad. My mum set down some pancakes in front of Austin and I then sat down opposite him.
âDo you want a ride to school, sweetie?â Dad asked, putting his last piece of pancake in his mouth.
âYeah, sure.â I smiled, starting on my on pancakes.
âOk, Iâll just go and get ready then Iâll meet you at the car?â He suggested, standing up from the chair.
âSure.â I replied before I finishing my breakfast.
As soon as Iâd finished breakfast, I said goodbye to mum then grabbed my bag and made my way out to the car where dad was waiting for me. When I got to the car, dad was already waiting in the driver seat. I got into the car and slammed the door behind me then I turned to face dad.
âYou ready?â
âYeah, I ready.â I nodded. I turned back to face the front of the car so I could look out the windscreen. I watched the scenery as we drove through out town towards school.
Ignoring the looks I got from everyone as I passed them in the hallway, I continued my walk towards the cafeteria. It was now lunch time, the time everyone loved but the time I hated. As usual I made my way straight to the back table where no one sat. When I was about half way there, someone grabbed my arm pulling me to a stop. I span around only to see Zach staring down at me.
âI called your name but you never answered.â He said a frown on his face as he stared down at me.
âYou did?â I asked. I kept my eyes on his mouth to make sure I could catch what he said next.
âI did. Can I sit with you again today?â He asked nodding down towards his tray. He already bought lunch?
âErm, I guess so.â I said slowly. I turned around and continued walking towards the back of the hall; occasionally turning back to make sure Zach was still behind me.
We sat down at the table and he took the seat opposite. He didnât start eating straight away like I expected him to. I turned my gaze from him and reached into my bag and pulled out my lunch.
âMaisie, thereâs people pointing towards you and whispering.â Zach said once he got my attention.
âThere is? Ignore them.â I mumbled opening my lunch and keeping my gaze on his face. Of course heâd point that out, why not.
âIgnore them? Are you just going to let them carry on with it?â He asked, clearly shocked.
âThere not anything I can do, is there?â I replied. There wasnât. Theyâd just laugh at me like they normally did.
âI can tell them to shut up. Hey, theyâre scared of me anyway. Iâm sure if I just tell them theyâd not do it anymore.â
âBelieve me, they would.â I sighed. He wasnât going to drop this was he?
âI can say something to them, if-â He started before I cut him off.
âNo.â I said bluntly.
âOk, sorry. Since its Thursday, does that mean studying is on tonight?â he asked.
âIf it ok with you.â
âYeah, definitely is. We can go to my house. Iâll meet you at the front doors when schools over?â He asked, finally starting his lunch.
âYeah, ok,â I replied. âI just realised, where your friends?â
âTheyâre not meeting me today. Theyâre going out for lunch.â He smiled after swallowing his food.
âOh.â Or maybe they just didnât want to sit with me?
