Read My Lips

Chapter 3

I walked into the school with Jake and met Ryan and Dan by the doors like we did most days. Jake, Ryan and Dan already had the stuff that they needed so I went to my locker and got the books out I needed then threw my P.E kit bag into my locker for last lesson. P.E was definitely my favourite lesson at school, you could just relax. I don’t really know, I just enjoy it a lot. I guess with fighting a lot and having to keep fit, it makes sense really.

“You know, we’re already 2 months into the school year and I still haven’t seen this new girl.” Jake commented as we walked around the corner and towards out tutor room. I had my attention set on him, making sure I'd catch what he had to say.

“There’s a new girl?” I asked. No one mentioned a new girl starting. There wasn’t anyone new in our tutor, or in any of my classes so I guess it makes sense not to know there was one.

“Yeah, she started in our year in September.” He replied, opening the door to our tutor room.

“I didn’t even know there was someone new in the school never mind our year. Guess I’ll have to find out who she is if you know what I mean.” Dan winked, a smirk making its way onto his face.

“You can’t go after every girl, especially the new ones.” Ryan sighed, shaking his head at him.

“What? Why not?” Dan demanded, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Well; 1, not every girl is going to like you and 2, she’s new. Why go after the new girl?” Ryan sighed, again.

“Because she won’t know that everyone’s scared of us and she won’t know my reputation, durr.” He said sarcastically. As I said before, he’s such a man whore.

“You’re so egoistic.” Jake muttered.

“I am not. I’m a male. I have my needs.” Dan shot back, making Ryan and I laugh.

“Dude, you know yourself you don’t care about the girls as long as you’re getting some.” I smirked at him.

“Oh, shut up, Zach.” He snapped only making me laugh more. It was so fun teasing him.

Tutor and first lesson went by pretty quick. The next lesson I had was English. Great. I hate English, it’s so boring, who even cares what the meaning of a quote from a poem or book is? No one. I  bet the teachers even making it up, I mean, I bet the person who even wrote the poem didn’t even mean the reason the teachers say.

Once the first four lessons were over, I met up with Ryan, Jake and Dan again.

“How about going to the café? I’m hungry.” Ryan said, slamming his locker shut.

“Of course you are,” I said, rolling my eyes. When wasn’t he hungry? He ate like a pig but never put on weight. The perks of fast metabolism. “Let’s go then.”

We walked down through the science wing, down the stairs and through the hallway that lead to the cafeteria. The hallway that leads down the side near the doors was packed with people blocking it so we had to push past them. Not that that was a problem, people moved for us anyway.

Once Ryan bought the food that he wanted; we walked out to find a table. Most of them were full because a lot of people came down here as soon as the bell went, whereas a lot would wait until later so it was emptier. Normally, we done that, but Ryan been Ryan had to come down straight away for food. Some people were snickering and pointing at someone at the back of the hall. I looked to where they were pointing to see a girl sat there all alone. I couldn’t see her face since she was sat with her back to me. If there’s one thing I hated the most, it’s definitely bullying.

“Do you guys want to go sit with that girl at the back? She’s by herself and I’m sure everyone here’s laughing at her.” I said, turning to look at their faces. They all nodded in reply.

“Sure, lead the way.” Jake replied, nodding his head in the direction of the girl as a sign for me to go.

I walked through the tables, dodging people who were rushing to get tables before they were left standing. It made me curious why students were rushing to get tables when there was a perfectly good one at the back with just that girl sat there. After successfully making my way to the back table, we were stood behind her. Turning around, pretty much everyone in the café was looking at us four in shock.

“Hey,” I said, looking down at her waiting for her to turn around, only she didn’t. Confused, I looked at Jake, Ryan and Dan seeing they had the same expression as me. “Hello?”

“Yo, girl?” Dan said making me laugh. Why wasn’t she turning around?

After waiting for a few more seconds, I gave up and sat down next to her making her head snap up and look at me. Holy shit, she’s beautiful. Her blonde hair fell over her shoulders in loose curls; she wore hardly any makeup, just a little bit of lipstick and mascara. My heart beat picked up as I stared into her blue eyes as she stared back at me. Her eyes flickered down to my lips quickly before meeting my eyes again.

“Er… Um… Hi.” I stuttered. I could faintly hear Dan snickering at me behind my back.

Her eyes watched my lips before she replied. “Hi.” She said, her voice had a weird accent to it.

I turned back to look at Ryan, Dan and Jake. “Aren’t you going to sit down then?” I asked.

“Um, yeah.” Ryan said, looking at me weirdly. I frowned at him before turning back to the girl who was still looking at me.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Um, Maisie.” She replied, looking around the table at Dan, Ryan and Jake.

“I’m Zach, and this is Ryan, Dan and Jake.” I said pointing to each of them so that she’d know who was who. They all said ‘hi’ to her in which she replied back shyly.

“So, why’s everyone laughing at you?” I said, looking back at the rest of the hall to see most people shooting sly glances at us. What was their problem?

“I not sure.” She said, looking back at the food she had in front of her. Her voice had a really weird sound to it, maybe she’s not from around here and it’s just her accent. Yeah, that’s probably it.

“Do they do this all the time?” I asked, watching her face as she intently stared at her food.

No reply.

Her facial expression didn’t change. Her focus on the food in front of her didn’t change. Nothing changed.

“Er, I said; ‘Do they do this all the time?’” I repeated, hoping she’d realise I was talking to her.

Nothing.

I tapped her on her shoulder making her slowly tear her gaze away from her food and up to my face. Her eyes, yet again, flickered to my lips before they focused back on my eyes.

“Do they laugh at you all the time?” I asked, once again. Her eyes watched my lips before she replied.

“I not know. I not notice.” Maisie said quickly. For some reason, her reply wasn’t convincing. I didn’t believe a word of that. Her reply was far too quick.

“Ok then,” I said, slowly. Her eyes flickered over to Ryan, Dan and Jake before she looked back to me. “So, what lesson do you have next?”

“Maths.” She replied simply. Guess she’s not a big talker then.

“So do I. Who do you get?” I asked, trying to keep the conversation going.

She wasn’t making it easy. Maybe she was shy around new people or maybe she didn’t want to talk to anyone. Or maybe she even found it hard to keep a conversation going with people. Lots of people struggle with that don’t they?

“Mr Lowe.” She answered, running a hand through her hair. Damn that’s sexy.

I drew my look from her current action and cleared my throat. “Ah, I don’t have him. Doesn’t he teach the higher students?”

She nodded her head. “Yeah. But I not that clever. I not know why I’m in that class.”

“Well you obviously must be clever or you wouldn’t be that high,” I laughed. “Hey, maybe you could tutor me sometime? I’m not very good at maths.”

“Erm, sure?” She answered making it sound more like a question. Who cares. She said yes.

“Great,” I chirped making the other boys snicker. Shit, I forgot they were there. “So I better go, catch you later?”

Maisie nodded in reply and focused back on her food. She seemed to have a weird habit of doing that. She’d done it multiple times when I was talking to her.

I got up from the chair at the table, the boys doing the same. Ryan had already finished his lunch, not surprisingly at all. After giving his tray to the dinner lady, he walked back to the group. Ignoring the looks from everyone, we made our way outside like every other day.

“She’s weird.” Dan said from behind me.

“Just because she’s not like the chicks you go for does not mean she’s weird.” I said, turning around to look at him.

Shock flashed across his face before he replied. “Er.. I meant.. It was just.. Her accent was weird. I didn’t recognise it.”

I laughed at his stuttering and attempt to cover up what he said. “Yeah, whatever. Hey, can we go out for lunch today? For a change?”

“Yeah, I really want some chips.” Ryan grinned, rubbing his hands together.

“You just bought food from the café? How are you still hungry?” I asked, gawping at him. It still surprises me how he’s not in the slightest bit fat.

“I’m a growing boy. I need my food.” He moaned, rubbing his stomach.

“Ok then, whatever you say.” Jake smirked, smacking him on the shoulder.

“Hey, it’s true!” Ryan said, defending himself. “Don’t tell me that none of you lot eat loads.”

“We do, we’re not saying we don’t. But you eat what we all eat put together.” Dan laughed.

“Shut up you fool,” He snapped before walking off. “Hurry up! I’m hungry!”

Yep; typical Ryan.

Picure of Jake
