Chapter 2
I walked into the front door of my house to be met with the smell of my mumâs cooking. Sheâs the best cook ever, her foodâs amazing. Something smashed into my legs making me look down to see my little brother, Austin, hugging my legs.
âHi buddy,â I grinned, picking him up and resting him on my hips. âLetâs go see mum.â
âHi sweetie, how was school?â She asked, once sheâd turned around from the cooker where Iâm guessing she was cooking tea.
âIt fine.â I lied. I didnât want to tell her about been bullied at school, I didnât want to worry her. She probably had enough trouble with me been deaf.
âGood, Iâm just making dinner, do you have any homework to do?â
âNot today,â I smiled, setting Austin in his dinner chair and ruffling his blonde hair. âWhereâs daddy?â
âHeâs in the living room baby.â She smiled, walking over to kiss my head before going back to making the tea.
I left the kitchen and made my way into the living room, where my dad was sat in his chair reading the paper. He must have heard me come in because he looked up, a smile on his face.
âHi, princess.â He smiled, opening his arms as a gesture to hug him. I used to do this all the time when I was younger. Iâd lay my head down on his chest and feel it rumble when he laughed.
âHi daddy.â I grinned, sitting on his lap and wrapping my arms around his waist. I didnât know if he was talking or not but I just enjoyed the comfort of his embrace. Nothing beats a giant bear hug off your daddy.
I donât know how long I was sat there, but I felt myself dozing off only to be jerked awake by my dad. I pulled back and looked at his face to see what was wrong.
âDinnerâs ready.â He smiled, I nodded my head to him before getting off his lap.
After dinner, I kissed my parents and brother good night before heading up to my room. After showing, I changed into my pyjamas and settled down into bed with my book. It was quite boring, not been able to listen to music, or watch TV. But, I guess you get used to the silence.

I woke up the next morning to my mum shaking me. I groaned before sitting up in bed and rubbing my hands over my face.
âCome on, get up baby, go get washed.â She smiled, pulling the covers of my bed back.
âOk.â I moaned, dragging myself out of bed and into my bathroom that was connected to my bedroom. Thatâs one of the many perks of your dad having a good job. He earns quite a lot of money meaning we have a big house.
After getting washed and brushing my teeth, I pulled my hair up into a loose ponytail. I walked over to my wardrobe and pulled out a pair of skinny jeans and a baggy jumper before going to my drawers and choosing some matching underwear. I could smell something delicious coming from downstairs, so I quickly grabbed my school bag and ran down the stairs and into the kitchen where my mum was plating up pancakes.
âHereâs some pancakes, get them down you.â Mum smiled, placing them on the table in front of me along with the bottle of golden syrup.
âThank you.â I grinned, digging into my food.
My mum was the best cook ever. After I went deaf, mum gave up her job so she could look after me full time, then when I was 14; she had Austin so there wasnât really much point in her going to work. So I guess she spent her time cooking, which is a good thing because now, she makes the nicest food ever.
âHere, Iâll wash that for you. Can you wake Austin up?â Mum smiled, taking my plate off me and taking it to the sink. Both of my parents treat me like a baby, theyâre really protective of me. I canât really say that thatâs a bad thing because it just shows how much they actually care for me.
âOk, I will.â I smiled back. I turned my back to my mum and made my way back into our hallway and up the staircase. Austinâs room was the first door on the right. Opening the door quietly, I tip-toed in to see he was still fast asleep cuddling his monkey teddy. He looked so adorable hugging it. âHey, wake up.â I whispered shaking him. He moved around before looking over at me.
âHi Maisie.â He smiled tiredly.
âHi bud, get up.â I smiled, lifting him out of bed and taking him downstairs to mum.
She turned around when I walked into the kitchen. âOh, thanks Maisie.â She smiled, handing Austin some cereal.
âIt fine, I go to school now.â I smiled, picking up my bag and kissing her cheek.
âOk baby, have fun.â She smiled back, planting a kiss on my cheek and pulling me into a hug. I love my mum.
I smiled one more time at her before turning around and walking out the house so I could wait for the bus to come.

I flexed my knuckles, grimacing as pain shot up them. âAh, shit, this hurts.â I groaned, banging my head off the wall behind me.
âServes you right dude.â Jake snickered, obviously finding my pain funny.
âHow does this serve me right? Ah crap, I swear Iâve broke these.â I moaned, looking at the bruises that were already beginning to cover my knuckles, as well as the cuts and dried blood that covered them.
âYou shouldnât have got into the fight. Youâll have to clean them up and bandage them or something,â He smirked, patting my back roughly before standing up. âIâm off home to get changed. Pick me up for school?â
âSure, if I can drive.â I said, sarcastically. I rummaged through my draws beside my bed, looking for a bandage.
âOh, shut up you drama queen,â He chuckled before turning around. âLater.â
âYeah, whatever.â I mumbled, still focusing on finding the bandage. After searching through all of my draws, I gave up and made my way into the kitchen to look in them draws. Once Iâd gotten to the third draw, my mum came in from her work shift.
âWhat are you looking for?â She asked, hanging her coat up and kicking her shoes off beside the draw of our little house.
âUm⦠nothing?â I said, making it sound more like a question.
âDo not lie to me Zachary Danvers.â Mum said sternly, pointing her finger in my direction.
âDamn, ok, ok, I hurt my hand, thatâs all. Where are the bandages?â I asked, keeping my hand behind my back. Sheâd go mental if she saw.
âWhat did you do to your hand?â she asked, raising her eyebrow.
âNothing, nothing at all. Mum, whereâs the bandages, Iâm going to be late for school.â I sighed, running my free hand through my hair.
âIn the draw beside the sink, you better hurry up if you donât want to be late.â She smiled, kissing my cheek before leaving the kitchen and going to her room.
I opened the draw where she said the bandages were, and sure enough, there were loads of them. I grabbed a few more and took them with me to my room. You never know, right now been a perfect example. I threw them in my draw beside my bed and sat down to put my bandage on, after cleaning it, of course. I made sure it was tied tightly before I grabbed my jacket and ran from my room and out the door, shouting âbyeâ to mum as I went.
Instead of taking my motorbike like I normally would, I got in my car instead, especially since I had to go pick Jake up. At least the drive to his wasnât that long. Dan and Ryan normally rode together as well, considering they were neighbours, it was easier for them. Pulling up at Jakeâs, I beeped my car horn and waited for him to come out. It only took him a few seconds before he was running down the path and opening the door to my car.
âHowâs the hand?â He smirked, nodding his head to where my bruised hand was gripping the steering wheel.
âOh, shut up, Jake. Youâd have been worse off it you were in my position.â I smirked, pulling out of his drive way.
âNo I would not have. Donât diss my fighting skills bro.â He said, glaring at me.
âIâm a better fighter than you, admit it.â I smirked, looking at him from the corner of my eye as I concentrated on the road.
âNo youâre not. Stop been so cocky or youâll end up like Dan. Just fighting instead of girls.â He laughed. He really wasnât as funny as he thought.
âI am not cocky. Donât even say I am.â I said, not laughing at all.
âOh come on, Zach. You know Iâm only joking.â He sighed.
âYeah, ok. Turn the radio on, I donât like it off.â I nodded to the radio before turning right and pulling up outside the school.
