Chapter 36
She Approved the Split He Fell Apart
036 His Invitation Scarlettâs POV âMr. Dunn, Iâm so sorry!â I turn to Adrian Dunn with my heart in my throat and my head dizzy at Sebastianâs provoking words.
Did they always talk like this? Cause thatâs easier to believe than thinking that Sebastian came on so aggressively because of me.
âWhy are you apologizing for him?â Adrian does not play by the rules, at all.
âIn case you forgot, sheâs my wife!â Sebastian answers so fast as if he has been waiting a chance to declare that.
âIâm NOT!â I snap at him, before taking a deep breath and turning back to Adrian Dunn,â Anyways, Iâm sorry for the role I played in this, if any...â
âNo need to apologize.â The smile is back on Adrianâs face. His eyes land on Sebastian but he continues to speak to me saying, âI donât consider you two a couple anymore, so. No reason to hold you responsible for anything HE does.â
Sebastian looks like he wants to bury Adrian Dunn alive.
With what seems like tremendous effort, he shifts his glare from Adrian Dunn to me: âCan we talk?â
I could barely expect him to say that to me when we were married, and ever since I wanted him out of my life, this seems to be his new favorite opening.
Bitter irony.
âAbout what?â I fold my arms impatiently. But I already know âwhatâ. He wants something. and thatâs why he put the divorce papers I have been waiting for on hold. Whatever it is, I wonât budge this time. If he still wants to marry his Ava, then he will cave, eventually.
âScarlett!â Sebastian snaps at my question.
Adrian laughs. But instead of a glare, Sebastian looks at me with surprise.
âWhat?â I frown.
âYou used to-â He doesnât finish. Used to...? Defend him? Yeah, I wouldnât allow anyone to offend him, for anything, without reason. Even if he was at fault, I would take his side.
But that was before.
Sebastian nails his eyes on me as if he wants to put a hole through my bead with his sight. But all of a sudden he lets go of the breath he is holding and softens his tone: âCan we please talk? Itâs about granny.â
036 Hic Invitation +25 BONUS I would have refused. If not for his last words.
He had been a total jerk to me during our marriage, but not granny. In fact, she treated me closer than my own âfamilyâ did. She knew I blackmailed Sebastian, and I could tell she wasnât pleased with that, especially when Sebastian had made it clear that his hand was forced. But sooner than I realized, Granny had changed her attitude toward me.
I think at some point, she really wanted me and Sebastian to work out.
I hurt her beloved grandson, and now Iâm bailing first. To her, I do feel guilty.
I âWhat about granny?â I sigh, caving in. Sebastian might hate me and has kept his distance, but he knows all my weaknesses well, just like I know his. Sometimes I wonder if we were fated to torment each other.
Sebastian turns to Adrian Dunn with a childish winning tone: âWhy are you still here? Are you not just blind, but also deaf?â
Adrianâs eyes narrow dangerously.
I understand his frustration. I, too, want to knock something into Sebastianâs arrogant head. Does he even know that he is in THE Dunn Corpâs building? As in, Adrianâs territory?
Adrian says itâs okay, but I still feel somewhat responsible for Sebastianâs hostility toward him, especially since I havenât yet finished severing my ties with him completely.
Taking a step forward, I stand between the two men and announce to Sebastian: âWe are going to have lunch together, so I hope you can finish what you have to say and stop wasting other peopleâs time!â
I I see pain in Sebastianâs eyes, but I donât feel heartache this time.
He is hurt because I used to defend him, and now Iâm defending others. He didnât appreciate me taking his side, not even once.
And now he has to embarrass me by acting like a child while I still âbearâ his name?
He refused me when I took his side, and he pushed me away. So of all people, he doesnât h the right to look hurt when I comply with his wish!
âScar, do we have to talk like this?â Sebastian mumbles with his puppy dog look, and I dart my eyes away. I wonât allow myself to be swayed by him, not again.
âAdrian, Iâm sorry but could you-
âIâll wait for you outside,â Adrian gives me a warm smile, making it easy for me.
I do feel guilt. Towards Adrian. I brought trouble for him, yet he is still being considerate to the extreme. I feel bad because I wouldnât have agreed to a private lunch with my bossâtoâbe. I did it just to piss off Sebastian.
Adrianâs perfect figure disappears outside the revolving door. Sebastian grips my chin and turns my head to him: âGrannyâs birthday party. You are still coming right?â
