Chapter 147 Burn The Midnight Oil
She Approved the Split He Fell Apart
Scarlettâs POV Damian Vanderbilt left with Oliver Scott. All I know is the name Grey, not even their car plates. So if I want to do anything, following them is my only chance.
âChange of plan!â I drag Lucas out of there, âHowâs your driving skill comparing to Adrianâs?â
âBasically the same,â Lucas frowns in confusion, âEnough to meet your needs. I know about your car sick situationââ
âCan you do a car chase?â I cut him off, pointing at the car leaving the Fullerâs gate, âFollow that car!â We almost lost them in the middle. Well, actually we did. I donât know who was driving in that car, but their driving style changed midway as they apparently noticed us following, and we lost them after they entered a tunnel. I donât know where they came from, and I donât know where they are going. I donât even know whether itâs really my Lilith. But he is a lawyer and Lilith just got into a law firm. I canât help but make that connection.
âThatâs not the same as Adrian at all!â I complain when their car is nowhere to be found.
âOur target is not an ordinaryââ Lucas rolls his eyes as he protests, only to stop halfway, âOkay, no matter. Since we lost the target anyway, can you tell me what this is about? So this girl, she is seen at a place they donât expect her to be normally, but you felt that she might be in some sort of danger?â
Yeah, but why? I blink in confusion. Why did I assume she was in danger?
âI think so...â I murmur, remembering the short conversation, âBecause of his eyes. He was protective and in haste. Sebastian had that look when Ava called him out in the middle of the night.â
âBut you donât even know whether they were talking about your friend,â Lucas points out.
Hearing it out loud made me realize what a stupid thing I had just done. I followed two guys that I didnât even know until today out in the middle of the night, lost them, and Iâm not even sure I should have followed them.
âSorry...â I lie back into the seat, âI was...going with only my intuition.â
âThatâs not what I meant,â Lucas laughs lightly, âMaybe you can try to locate your friend instead? I mean, if they were going to your friend, then you will find them there; and if they werenât talking about your friend, then you donât care where they went, right?â
Right!
âThanks! Thatâs brilliant!â I grin at Lucas, adding to his smirk, âAnd no, itâs because you are brilliant and not because I was stupid!
Shush, Iâm on the phone!â
He laughs in silence as I dial Lilithâs number. No answer. Then I called Aurora, only to find out that Lilith never moved in with her.
Apparently Lilith agreed to it, only to back out at the last minute. Then I called Damon.
âSheâs not picking up her phone?â Damon sounds confused. I didnât want to alarm him, but I had no other to turn to, so I told him I had some legal questions.for her, âShe should be at the National Library at this time. She has been drowning herself there recently.â
147 Burn The Midnight Oil âCool, Iâll try my luck, thanks!â I raise my thumb at Lucas, âI heard you coughing though. Are you okay?â
âYeah...joined the pandemic recently,â Damon laughs bitterly, his voice sounds faint, âIâm okay now, thanks for asking.â
He soon got off the phone, and I found the directions online for Lucas. Though we are on our way, and the library IS on ahead where we lost Damian Vanderbilt, it just doesnât feel right.
âA library? Oliver Scott doesnât look like someone who would go to a library, does he...?â I mumble to myself more than talking to Lucas, âAlso, why tell his friend that his âpetâ is at an interesting place if thatâs where she has been for a while? I mean, she was in the law school. Hitting the library just might be the least weird place for her to be.â
âOr,â Lucas taps on the map, curving his lips, âthe brother doesnât have the right answer either.â
âNo way, Damon said he picks her up every night.â
âYeah, on the street in front of the library,â Lucas chuckles, shooting me a taunting look, âDoes that necessarily mean that she was in the library before that? Nope.â
âWhat do you mean?â I frown, âWhy would Lilith even lie about it? Damon and she has only each other, and she would neverââ
âCalm down, I think I know where she is,â Lucas takes a turn, putting us on the busy street where we already see the tall tip of the gothicâlooking library, âOne last question: Your friend, does she attend bars normally?â
