Chapter 793
Wooing My Ex-Wife
She looked down and asked, âDo you find me annoying?â
Megan was taken aback by her question. She patted Gwendolynâs hand, prompting her not to overthink things. âOf course not! Youâve brought so much joy to my life. Itâs just thatâ¦â Megan hesitated and thought for a while before continuing, âItâs just that I canât provide a wealthy heiress like you a comfortable stay in my shabby home with a spartan interior.â
Gwendolyn chuckled and replied, âNo worries, Megan. You mentioned that your husband and son who work in the city will only be home once a year. Iâd like to keep you company.â
After a brief chit-chat, Megan seemed to be more at ease. âYouâre so kind, Gwendolyn.â
With a smile on her face, Gwendolyn continued to probe further. âYouâve been living alone most of your time before you rescued me. Donât you feel lonely? If you like, you can come with me. Iâll bring you to the city to see your husband and son.â
Megan did not consider her suggestion and shook her head resolutely. âMy roots are here. Although my family isnât around, I must stay and guard the mountain.â
âBut there were gunshots heard today. This place is no longer safe,â Gwendolyn stated worriedly.
âJust let me be, Gwendolyn. Even if I die, I want to die here.â Megan shook her head persistently and concluded the topic briefly.
Hearing that, Gwendolyn refrained from asking more questions.
Her expression dimmed as she recalled the gold bars she saw in the muddy ground.
Cedrick was there all along, standing outside of the courtyard.
The house was not soundproof, so he could hear their conversations clearly from the outside.
Is it really okay for a woman to stay alone in such a remote area for so many years? Moreover, sheâs an unskilled village woman!
Frowning, Cedrick remained in the courtyard, but he planned to enter the house and check if there were any photos of Meganâs husband and son.
Bang! Shortly after, he heard another gunshot from afar.
Although the sound came from the foot of the mountain, it was loud and clear.
Subsequently, Cedrick received a phone call from Nico. âCedrick, weâve found the sniper who was hiding in the woods. When Charles and I rushed over, he was about to unload his rifle and escape. We chased him all the way down the mountain. I was the one who released the gunshot earlier. It hit his leg, and his speed slowed down. Fortunately, he was caught by one of Swainâs men who came to besiege the mountain.â
Nico had always been great at work, so Cedrick was not surprised at what he had achieved. âOkay.
Take him to the helicopter and send him back to the bureau for an interrogation. Do this as soon as possible to avoid any unexpected turn of events,â he said indifferently.
âUnderstood.â
After hanging up, Cedrick called Swain to get updates about the process of besieging the mountain for a thorough search.
âBoss, we took the helicopter early this morning and landed on a nearby mountain range. After the closure, no one went up the mountain. That person must have hidden there way before our arrival. Iâm afraid we can only find out how long heâs been hiding there after the interrogation.â
âKeep searching the mountain. Donât miss a single thing, even if itâs a rodent.â
âNoted, Boss.â
âTell me the location of the helicopter. I want to get Gwenny out of here.â
After getting a detailed report from Swain, Cedrick ended the call.
Creak! As the old door was slowly opened from the outside, its metal latch made a piercing sound.
Megan darted to the door almost instantly and asked, âHow is it, Mr. Jenson? Is the person caught?â
Cedrick nodded in response.
That means yes.
Megan lowered her head and let out a long sigh. âThatâs good, thatâs good. In that case, thereâs no need for us to live in fear, and we can continue with our daily routines, right? Letâs have lunch since itâs almost noon.â
Cedrick stared at her calmly. âMegan, donât you want to know what confession the man who hid in the dark and fired his rifle made?â
Startled, Megan clenched her fists under her linen garment and then let go the next second. âWhat did he confess to?â
Cedrickâs lips curved slightly at her response. âWe donât know yet. However, it will soon be revealed once he undergoes further interrogation at Federal Bureau of Investigation.â
âOh, I see.â Megan lowered her head once more, seemingly lost in thought.
A few seconds later, she lifted her head and smiled. âAre you guys hungry? Let me prepare something.
Once Mr. Newton and the other Mr. Jenson are back, we can have lunch together.â
âDonât worry about it,â rejected Cedric. âWe wonât be having lunch here.â
Megan appeared to have read between the lines. âAre you planning to leave?â
Cedrick nodded and replied, âYes, I feel bad to keep troubling you, Megan. Thus, Iâd like to invite you to the city and treat you to a good meal.â
âWhat?â Megan was shocked. Why does it sound like heâs treating me like a prime suspect?
Before she could react, Cedrick swiftly struck her neck with a knife hand.
Megan let out a soft grunt, fell backward, and dropped limply into Gwendolynâs arms.
When Gwendolynâs gaze met Cedrickâs, she asked, âWhat are you doing?â
âYou said so in the field just now that you wanted to take Megan along if you had to leave. Hence, letâs all go back to Salinsburgh together.â
Arching a brow, Gwendolyn questioned, âWhat if I refuse to follow you?â
âThen I shall knock your lights out too,â Cedrick answered without thinking twice.
Hmph, what an attitude!
âWe just fought a couple of hours ago. Do you dare to do it again?â
Cedrick flashed a faint smile at her. âI didnât really show you my full capabilities this morning, but it wonât be the case now. Do you want to see what Iâve got, Gwenny?â
Gwendolyn was quite interested in fighting him as they had battled several times during the divorce.
She then lay Megan on the wooden couch and rolled up her sleeves, assuming an intimidating stance.
âCome on, letâs have a go at it. Itâs either Iâll beat you to a pulp or you will knock me out.â
Cedrick felt his throat tightened as his face turned pale. I donât dare to hit my wife. What if she leaves me? It wasnât easy to get her back, and I canât afford to lose her again. My punches are harsh. If I accidentally hurt her, Iâll be the one who loses out in the end.
He heaved a long sigh at that thought. Subsequently, he approached her, gently grabbed her wrist, bent down, and patted his face with her hand.
Gwendolyn tried very hard to hold back a laugh when she saw how the man compromised. âWhat are you doing?â
âI was just joking. If you insist on staying here, I wonât force you to do otherwise. If youâre upset with me, you can hit me, and I wonât retaliate at all. However, once youâre done releasing your anger, please leave this place with me. Itâs very dangerous here because we donât know how many more people are hiding in concealed positions.â
Gwendolyn kept a straight face and pinched him on the cheek without saying a word.
Cedrick continued to persuade her, âI hurt my arm. Can you accompany me to the hospital? Iâll send Megan to a safe place and protect her. Iâll also show you our marriage certificate. If I ever lie to you, Iâll rot in hell.â
âYouââ Before she could stop him from saying any further, he had finished swearing. Gwendolyn nodded and said, âOkay, I believe you.â
Yeah, my darling is finally willing to come with me! Delighted, Cedrick grinned from ear to ear. âThank you, Gwenny, for your trust.â
Gwendolyn kept quiet. She turned around to hold the unconscious Megan.
Soon, the duo along with Megan took the helicopter.
Cedrick had his eyes glued to Gwendolyn the entire time.
Feeling rather uneasy, Gwendolyn changed the topic. âMr. Jenson, why are you so sure that Iâm your wife? What happens if Iâm a fake or youâve got the wrong person?â
Cedrick brushed her slightly messy hair and tucked them behind her ear. His gaze was gentle. âThatâs impossible, for Iâll never mistake someone else for you.â
