Chapter 655
Wooing My Ex-Wife
âDonât worry. Iâll only take your suspicions as a reference.â Cedrickâs gaze was dark and cold as he played with the exquisite coffee cup.
With that promise from Cedrick, Charles organized his thoughts and said gently, âAll the old baby formula were found to be problematic. After ruling out a few possibilities, I was left with a few possible situations. For one, the baby formula was produced at PureVitaâs factory. Perhaps the batch that was meant to be delivered to your house was given special attention during production. That means the higher-ups in the company had a grudge against your family, which led them to add foreign substances into the baby formula during production.â
The calm look in Cedrickâs eyes did not waver. He simply continued listening to Charles in silence.
When Charles finished explaining the first possibility, Cedrick said flatly, âIâm PureVita Groupâs biggest shareholder, and their executive officer was once my subordinate, who decided to inherit the family business after leaving the military. Heâs a meticulous person. Since their baby formula is consumed by babies, he manages the factory strictly. Their products are the safest, which is why I chose their companyâs baby formula. Youâre right about Benny and Zendyâs baby formulas being given special care, but itâs personally supervised by their executive officer. Thereâs a very minimal possibility of the problem coming from the company. I know him well enough. He wouldnât dare to do such a thing.â
Charles nodded thoughtfully. âIf youâre confident in the company, then letâs move on to the next possibility. Someone from the Jenson family is trying to hurt Benny. Both you and Gwen have jobs and often work long hours. The Jenson residence is the best place for them to make their move.â
Cedrick said nothing. He wrapped his fingers around the coffee cup, tapping it gently as he mulled things over.
Charles lifted his gaze occasionally to observe Cedrickâs expression. He continued, âI remember you sent Benny and Zendy to Old Mr. Jensonâs not long ago, and he took care of the kids for some time.
Mdm. Yarde and the baby products were brought to Old Mr. Jensonâs villa, right?â
Cedrick frowned, looking more serious as his fingers tightened around the coffee cup. âYou suspect my grandpa?â
âI wouldnât dare. Although Old Mr. Jenson is retired, he has built a good reputation over the years.
Thereâs no way heâd do such a thing to harm his own great-grandson.â After bringing up a good point, Charles continued, âHowever, that doesnât mean we can rule out the possibility of the other family members doing such a thing. They could use visiting Old Mr. Jenson as an excuse to secretly switch out the baby formula.â
Once again, Cedrick fell into a long silence.
The children had been sent to Valentinoâs for a period of time because the adults feared Gwendolynâs manic episodes could harm the children.
Back then, Cedrick had been focused on providing care for Gwendolyn, so he handed the children to Valentino without any worry.
It was possible if that was how the opportunity was created.
Cedrick uttered calmly, âThatâs possible. Iâll look into this, but Iâm afraid I canât tell you more about our familyâs matters.â
âI understand,â was all Charles said.
During the few minutes of silence, Charles sipped on his coffee while Cedrick pulled out his phone and tapped on it rapidly, sending an order to the prison.
It read: Wake Yael up and bring him to the secret visiting room. Iâll be there in a while.
In less than a minute, Cedrick received a reply that read: Understood.
When Cedrick was looking into his parentâs death, he swore he would no longer care about Xanderâs wellbeing. Now, he had no idea if the latter had fled to another country or hidden himself in a corner.
He decided to test the waters with Yael before sending someone to look for Xander.
The office was incredibly quiet. Neither of them spoke as they were deep in their thoughts.
In fact, they were thinking about the same thing.
After some time, Cedrick slowly parted his lips and asked, âDo you have other suspicions?â
âOf course.â Charles instantly snapped back to his senses. âIf the two suspicions were to be ruled out, then the next one would be highly possible. Something mightâve happened while the cans of baby formula were being delivered from the factory to the Jenson residence. Thereâs no telling what mightâve happened that led to the cans of baby formula getting switched out during the delivery stage. However, I know youâve already thought of that. If not, you wouldnât have told Nico to go looking for the person in charge and the shipping information.â
Cedrickâs dark gaze was as calm as ever. âAs expected from the best of the best of the Central Intelligence Agency. Itâs been eighteen months since you were dismissed as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. During that period, you were beaten, ran for your life, and even became a teacher in the countryside. Yet, you never forget what you learned, and your mind still works rather quickly.â
Charles stared at Cedrick with a smirk. âItâs rare to hear a compliment from you. Is there a vacancy in the Federal Bureau of Investigation? Are you trying to recruit me?â
There was an unfathomable look in Cedrickâs eyes. âIf you can beat Nico in the fight, I might consider writing a letter of referral if you want to get a job in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.â
The smile on Charlesâ face broadened. âWhy, thank you in advance, Mr. Jenson. Iâll do my best in the fight.â
Cedrick did not reply, the expression in his eyes slowly becoming harder to read.
As the ex-leader of the Central Intelligence Agency and the current patriarch of the Newton family, Charles had his ambitions.
Cedrick knew Charles was as ruthless as his half-brother, Craig.
The more power they had, the more likely they were to become a variable.
They could easily become a friend or an enemy.
If Charles really beat Nico, Cedrick might have to limit the formerâs visits to Harrick Villa as a precaution.
While he was thinking deeply, his phone rang with a notification.
Putting down the coffee cup, Cedrick got up and straightened his clothes in an elegant manner.
âNico might take some time to gather all the information. Iâm making a trip to the prison. Dare you follow me?â
Charlesâ expression changed.
The prisonâ¦
It was the place he hated the most.
When he was locked up in a high-security prison for six months, he felt like a walking corpse. Every day was like a living hell. He would avoid getting close to it unless it was under special circumstances.
Noticing the change in Charlesâ countenance, Cedrick raised his brow mischievously. âLooks like you dare not go there. Well, you can hang out at the pantry here and wait for me to come back to continue with the discussion. If youâre tired, you can always go back to the Newton residence too.â
Charles quickly rose to his feet. âThatâs all in the past. Everyone has a dark history, anyway. Thereâs nothing Iâm afraid of. Lead the way, Mr. Jenson.â
Cedrick cast the man an intrigued look before stepping out of the office.
Meanwhile, Yael, who was sound asleep in Salinsburgh prison, was awakened by a powerful torchlight.
The prison guard shouted, âWake up, Prisoner 5803. Get dressed and follow me.â
Yael was exhausted after a long day of labor during the day. He was awakened when he was deep in his sleep.
Even so, he dared not object. He quickly did as told and followed after the prison guard.
The entire prison dorm was eerily quiet since it was late at night. A sense of uneasiness crept into Yaelâs heart as he followed the guard in a daze.
âWhere are you taking me? Whatâs so urgent that needs to be done in the middle of the night?â
Are they trying to kill me?
