Chapter 617
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Chapter 617 This Cannot Be A Coincidence The dim lighting inside the prison cell made the bladeâs gleam more piercing.
With an insidious look in his eyes, Yael gripped the dagger and swung it directly at Cedrickâs waist.
The dagger was just about to penetrate Cedrickâs camouflage military uniform, and Yael began to visualize what a bloody mess his victim would soon become.
Yet, the dagger suddenly stopped in its trajectory, just a few centimeters away from its target.
Cedrick had grabbed Yaelâs wrist so tightly that the latter couldnât budge.
âTo think that you even tried to murder me on my own turf,â Cedrick scoffed. âAre you that tired of living.
Uncle Yael?â
Yael froze briefly before roaring with laughter. âIâm well aware that the Federal Bureau of Investigation wonât let me go even if I kill you.â
With a frown, Cedrick tightened his grip on Yaelâs hand. The intense pain forced the latter to let go of his dagger so his opponent could take it.
Do âYou know you canât kill me. Even if you could, thereâs no way youâd be able to get away. But you still tried. you intend to go down together?â With the dagger now in his hands, Cedrick placed it over Yaelâs neck. âHow do you expect me to believe your confession if you act like this, Uncle Yael?â
âEvery word I told you was the truth, Cedrick. You can look into what I said if you donât believe me. My words are at least far more believable than those so-called truths your grandfather told you.â Yael spoke boldly and earnestly, still sounding like an elder advising someone younger despite being held at knifepoint. âXanderâs too naive, Cedrick. He gets used by others easily. Why donât you let him go now that heâs secretly left the Federal Bureau of Investigation? Heâll never return to the Jenson residence or get in your way anymore.â
Cedrick pursed his lips, remaining frigid in spite of his uncle giving in and not giving a firm answer with regard to Xander.
âYou should worry about yourself, Uncle Yael. Attempting to murder me with a dagger is no small matter.â You wouldâve been released after getting detained for just a few days, but now, we might have to involve the Department of Justice. You could even go to jail.â
He sounded as cold as ice.
The atmosphere of the prison cell turned suffocating.
âAs for Xander, weâll deal with him depending on how legitimate your confession is.â
As those last words fell, Cedrick got up and walked out of the cell with the dagger, not looking back.
âIâm old now, Cedrick. Do what you want with me, but donât go after Xander. Let me take his place,â
Yael called out with a hint of hopelessness and a fatherâs despair in his voice the moment Cedrick arrived at the door.
Cedrick stopped in his tracks as though contemplating his uncleâs words.
Ultimately, he responded with nothing and left, the dagger still in his hand as he walked along the hallway.
All his life, he had never felt any love from his parents. The only memories he had growing up were of the ever-forbidding Valentino.
Would a father really resort to such a foolish decision for his son?
Is he that willing to sacrifice his own life for his sonâs safety? And this dagger⦠They searched him before detaining him, so there was no way he couldâve brought it into his cell. Whoever snuck Xander away mustâve secretly given it to him.
There was only one person in the Federal Bureau of Investigation who had the power to disable all the surveillance cameras and take Xander away-Valentino.
Cedrickâs brows furrowed deeply. He tightened his grip on the dagger, a complex feeling swirling in his head.
It was only after Neville showed up that he brushed aside all those heavy thoughts.
âYou donât look too good. Are you okay? Do you want to head back earlier and rest?â Neville asked softly.
Remaining expressionless, Cedrick handed the dagger to Neville. âYael tried to kill me with a dagger when I visited him. This is what he used. Record this case, and Iâll take care of it when Iâm free in a few days.â
Neville took the weapon with both hands. âVery well.â
Clad in military boots, Cedrick left and returned to his office.
Gwendolyn was sitting on the couch drinking her coffee, awaiting his arrival.
She rushed toward him as soon as he walked in. âWell? What did Yael say?â.
Cedrick removed his thick military jacket, looking especially grim.
âHe said my parentsâ car crash was no accident. It was a homicide, and Uncle David was behind it.â
Gwendolyn was taken aback. âUncle David? How could that be?â
David was Trissâ father, and although Gwendolyn didnât know him well, he had once spoken up for Cedrick when the latter was being interrogated in the ancestral hall.
He seems like such a kind and honest man! He didnât even involve himself when Cedrick and Yael were fighting for power. How could a leisurely old man like him who always minded his own business be behind the death of Cedrickâs parents?
Cedrick reached out for his wifeâs face to ease her tension. âI know you donât believe that. I donât, either.â
âWeâve heard two very different sides of the story tonight. Who do you think is lying, Hubby?â
Gwendolyn asked solemnly. âOr, could it be that both Uncle Yael and Grandpa are lying?â
Cedrick pondered for a moment. âWeâll have to look into this. There are a lot of contradictions in both their statements, but we canât rely on our judgment alone. We need solid evidence.ââ
Gwendolyn nodded in agreement. âSo, how do you plan on looking into it?â
âSince Uncle Yael claims that Uncle David was responsible for the car accident and that Grandpa had lied to protect Uncle David, that means weâll have to talk to Uncle David and see what he has to say about this.â
Gwendolynâs face stiffened as she recalled something.
The man immediately noticed something off about her. âWhatâs wrong. Darling?â
âI thought of that too while I was helping you with investigations yesterday, but according to Triss, Uncle David isnât in Salinsburgh right now,â Gwendolyn answered truthfully. âIt seems that heâs gone on a work trip, but no one knows when heâll be back.â
âWhen did he leave?â
âI think it was⦠a few days ago, the day Uncle Yael confronted you and you went rushing over to see Grandpa at night.â
Cedrickâs expression turried grave. âDid he leave at night?â
Gwendolyn nodded.
Leaving Salinsburgh just as things are beginning to unfold, and his own daughter doesnât know when heâll be back? This canât be a coincidence.
âI have a feeling Uncle David probably knows something, but he left Salinsburgh the moment he caught wind. Itâs as if he doesnât want to be involved,â Gwendolyn said.
Cedrick didnât respond.
In this situation, even Valentino was brushing him aside and lying to him. He couldnât trust anyone now.
Moreover, the fact that David had disappeared at such a crucial moment now made Yaelâs confession a little more believable.
While deep in thought, Cedrick glanced at his watch. It was past ten at night.
âItâs late, Darling. Letâs go home. Iâll get someone to look into Grandpaâs and Uncle Yaelâs statements, so letâs continue this tomorrow.â
Indeed, Gwendolyn was beginning to feel sleepy.
All these Jenson family affairs sure are complicated. You could get a headache thinking about all this.
Itâs best to get some rest and clear our heads before we carry on with investigations.
âLetâs go.â
Cedrick took off his jacket and draped it over the womanâs shoulders. Then, they left the Federal Bureau of Investigation together with his hand around her slender waist.
As Cedrick drove home, the built-in Bluetooth speaker played some relaxing music.
Neither Cedrick nor Gwendolyn uttered a word, both seemingly mulling over something.
After a long while, Gwendolyn turned her head and glanced at the man next to her.
With his pitch-black eyes on the road ahead, he looked as though he was concentrating on driving while spacing out at the same time.
Gwendolyn sighed internally. She knew he couldnât get his mind off Yaelâs and Valentinoâs words.
âDid you know, Hubby?â she asked, leaning closer and attempting to bring him back to reality. âKieran and Inez came looking for me at Harris Group earlier today.â
Cedrick snapped out of his thoughts. âFor what?â
âTheyâre planning to travel now that theyâve taken a break from managing the group.â
Cedrick nodded absentmindedly.
Noticing Gwendolynâs gaze remained on him, he quickly added, âItâs a good idea to travel before getting married. Itâs not like they have much else to do, and traveling can bring them closer. Kieranâs not that young anymore, so itâd be perfect for him to spend time with Inez before coming back to get married.â
Gwendolyn couldnât help but chuckle after seeing the man try his best not to make her upset.
âDid I say something wrong?â Cedrick asked, bewildered.
âNot at all!â
The man drove with one hand, so Gwendolyn reached for his other hand and interlocked their fingers.
âKieran and Inez are hoping we could join them for a few days. What do you think?â
